Blessed By Perversion - "Between Roots And Darkness" (2016)

Takie debiuty to ja lubię! Grecy z Blessed By Perversion nie dość, że rozsądnie podeszli do death metalu utrzymanego w nie za szybkich tempach, unikając przy tym jakichś wydumanych eksperymentów czy ładnych melodyjek, to jednocześnie zadbali o to, by udało im się nagrać coś dużo bardziej interesującego i z większym polotem niż średnia krajowa parająca się takim graniem. Otóż, na "Between Roots And Darkness" znalazła się jeszcze jedna rzecz, która wyróżnia Blessed By Perversion spośród innych "młodszych" kapel z tego nurtu i...która zdaje się być delikatnym zaprzeczeniem oldskulowości w klasycznym rozumowaniu! Kwintet podjął się bowiem na swoim debiucie dość radykalnego podejścia, ponieważ...sporo w ich muzyce późnego Deicide (tj. tego od 2006 roku)!

Budzi więc to niemały podziw (ale też pewne obawy), bo inspirujących się melodyjniejszymi płytami amerykańskiego Bogobójstwa nie było aż tak wielu, a o przedobrzenie w takiej stylistyce również nie trudno. Na szczęście u Blessed By Perversion stało się inaczej i śmiało można powiedzieć, że z zadaniem Grecy poradzili sobie zadowalająco i bez obciachu. Robi to tym bardziej wrażenie, bo album, choć totalnie niewybitny (co jednak zrozumiałe), sprawia sporo radochy, potrafi zainteresować i chce się brnąć w jego dalszą część po odpaleniu początku. No i przede wszystkim, muzycy wiedzą kiedy stosować melodie a kiedy mocniej przyłoić (choć i tak z proporcjami nie mają tu problemu), nie skupiają się na ciągłym blastowaniu, potrafią zarzucić sensowniejszym, dłuższym utworem i nie jadą na podwójnej ścieżce growlu i skrzeku jak w kapeli Bentona. Kolejna sprawa, "Between..." przecież nie samymi wpływami późnego Deicide może się poszczycić! Słychać też tutaj trochę inspiracji Cannibal Corpse (zwłaszcza w partiach z ride'm na czele) czy Morbid Angel (w niektórych riffach), co również w tym wypadku należy zaliczyć na plus - jest dużo więcej kombinowania w obrębie tych stylistyk.

Potwierdzają to chociażby takie utwory jak "Close To The Devil's Borders" (w którym znalazło się nawet solo na basie!), "Brainwashing The Unborn", "Lamentation Of Soul" czy "Heretic Seeds Of Salvation", które - moim zdaniem - najlepiej reprezentują całość. Trzeba mieć jednak na uwadze, że właściwie każdy z utworów zamieszczonych na "Between Roots And Darkness" stoi na wysokim poziomie, wszystkie mają jakieś chwytliwe patenty, inne z kolei mogą podobać się melodiami. Fajnie spisują się w nich chociażby gitary (o ile nie najlepiej), ale podobnie dobrze odbiera się tutaj growl Andreasa Moschopoulosa oraz nieco wysublimowaną (tj. bez szaleństw) perkusję. Tak więc wszystko co nie zawsze u "kapeli wyjściowej" sprawdzało się w stu procentach. O "Between Roots And Darkness" nie można niby ogólnie powiedzieć, jakoby była to płyta jakaś totalnie zniewalająca, na poziomie klasyków czy - po drugiej stronie - przebijająca patenty kapeli Bentona, to jednak słucha się jej dobrze, jest fajnie skomponowana i słychać, że muzycy z Blessed By Perversion dali od siebie wiele, by zrobić te kawałki - pomimo wyraźnych inspiracji - po swojemu.

I like such debuts! The Greeks from Blessed By Perversion not only wisely approached death metal kept in not too fast paces, while avoiding any fancy experiments or pretty melodies, but also made sure that they managed to record something much more interesting and with greater panache than the most of average bands from this genre. Well, on "Between Roots And Darkness" there is one more thing that distinguishes Blessed By Perversion from other "younger" bands from this style and...which seems to be a delicate contradiction of old school in classical reasoning! The quintet took quite a radical approach on its debut, because...a lot of late Deicide in their music (ie. since 2006)! 

So it's quite admirable (but also some fears), because there were not so many inspired by more melodic Deicide albums, and it's also not easy to change in such a style. Fortunately, Blessed By Perversion was different and it's safe to say that the Greeks coped with the task satisfactorily and without embarrassment. It's even more impressive, because the album, although totally unremarkable (which is understandable), makes a lot of fun, can be interesting and wants to wade into its further part after the beginning of album. And most of all, musicians know when to use melodies and when to apply harder (although they have no problem with the proportions here anyway), they do not focus on continuous blasting, they can do a more meaningful, longer track and do not go on a double track of growling and screeching as in Benton's band. Another thing, "Between..." it can boast not only the influences of the late Deicide! You can also hear a bit of inspiration from Cannibal Corpse (especially in parts with a ride) or Morbid Angel (in some riffs), which is also a plus in this case - there is a lot more combination within these styles. 

This is confirmed by such songs as "Close To The Devil's Borders" (which even included a bass solo!), "Brainwashing The Unborn", "Lamentation Of Soul" or "Heretic Seeds Of Salvation", which - in my opinion - the best they represent the whole cd. You have to bear in mind, however, that virtually every track on "Between Roots And Darkness" is at a high level, all of the tracks have some catchy patents, others may like melodies. For example, the guitars are great for them (if not the best), but the growl of Andreas Moschopoulos and a bit sublime (i.e. without madness) percussion are similarly well received here. So everything that was not always in the "starting band" turned out to be one hundred percent. About "Between Roots And Darkness" you can not generally say that it was a totally captivating album, on the level of classics or - on the other side - above the patents of Benton's band, but it's good to listen to, it's well composed and you can hear from Blessed By Perversion that they have gone a long way to make the songs - despite the clear inspiration - in their own way.
