Synkronizity - "Cultivation" (2012)

Comeback do metalowych brzmień Tony'ego Choya trudno uznać za jakoś szczególnie udany, najpierw nie zagrzał on zbyt długo miejsca w powrotnym Atheist (i przede wszystkim nie załapał się na album), gdzieś tam w oddali brał udział w C-187 i (chwilowo) powrotnym Pestilence, a trochę później muzyk ten zdążył powołać do życia własny projekt, który szczeeerze mówiąc, bynajmniej mnie, ani ziębi ani grzeje (a chyba powinien). Synkronizity - bo o nim mowa - to twór, który w zasadzie jest dość techniczny, progresywny oraz w jakimś tam stopniu wykraczający ponad standardy, ale jednocześnie...jest tak mało konkretny i pod wieloma względami (o których później) średnio porywający, że nie dziwi jego totalnie nieznany status w tej niszy. Co gorsza, nawet kilka bardziej szanowanych nazwisk nie pomogło uczynić z "Cultivation" materiału jakoś specjalnie atrakcyjnym.

Skład tej formacji zasilili - obok Choya - nie mniej utalentowani Santiago Dobles i Matt Thompson, a także raczej nieznani temu światku Arbise Gonzalez oraz Grant Petty. No i o ile bębnienie Thompsona, solówki i część riffów Doblesa pięknie kojarzą się z Aghorą, a z ogólnej perspektywy wydają się być najciekawszymi elementami "Cultivation", tak o pozostałej trójce trochę trzeba się natrudzić, by powiedzieć coś dobrego. Dziwi w szczególności bas, który raptem w paru utworach wybija się jakoś ciekawiej i nie trzyma kurczowo linii gitar. Wydawać by się mogło, że skoro to projekt Tony'ego, to jego talent będzie przodował, no ale nie!, w przypadku "Cultivation" można zapomnieć o jakichś większych szaleństwach, z których ten muzyk jest znany. Pozostała tylko namiastka. W dalszej kolejności rozczarowują klawisze autorstwa Arbise'a Gonzaleza, które - poza tymi jazzowo brzmiącymi - pasują jak pięść do oka, a jeszcze większej pikanterii dodają (w tym negatywnym sensie) wokale Granta Petty'ego - bezjajeczne zarówno od strony growlingów oraz czystych zaśpiewów. Fajne riffy, solówki i perka to jak widać jakby ciutkę za mało na porządne wydawnictwo.

W ogóle na "Cultivation" strasznie mało upchnięto muzyki. Ta płyta to raptem 7 utworów, z czego pięć to te "normalne", jeden to cover The Police ("Synchronicity"), a jeden to samba ("Latin Breeze"). I o ile dwa ostatnie dość dobrze pokazują talent Choya do eksperymentowania, tak z tych "normalnych", które od początku do końca potrafią powalić jestem w stanie wymienić...tylko "The Follower". Tak więc jak na 3/5 gwiazdorskiej ekipy wynik mizerny. Okej, pozostałe z nich nie są jakieś fatalne, ale brak im sensownej progresji, dobrych wokali i jakiejś myśli przewodniej. Wyszedł z tego po prostu misz-masz wszystkiego co akurat zespół miał pod ręką, i to w tym najgorszym przypadku, byleby jakkolwiek zaskoczyć. Cóż, czasami jednak lepiej zawęzić ramy kombinatorstwa.

Tony Choy's coming back to metal sounds can hardly be considered particularly successful, first he did not stay long in the returning Atheist (and above all he did not record the album with them), somewhere in the distance he took part in the C-187 and (temporarily) reunited Pestilence, later this musician managed to bring to life his own project that, frankly speaking, will not satisfy me, but I think it should. Synkronizity - which one I am talking about - is a project that is basically quite technical, progressive and to some extent exceeding the standards, but at the same time...is so vague and in many respects (about which later) moderately thrilling that its totally unknown status in this style is not surprising. Worse, even a few more respected names did not help make "Cultivation" material especially attractive. 

The line-up of this band was refilled - next to Choy - by the equally talented Santiago Dobles and Matt Thompson, as well as Arbise Gonzalez and Grant Petty, rather unknown. And while Thompson's drumming, solos and some Dobles riffs are beautifully associated with Aghora style, and from the general perspective they seem to be the most interesting elements of "Cultivation", the other three take a bit of effort to say something good. The bass in particular is surprising, but only in a few tracks it stands out somehow more interestingly and does not hold tightly to the guitar line. It would seem that since this is Tony's project, his talent will excel, but no! In the case of "Cultivation" you can forget about some bigger madness that this musician is known for. Only a substitute remained. The next disappointing are the keyboards by Arbise Gonzalez, which - apart from the jazz-sounding ones - totally don't fit to anything, and definitely the worst vocals by Grant Petty's - without power from both sides, growlings and clear singing. Cool riffs, solos and a drums seem like a bit too little for a decent release. 

In general, "Cultivation" has not enough music for these musicians. This album consists of only 7 tracks, five of which are "normal" ones, one is a cover of The Police ("Synchronicity"), and one is samba ("Latin Breeze"). And while the last two show Choy's talent for experimenting quite well, I can name only the "The Follower" of the "normal" ones, which can delight from start to finish. So for a 3/5 a star cast the results are poor. Okay, the rest of them aren't fatal, but they lack meaningful progression, good vocals, and a keynote. It just resulted in a mix of everything the band had on hand at the time, and in the worst case, if only to surprise. Well, sometimes it's better to narrow down the combining.
