Voracious Scourge - "In Death" (2020)

Super, że tacy muzycy jak Mike Smith oraz Tony Choy - pomimo że coraz mniej aktywni - nadal próbują sił (z różnym skutkiem, patrz: Fire For Effect, ale jednak) i potrafią się skusić na dość nietypowe jak na swoje standardy granie - w szczególności ten drugi, którego wcześniejsze projekty totalnie (mnie) nie przekonywały. Tym razem pod nazwą Voracious Scourge zdecydowali się oni bowiem na...death metal w dość oldschoolowej formie, odległej od macierzystych kapel tej dwójki! No ale ale, szybko się okazuje, że przecież nie oni dwaj stoją za główną ideą tego projektu. Pomimo obecności tak ważnej persony jak Aad Kloosterwaard (niegdyś perkusista, od 2005 roku wokalista Sinister), to panowie gitarzyści, tj. Jason McIntyre oraz - w znacznie mniejszym stopniu - Billy Richard, mimo że raczej nieznani, odcisnęli największe piętno na całokształt grania Voracious Scourge.

Ich debiut pt. "In Death" to death metal raczej nieprzesadnie skomplikowany, przeważnie trzymający się średnich temp i bliski - no któż by się spodziewał! - późnego Sinister. Ciekawa sprawa, bo w wielu miejscach naprawdę można się złapać jakby to Holendrzy grali z jakimś nieopublikowanym wcześniej materiałem aniżeli zupełnie inny band! Mnie tam to ogólnie średnio przeszkadza i lepiej że panowie nie uczynili czegoś wbrew sobie, ale tutaj...paradoksalnie, pojawia się pierwszy zgrzyt! Bo nie ukrywam, że bez względu na oryginalność lub jej brak, materiał do najbardziej porywających (i angażujących) niestety nie należy, tym bardziej, że potencjał był całkiem duży - patrząc na możliwości tej ekipy. O ile od strony techniki i klimatu przeważnie wszystko gra jak należy (choć niekiedy trochę szkoda, że sekcja nie poszalała bardziej), o tyle problem z "In Death" jest taki, że od strony kompozytorskiej, tj. polotu, zróżnicowania i brutalności, brakuje mu dość sporo. Wzorce i skład trafił się Voracious Scourge oczywiście przedni, tyle że "In Death" sprawia wrażenie jakby to, owszem, grał Sinister, ale...w tym gorszym wydaniu.

Potwierdzeniem są same kompozycje. Daleko im do złych czy jakichś niesamowicie irytujących, ba!, takie "A Life Condemned" (z fajnym tappingowym patentem), "Defleshed Messiah" czy "Mental Enslavement" mogą się wręcz podobać. Problem polega jednak na tym, że pozostałe z nich obok konkretnych i chwytliwszych patentów zawierają zaskakująco dużo tych rozwodnionych (jak np. w "Heaven's Scorched") i przeciągniętych - i to te przeważają na krążku. Na koniec znalazł się jeszcze "Born Dead" z repertuaru Death, ale tutaj nie będę się specjalnie rozwodzić. Tylu zdołało zcoverować ten utwór, że i większego objaśnienia przy nim nie trzeba - wersja Voracious Scourge wiernie trzyma się oryginału (poza niskimi wokalami Aada) i jako taki smaczek na finiszu sprawdza się fajnie. No i dobra, jak na średniaka słucha się tego całkiem przyzwoicie, bez spiny i kręcenia nosem, choć tak jak wspominałem, opadu szczeny, zaskoczenia czymkolwiek czy solidnego przyjebania oldskulem to się na tym wydawnictwie na próżno doszukiwać. Może i zbyt wygórowane podejście, ale po wydawnictwie w takiej ekipie liczyłem na trochę więcej.

It's great that musicians such as Mike Smith and Tony Choy - despite the fact that they are less and less active - still try (with varying results, see: Fire For Effect, but still) and are tempted to play quite unusual by their standards - in particular the latter, which earlier projects totally did not convince (me). This time, under the name of Voracious Scourge, they decided to play...death metal in a rather old-school form, distant from the main bands of these two! Well, it quickly turns out that they are not the two of them behind the main idea of ​​this project. Despite the presence of such an important persona as Aad Kloosterwaard (former drummer, since 2005 Sinister singer), the guitarists, i.e. Jason McIntyre and - to a much lesser extent - Billy Richard, although rather unknown, left the greatest mark on the overall performance of Voracious Scourge. 

Their debut entitled "In Death" is a death metal rather not overly complicated, usually sticking to medium paces and close - who would have expected it! - late Sinister. An interesting thing, because in many places you can really catch as if the Dutch from Sinister were playing here with some previously unpublished material rather than a completely different band! It bothers me on average there, and it's better that the band did not do something against themselves, but here - paradoxically - there is the first, serious gripe. Because I must admit that, regardless of originality or lack of it, the material should not be the most thrilling (and engaging), especially when the potential was huge. While from the point of view of technique and climate, everything usually sounds as it should (although sometimes it's a pity that the section did not go more crazy), the problem with "In Death" is that from the compositional side, i.e. inspirations, diversity and brutality, there is no quite a lot to it. The patterns and the line-up hit the Voracious Scourge front, of course, but "In Death" gives the impression that Sinister was playing here, but...in this worse edition. 

The compositions themselves are the confirmation. They are far from bad or some incredibly annoying, well!, such "A Life Condemned" (with a nice tapping patent), "Defleshed Messiah" or "Mental Enslavement" can even be liked. The problem, however, is that the rest of them, apart from specific and more catchy patents, contain surprisingly many nondescript ones (like in "Heaven's Scorched") and too lengthy - and these are the ones that dominate the album. At the end there is also Death's cover ("Born Dead"), but I will not be too specific here. So many bands managed to cover this track that and there is no need for more explanation with it - the version of Voracious Scourge stays faithfully to the original (except of Aad's low vocals) and as such a surprise at the end works great. Well, for an average cd, it's quite decent to listen to, with calm and brooding, although as I mentioned, there are no revelations here or any astonishments, so something like this will be hard to find on this release. Maybe too exorbitant approach from me, but after cd in such a line-up I was expecting on a little more.
