At The Gates - "Gardens Of Grief" (1991)

Rzadko zajmuję się tutaj na "Trochę Subiektywizmu..." epkami a co dopiero demówkami - toż to prawdziwe święto! W przypadku jednak At The Gates sporym błędem byłoby pominięcie ich "Gardens Of Grief" (z którym o dziwo sam trochę też zwlekałem), tym bardziej, że - podobnie jak później na "The Red In The Sky Is Ours" - Szwedzi zaskoczyli czymś mniej pospolitym na ówczesnej, gothenburgskiej scenie. Demo At The Gates to również coś trochę innego nawet w kontekście "wyjątkowego" debiutu. 

Kwintet w tamtym czasie jeszcze mocno dawkował sobie na melodiach, technicznych łamańcach (choć pewna zapowiedź pojawiła się w "All Life Ends") oraz graniu w towarzystwie skrzypiec (zamiast tego, okazjonalnie z klawiszami); największy nacisk zespół położył na prostsze, bardziej pierwotne i mroczniejsze death metalowe łojenie. Nie znaczy to jednak, że "Gardens..." nie tryska oryginalnością. Poleciałbym z tym nawet dalej, demo At The Gates to - niemal tak samo jak "jedynka" - rzecz absolutnie unikatowa. Traci jedynie na tym, że nie sięga aż tak mocno w progresywne granie jak "The Red..." oraz...że ilościowo nie jest tych kawałków zbyt dużo (trzy-cztery więcej i już byłby longplay!). 

Poza tymi drobnostkami, "Gardens..." to kawał dosyć ambitnego, death metalowego grania, z którego błyskawicznie idzie wyłapać dość specyficzny i niepodobny do innych kapel feeling. Słychać to po otwierającym "Souls Of The Evil Departed", ale tak naprawdę...po każdym z czterech zawartych tu utworów. Pierwszy z nich wyróżnia się szybkością, następne "At The Gates" oraz "All Life Ends" przytłaczającym klimacikiem i sporym zróżnicowaniem w obrębie temp, a "City Of Screaming Statues" największą melodyjnością (nie bez powodu zresztą jako jedyny zawitał później na debiucie). Dobre wrażenia pogłębia także produkcja, więc generalnie całości słucha się stosunkowo łatwo i z przyjemnością. Noo a skoro późniejszy, właściwy debiut At The Gates potrafi pozostawić za sobą pewien niedosyt (że tak szybko zmienili styl oczywiście! - o jakościowym nie ma mowy), "Gardens Of Grief" całkiem nieźle sprawdza się jako uzupełnienie tejże płyty. Może i trochę przykrótkie i delikatnie inne stylistycznie, ale jednak.

I rarely check EPs, let alone demos on "Trochę Subiektywizmu..." page - it's a very special moment! However, in the case of At The Gates it would be a big mistake to omit their "Gardens Of Grief" (which, surprisingly, I also dealyed a bit), especially since - like later on "The Red In The Sky Is Ours" - the Swedes surprised here with something less common on the Gothenburg scene. The At The Gates demo is also something a little different even in the context of an "exceptional" debut. 

The quintet at that time was still dosing on the melodies, technical twists (although something like this appeared in "All Life Ends") and playing with the violin (instead, occasionally with keyboards); the band put the emphasis on simpler, more primitive and darker death metal. However, this doesen't mean that "Gardens..." is not original. On the contrary, the At The Gates demo is - almost the same as "The Red..." - something absolutely unique. The only two things that are losing out on this record is that it doesen't reach that much into progressive stuff like "The Red..." and...there are not too many of these songs (three or four more and there would be an LP!). 

Apart from these trifles, "Gardens..." is a piece of quite ambitious, death metal music, which quickly catches quite specific and unlike other bands feeling. This can be heard after the opening "Souls Of The Evil Departed", but in fact...after each of the four tracks contained here. The first one is distinguished by its fast pace, the next "At The Gates" and "All Life Ends" by overwhelming climate and considerable diversity, and "City Of Screaming Statues" by the greatest melody (not without reason, it was the only one that appeared later on the debut). The production also deepens the good impression, so in general the whole is relatively easy and pleasant to listen to. Well, since the subsequent, proper debut of At The Gates can unsatisified you (that they changed their style so quickly, of course! - there is no question of quality), "Gardens Of Grief" works quite well as a foretaste to this album. Maybe a bit short and slighty different stylistically, but still.
