At The Gates - "With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness" (1993)

Na swoim drugim "dużym" wydawnictwie, Szwedzi z At The Gates skurwili się, zatracili oryginalność i poszli już po całości w melodyjne pitolonko...z taką też opinią kiedyś się spotkałem. Nic z tych rzeczy, bo choć kapela faktycznie się pozmieniała i zdecydowała pójść w czysty melodic death metal, bynajmniej nie nagrała na "With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness" kiepawej muzy - a mówi to osoba, która również najbardziej ceni sobie debiut. Poza tym, At The Gates to jeden z pionierów takiego stylu.

Rok po wydaniu "The Red In The Sky Is Ours", kwintet z At The Gates zdecydował się bowiem nagrać materiał znacznie prostszy, przejrzystszy i bez jakichś większych dodatków (zniknęły np. skrzypce). W związku z tym, zawitało do muzyki dużo więcej melodii, ale i fragmentów niezbyt skomplikowanych/łatwiej przyswajalnych. I pomimo, że poprzednia stylistyka oferowała więcej i była bardziej unikalna, w nowej odsłonie At The Gates też wybroniło się podobnie nieźle. Muza ma tu inny feeling w porównaniu do "jedynki"; jest bardziej chwytliwie i bez jakichś wyraźnych kombinacji. Nawet tam gdzie zespół rozpędza się ponad 4 minuty ("Primal Breath", "The Break Of Autumn", "Ever-Opening Flower", "Blood Of The Sunsets", "Non-Divine" - ogólnie dosyć często), Tomas Lindberg z resztą kolegów serwują dużo melodii, i to bez słodzenia a la jakiś In Flames. Samo to ostatnie już powinno być wystarczającą gwarancją znakomitości tego materiału.

Z najbardziej konkretnych utworów wpisujących się w nowy styl At The Gates warto tu nadmienić o otwierającym longplay "Beyond Good And Evil", zaraz po nim "Raped By The Light Of Christ" oraz zamykającym "Through The Red", zaskakująco bezpośrednich i bez melo-deathowej sztampy. Ciekawie prezentuje się też "Stardrowned", mocno "poszatkowany" i w stylu pierwszej płyty, fajnie urozmaicający prostszą młóckę. Z dłuższych kawałków należałoby wymienić m.in. "Primal Breath" oraz "Non-Divine", tak samo dobre i całkiem konkretne mimo swojej długości, a przy tym bardziej rozbudowane. Nie do końca przekonuje mnie za to w tym zestawieniu ukryty cover Discharge ("The Nightmare Continues"), który - poza instrumentarium - nie oferuje niczego ciekawego (chyba, że ktoś lubi noisowe wokale). Istnieje sobie jakby w oderwaniu od reszty utworów. 

No i dobra, jak widać jest lepiej niż dobrze, płyty słucha się z zaciekawieniem i nie odrzuca ona natłokiem melo-deathowych patentów, które wyparły te bardziej ekstremalne. Wprawdzie starszy o rok "The Red..." jak dla mnie wypada trochę ciekawiej niż omawiany "With Fear...", to jednak drugi z wymienionych także potrafi zatrzymać na dłuższą chwilę, i to pomimo pewnych uproszczeń.

On their second release, the Swedes from At The Gates fucked up, lost their originality and went into a melodic shit...with this opinion I have heard once. None of these things, because although the band actually changed and decided to go into pure melodic death metal, they did not record a bad music on "With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness" - and this is said by a person who also appreciates their debut the most. Besides, At The Gates is one of the pioneers of this style. 

A year after the release of "The Red In The Sky Is Ours", the quintet from At The Gates decided to record much simpler, more transparent material without any major additions (eg. the violin disappeared). Therefore, many more melodies appeared in the music, but also fragments that were not too complicated/easier to digest. And despite the fact that the previous styling offered more and was more unique, the new version of At The Gates also fared similarly well. The music has a different feeling here compared to "The Red..."; it's more catchy and without any clear combinations. Even where the band speeds up over 4 minutes ("Primal Breath", "The Break Of Autumn", "Ever-Opening Flower", "Blood Of The Sunsets", "Non-Divine" - generally quite often), the band serve a lot of melodies, without any sweetening, a la In Flames. The latter alone should be a sufficient guarantee of the excellence of this material. 

Of the most specific songs that fit into the new At The Gates style, it's worth mentioning the opening longplay "Beyond Good And Evil", followed by "Raped By The Light Of Christ" and the closing song "Through The Red", surprisingly direct and without melody death cliché. "Stardrowned" also looks interesting, strongly "chopped" and in the style of the first album, nicely diversifying the simpler playing. The longer songs should also be mentioned, among others "Primal Breath" and "Non-Divine", just as good and quite concrete despite their length, and at the same more extensive. However, I am not entirely convinced in this set by the hidden cover of Discharge ("The Nightmare Continues"), which - apart from the instruments - does not offer anything interesting (unless someone likes noise vocals). It exists as if in isolation from the rest of the songs. 

Well, as you can see, it is better than good, the album is listened to with interest and it does not reject the flood of melo-death patents that have replaced the more extreme ones. Although "The Red..." is a year older than the discussed "With Fear...", the latter can also be kept for a long time, despite some simplifications.
