Hate Eternal - "Conquering The Throne" (1999)

Domniemywam, że głównym założeniem jakie miał Erik Rutan przy tworzeniu Hate Eternal było granie szybsze, brutalniejsze i jeszcze bardziej intensywne niż u Morbid Angel. Cóż, w tzw. międzyczasie druga z wymienionych kapel - jak spekuluję - wpadła na podobny pomysł...i wydała konkretnie zbrutalizowany "Formulas Fatal To The Flesh"! Pytanie zatem, czy "Conquering The Throne" Hate Eternal ma z tej perspektywy w ogóle jakiś sens? Odpowiedź jest banalnie prosta: jeszcze jak! 

Hate Eternal to nic co można by uznać za bezczelną zrzynkę z Morbid Angel - właściwie, bardzo sensowna odpowiedź na patenty Treya Azagthotha i własne spojrzenie na tego typu death metal. Tyczy się to np. wspomnianej brutalności, nieco innego feelingu (niektórych) riffów, podziału na dwa wokale (z trochę słabszym tym wrzaskliwym) czy ogólna zwięzłość poszczególnych utworów (większość trzyma się podziału na 2-3 minuty). W praktyce daje to takie znakomite utwory jak "By His Own Decree", "Darkness By Oath", "Nailed To Obscurity" czy "Dethroned", świetnie wpisujące się w death metalowe standardy z Florydy.

Teraz trochę o samych muzykach udzielających się na "Conquering...", ponieważ myślę, że warto o tym wspomnieć, a nasuwają oni więcej wniosków niż niektórzy kolejni towarzysze Rutana. Fajnie sprawdza się na albumie Tim Yeung, który osiąga tutaj obłędne tempa i perfekcyjnie zasuwa z blastami przez większość kawałków - ale bez takiego plastiku, z jakiego zasłynął później. Nie gorzej też sprawa wygląda od strony gitar, gdzie panowie Erik Rutan oraz Doug Cerrito sypią dość technicznymi i pomysłowymi riffami, z niestety trochę zbyt mocno schowanym basem Jareda w tle. No i wokalnie jest z porządnym wykopem - Erik bez problemu przebija growl Steve'a Tuckera. 

Rozczarowani delikatną niespójnością "Formulas..." (czyt. ilością przerywników, jaką tam upchali) powinni więc z miejsca sprawdzić "Conquering The Throne" - to kawał porządnej i wpadającej w ucho death metalowej muzyki w duchu wszystkiego co najlepsze u Aniołków. Amerykanie z Hate Eternal wiedzieli jak przełożyć wpływy Morbid Angel na coś swojego, a przy tym, znali co do tego umiar. Trudno zatem o lepszą rekomendację przy takim podejściu do komponowania.

My guess is that Erik Rutan's main idea when he was creating Hate Eternal was to play faster, more brutal and even more intense than with Morbid Angel. Well, in the so-called in the meantime, the second of these bands - as I speculate - came up with a similar idea...and released a specifically brutalized "Formulas Fatal To The Flesh"! So the question is, does Hate Eternal's "Conquering The Throne" make any sense from this perspective? The answer is very simple: yeees! 

Hate Eternal is nothing that could be considered a cheeky copy from Morbid Angel - actually, a very sensible answer to Trey Azagthoth's patents and their own perspective of this type of death metal. This applies, for example, to the abovementioned brutality, a slightly different feeling of (some) riffs, the division into two vocals (with a slightly weaker a screaming one) or the general brevity of individual tracks (most stick to the 2-3 minute duration). In practice, it gives such great songs as "By His Own Decree", "Darkness By Oath", "Nailed To Obscurity" or "Dethroned", perfectly matching the Florida death metal standards. 

Now a bit about the musicians themselves contributing to "Conquering...", because I think it's worth mentioning, and they have more conclusions than some of Rutan's next friends. It works nicely on the Tim Yeung playing, which achieves insane pace here and perfectly blasts through most of the tracks - but without the plastic for which he became famous later. The situation is no worse when it comes to guitars, where Erik Rutan and Doug Cerrito slide up with quite technical and inventive riffs, with Jared's bass, unfortunately, a bit too much hidden in the background. And vocally it's a decent kick - Erik easily beats Steve Tucker's growl. 

Disappointed with the delicate incoherence of "Formulas..." (i.e. with the number of intros they stuffed there), should check out "Conquering The Throne" on the spot - it's a piece of decent and catchy death metal music in the spirit of all that is best about Angels. The Americans from Hate Eternal knew how to take the influence of Morbid Angel into something of their own, and at the same time, they knew frugality about it. Therefore, it's difficult to find a better recommendation with this approach to composing.
