Convulse - "World Without God" (1991)

Pomyśleć, że niegdyś Finlandia była ostoją jednego z najbardziej plugawych i chorobliwych odmian death metalu. Okej, dziś również nie ma z tym dramatu, bo pomimo wysypu symfoniczno-powerowo-skocznego syfu, nowe, death metalowe zespoły wciąż tam powstają. Chciałem jednak dobitniej zaznaczyć, że w latach 90. takie nazwy jak m.in. Demilich, Adramelech, Funebre czy właśnie omawiany Convulse miały bardzo wyraźny udział w rozwoju ogólnie pojmowanej ekstremy, a przy tym, każdy z tych zespołów miał swoje indywidualne (i dość unikatowe) cechy charakterystyczne na wagę złota - coś o co teraz ciężko. Jojczyć że kiedyś to było dłużej już nie zamierzam, przejdę z kolei do Convulse - jednego z najważniejszych pionierów fińskiego death metalu, powstałego jeszcze na zgliszczach speed metalowego S.D.S (Seven Death's Sin). Rami Jämsä, Juha Telenius, Janne Miikkulainen oraz Jani Kuhanen debiutując w Convulse pełnoprawnym materiałem bowiem uderzyli jednym z najlepszych obskurnych death metalowych krążków tamtejszych ziem.

Muzyka na ich debiutanckim "World Without God" jest dokładnie taka jak okładka zdobiąca płytę - zimna, tajemnicza i śmiercionośna. W praktyce znaczy to tyle, że całość zdominowały mocno podziemne (niekiedy dość prymitywne) brzmienia, tj. ciężkie, gitarowe piłowanie, growle Ramiego (czasami też niskie, żabie pomruki - coś co można usłyszeć np. w "Blasphemous Verses"), chorobliwe melodie, pokręcone solówki czy naparzankowe bębnienie Jannego. Poza nimi, pojawiają się jednak pewne urozmaicenia. Wśród tych należy nadmienić o złowieszczo brzmiących klawiszach (mega klimatycznych zarówno osobno w "Introduction" jak i w regularnym utworze "Godless Truth"), dzwony ("Putrid Intercourse") czy nawet akustyki (z dużą dawką melancholii w "Powerstruggle Of Belief"). Tak więc na jednostajność na "World..." nie da się narzekać, choć trzeba przyznać, że to te najbardziej pierwotne rytmy i mielenie w średnich tempach przykuwają największą uwagę. Na potwierdzenie: "False Religion", tytułowy, "Incantation Of Restoriation" czy wspomniane "Godless Truth", "Putrid Intercourse" oraz "Powerstruggle Of Belief". Wszystkie z nich (niewymienione również) bardzo sensownie ukazują, gdzie tkwi sedno zróżnicowanego, ale i podziemnego grania death metalu - na tyle by nie było nudnawo czy z przesadnym kombinowaniem. I nie przeszkadza w tym mocno nieczytelna produkcja!

Pierwszy studyjny strzał od Convulse (razem z paroma innymi załogami, o których wspominałem we wstępie - ale nie tylko) to zatem wyśmienity przykład jak kształtował się death metal w Finlandii. Przede wszystkim, chodziło o dorzucenie do prostych i mocno pierwotnych rytmów jeszcze więcej nieprzyjaznej melodyki, trochę gitarowych wygibasów i bardzo grobowej atmosfery. Jak czas pokazał, do takich klimatów jak na "World Without God" udało się dobić naprawdę nielicznym.

To think that Finland was once the mainstay of one of the most sordid and morbid forms of death metal, now this state is something surreal. Well, today there is no drama with it either, because despite the many of symphonic-power-joyful crap, new death metal bands are still forming there. However, I would like to emphasize more clearly that in the 1990s names such as Demilich, Adramelech, Funebre or the discussed Convulse had a very important part in the development of generally extreme music, but each of these band had their own individual (and quite unique) characteristics. Okay, I do not intend to criticize any longer, I will turn to Convulse - one of the most important pioneers of Finnish death metal, created from speed metal S.D.S (Seven Death's Sin). Convulse, including Rami Jämsä, Juha Telenius, Janne Miikkulainen and Jani Kuhanen, on "World Without God" hit with one of the best dingy death metal discs from the Finland. 

The music on their debut album is exactly like the album cover - cold, mysterious and pestilent. In practice, it means that the whole cd is dominated by heavily underground (sometimes quite primitive) sounds, i.e. guitars heaviness, Rami's growls (sometimes also low, frog grunts - it can be heard, for example, in "Blasphemous Verses"), morbid melodies, twisted solos or Janny's infusion drumming. Apart from these elements, however, there are some variations. These include ominous-sounding keyboards (mega-climatic both separately in "Introduction" and in the regular song like "Godless Truth"), church bells ("Putrid Intercourse") or even acoustics (with a large dose of melancholy in "Powerstruggle Of Belief"). So you cannot complain about the uniformity of "World...", although it must be admitted that it's the most primal rhythms and grinding at medium speeds that attract the most attention. To confirm: "False Religion", the title track, "Incantation Of Restoriation" or the mentioned "Godless Truth", "Putrid Intercourse" and "Powerstruggle Of Belief". All of them (but not mentioned also) show very sensibly where the essence of diverse, but also underground death metal playing lies - enough not to be boring or overly combining. And this is not a problem with the highly illegible production! 

The first studio shot from Convulse (along with a few other bands that I mentioned in the introduction - but not only) is therefore an excellent example of how death metal was shaped in Finland. First of all, it was about adding to the simple and very primal rhythms even more unfriendly melodies, some guitar twists and a very gloomy atmosphere. As time has shown, very few bands managed to achieve such unique climates as "World Without God".
