Edge Of Sanity - "Nothing But Death Remains" (1991)

Spośród wszystkich płyt Edge Of Sanity debiutancki "Nothing But Death Remains" cieszy się chyba najmniejszym zainteresowaniem. W następnych latach muzyka Dana Swanö i spółki poszybowała jakościowo bowiem na tyle w górę, że pomimo wówczas nie najgorszych kompozycji i ogólnie fajnych pomysłów, debiut Szwedów szybko odszedł do lamusa. Słysząc zawartość tego krążka trudno się jednak specjalnie temu dziwić. 

Na tym etapie, muzyka tego szwedzkiego zespołu niestety mocno odstawała poziomem na tle późniejszych płyt. Brakowało oryginalności (choć to można jeszcze przeboleć) i - przede wszystkim - porządnego miksu (o czym w dalszej części recenzji). Tym bardziej szkoda, bo był potencjał na solidny krążek.

Stylistycznie, Edge Of Sanity było wówczas bliżej takich kapel jak Gorefest czy Sinister aniżeli typowo szwedzkich brzmień. Na "Nothing But Death Remains" znalazło się zaskakująco sporo pocinania w średnio-szybkich tempach (póki co bez blastów), dosyć dużo ciężaru (ale nie szwedzkiego) i w podobnych ilościach dusznego klimatu. Póki co, nie było też mowy o jakichkolwiek wycieczkach w progresje (mały wyjątek "Tales..."). Najważniejszy miał być ciężar, surowizna i mocarny death metal. Szkoda tylko, że do produkcji należycie się nie przyłożono. 

Tak jak wspominałem wyżej, najbardziej pogrąża "Nothing..." kiepski miks (a właściwie jego brak), przy którym niczym nieuzasadnione ściszenia lub podgłośnienia to niemal nieodłączny element muzyki. W ciemno można sprawdzić wprawdzie takie strzały jak "Impulsive Necroplasma", "The Dead", "Human Aberration", "Decepted By The Cross" oraz przywołany wyżej "Tales...", tyle, że co po nich, kiedy doskwiera im brak przyzwoitej realizacji. 

Trochę szkoda, bo słychać, że w każdym z kawałków grupa chciała zaprezentować się jak najlepiej. Można w nich znaleźć dużo fajnych, klasycznie death metalowych riffów, licznych zmian temp i rzecz jasna charakterystycznych, niskich growli Dana Swanö. Pomijam, że na tle następnych płyt EoS to raptem namiastka ich możliwości. Na tym etapie, muzyka chłopaków z Edge Of Sanity wypadała jakby była jeszcze mocno niedopracowaną i dopiero kształtującą się na coś większego.

Among all Edge Of Sanity albums, the debut album "Nothing But Death Remains" is probably the least popular. In the following years, the music of Dan Swanö and the rest band soared qualitatively so much that, despite the then not bad compositions and generally cool ideas, the debut of the Swedes quickly fell into the past. Hearing the contents of this disc, however, it is hardly surprising. 

At this stage, the music of this Swedish band, unfortunately, was far from the quality of the later albums. It lacked originality (although you can still get over it) and - most of all - a decent mix (more on this later in the review). It's a pity all the more, because there was a potential for a solid disc. 

Stylistically, Edge Of Sanity was closer to bands such as Gorefest or Sinister than to typically Swedish sounds. On "Nothing But Death Remains" there was surprisingly a lot of death metal in medium-fast paces (no blasts so far), quite a lot of dingy (but not Swedish) and in similar amounts of stuffy atmosphere. So far, there was no question of any excursions into progression (a small exception "Tales..."). The most important thing was to be heavy, raw and powerful. It's a pity that the production was not properly applied. 

As I mentioned above, "Nothing..." plunges the most by a poor mix (or rather the lack of it), where unjustified volume down or volume up is almost an integral part of the music. You can check songs such as "Impulsive Necroplasma", "The Dead", "Human Aberration", "Decepted By The Cross" and the above-mentioned "Tales...", but what about them, when they lack decent implementation. 

It's a pity, because you can hear that in each of the tracks the group wanted to present their best. You can find a lot of cool, classic death metal riffs, numerous temp changes and of course Dan Swanö's characteristic low growls. I omit that compared to the next albums, EoS is only a substitute for their capabilities. At this stage, the music of the guys from Edge Of Sanity fell out as if it was still underdeveloped.
