Marduk - "Those Of The Unlight" (1993)

Mroczna okładka ze słitaśnym różowym logo Marduk (i tytułem płyty) to akurat jedno z (naj)lepszych dzieł w ich dosyć bogatej dyskografii. Tuż po wydaniu "Dark Endless", 3/5 poprzedniego składu z nowym basistą wypuściło krążek jeszcze konkretniejszy i - mimo wyraźnych uproszczeń - znacznie ciekawiej zaaranżowany i bez deathowych naleciałości. Kierunek zmian był u Marduk dosyć klasyczny, kapela dodała na "Those Of The Unlight" duuużo więcej black metalu, zadbała o odpowiednią chwytliwość (na tyle, że każdy numer jest jakiś), zmieniła produkcję na surowszą (jak to bleczury), rozwinęła klimatyczne wstawki (np. o czyste gitary w "On Darkened Wings" i "Darkness Breeds Immortality" czy spokojniejsze granie w środkowej części "Wolves") oraz zaproponowała jeszcze bardziej maniakalne wokale (za które tym razem odpowiada perkman Joakim Af Gravf). 

Na szczęście, w tym wypadku "klasyczny" nie oznaczało "jak u innych". Od początku albumu da się bowiem dostrzec (czy raczej usłyszeć) własny styl kapeli i dużą dawkę świeżości. Tam gdzie trzeba, kwartet przyłożył jeszcze mocniej niż na "jedynce", w innych fragmentach albumu z kolei świetnie zrównoważył to wolniejszym, klimatycznym graniem (m.in. w "Wolves", "Echoes From The Past", "Stone Stands Its Silent Vigil"), a w większości pokazał, że ich muzyka potrafi utrzymać uwagę przez cały czas trwania krążka. Zresztą, same te utwory gdzie przeważa nakurw to też konkretny pokaz możliwości kapeli. Takie kawałki jak "Burn My Coffin" czy tytułowy oczywiście porażają pierwotnością i naprawdę fajnymi pomysłami, ale są też na tyle dobrze skomponowane, że szybko zapadają w pamięć i nie sprawiają wrażenia zbyt prostawych (w końcu przeważa w nich klasyczne black metalowe tremolo). 

Jeśli doszukiwałbym się tutaj jakichś zgrzytów to małe zastrzeżenia może miałbym tu wobec solówek, które jak na moje ucho nijak pasują do całości muzy (brzmią jakoś tu tak zbyt ładnie), choć i to jest trochę minusem na siłę. Wiadomo, sam też wolałbym, gdyby Marduk pozostał przy death metalowych brzmieniach, ale zdążyłem już nadmienić, że "Those Of The Unlight" wypada znacznie lepiej niż "Dark Endless" - a tyle powinno większości wystarczyć za rekomendację. Reszta bardziej dociekliwych również powinna zainteresować się tym wydawnictwem, ponieważ muzyka zaliczyła tu dość wyraźny progres (mimo paradoksalnych uproszczeń), jest brutalniejsza, ciekawiej zróżnicowana, lepiej przemyślana i jeszcze szybciej wpada w ucho. Nic tylko słuchać.

The dark cover with the brilliant pink Marduk logo (and the title of the album) is one of the (best) cds in their quite rich discography. Shortly after the release of "Dark Endless", 3/5 of the previous line-up with a new bassist released an even more concrete and - despite clear simplifications - much more interestingly arranged and without death accretions. The direction of changes was quite classic with Marduk, the band added a lot more black metal to "Those Of The Unlight", took care of the appropriate catchiness (so much that each song has character ), changed the production to a more raw (standard for black metal bands), developed atmospheric inserts (eg. clean guitars in "On Darkened Wings" and "Darkness Breeds Immortality" or calmer playing in the middle part of "Wolves") and offered even more maniacal vocals (for which this time the drummer Joakim Af Gravf is responsible). 

Fortunately, in this case "classic" did not mean "like the others". From the beginning of the album you can see (or rather hear) the band's own style and a large dose of freshness. Where necessary, the quartet applied even more than on the "Dark...", in other parts of the album they perfectly balanced it with slower, atmospheric playing (including in "Wolves", "Echoes From The Past", "Stone Stands Its Silent Vigil") and mostly showed that their music can hold your attention throughout the duration of the album. Anyway, the same songs where the blasting is predominant is also a concrete show of the band's skills. Songs such as "Burn My Coffin" or the title track, of course, strike with their originality and really cool ideas, but they are also well composed so that they are quickly remembered and do not seem too simple (after all, classic black metal tremolo prevails in them). 

If I was looking for any glitches here, I would have small reservations about the solos, which, for my ear, do not match the whole music (they sound too pretty here), although this is also a bit of a downside. Obviously, I would also prefer if Marduk stayed with death metal sounds, but I have already mentioned that "Those Of The Unlight" fares much better than "Dark Endless" - and that should be enough for most of the recommendation. The rest of the more inquisitive should also be interested in this release, because the music has made quite a clear progress here (despite paradoxical simplifications), it's more brutal, more interestingly differentiated, better thought out and catchy even faster. Just listen.
