Nocturnus - "The Key" (1990)

Pierwszy death metal z keyboardem jako pełnoprawnym instrumentem i kosmiczną tematyką, czyli Nocturnus. Na tak interesującą i oryginalną koncepcję bowiem wpadł - wyrzucony z Morbid Angel - perkusista/wokalista Mike Browning, a w pełni udało się ją zrealizować razem z klawiszowcem Louisem Panzerem, gitarzystami Mikem Davisem i Seanem McNenneyem oraz basistą Jeffem Estesem za sprawą debiutanckiego albumu "The Key" (choć pod to należałoby podciągnąć jeszcze demówki, w szczególności drugą - "The Science Of Horror"). W ten oto sposób powstała jedna z najciekawszych płyt łączących dość pierwotny death metal z klimatami s-f.

Muzyka w wykonaniu Nocturnus charakteryzuje się więc często udzielającymi się (również w formie solówek!) klawiszami, sporą techniką gitarowego duetu (na czele z ich firmowymi, paro-sekundowymi solówkami), tendencją do kombinowania w strukturach utworów (mimo że jest chwytliwie), tajemniczym klimatem oraz...osobą frontmana - wyszczekującego kolejne frazy i szalejącego za zestawem perkusyjnym raczej oszczędnie. Efekty tej pomysłowości oczywiście eksplodowały z olbrzymim rozmachem (co widać po ocenie poniżej), no ale najważniejsze, przełożyła się ona na kawał znakomitych kompozycji, ociekających w genialne patenty niemal na każdym kroku i których po prostu świetnie się słucha! Spore wrażenie robi na "The Key" chociażby technika, ilość porywających riffów (niektóre jakby w duchu Slayera), patenty na rozwinięcie danych motywów, choć chyba najbardziej, dreszczowy i jednocześnie uroczo kiczowaty klimat, przenoszący tak wyraźnie tę muzykę w kosmos. Na potwierdzenie - żeby nie wymieniać wszystkiego - "Before Christ/After Death", "Droid Sector", "Visions From Beyond The Grave" oraz "Lake Of Fire". Na dodatkowe potwierdzenie (choć zakładam, że takowe specjalnie potrzebne nie jest) - znakomita okładka Dana SeaGrave'a.

Jak się szybko okazało, "The Key" to o dziwo ostatni etap zespołowej (słowo-klucz) działalności Nocturnus. Chwilę po wydaniu tegoż krążka w kapeli zaczęły się bowiem niesnaski, wszelkiego rodzaju podziały i burdy ciągnące się latami, w większości na niekorzyść członków. Najciekawsze też, że później - jak na ironię - udało im się stworzyć trochę sensownej muzyki, w duchu tego co osiągnęli na "The Key". No a w tym też poniekąd dopatrywałbym się geniuszu tej płyty.

The first death metal with a keyboard as a full-fledged instrument and cosmic theme - Nocturnus. The drummer/vocalist Mike Browning - that was kicked out of the Morbid Angel - came up with such an interesting and original concept, and it was fully realized together with keyboardist Louis Panzer, guitarists Mike Davis and Sean McNenney and bassist Jeff Estes on their debut album "The Key" (although it would be necessary to pull up some demos, especially the second one - "The Science Of Horror"). This is how one of the most interesting albums combining quite primal death metal with s-f climates was created. 

The music performed by Nocturnus is therefore characterized by frequently appearing (also in the form of solos!) keyboards, a large guitar duo technique (led by their proprietary, few-second solos), a tendency to combine in the structure of the songs (despite being catchy), mysterious climate and...the person of the frontman - "barking" subsequent phrases and playing rather sparingly from the drums side. The effects of this ingenuity, of course, exploded with enormous momentum (as can be seen from the rating below), but most importantly, it came into a great number of excellent compositions, dripping with brilliant patents at almost every step and which are simply great to listen to! For example, the technique, the number of thrilling riffs (some as if in the spirit of Slayer), patents to develop certain motifs, though probably the most exciting and at the same time charmingly kitschy atmosphere, make a great impression on "The Key", carrying this music so clearly into space. As confirmation - not to mention everything - "Before Christ/After Death", "Droid Sector", "Visions From Beyond The Grave" and "Lake Of Fire". For additional confirmation (although I assume that one is not especially needed) - the excellent cover of Dan SeaGrave. 

As it turned out, "The Key" is surprisingly the last stage of Nocturnus' band (key-word) activity. Moments after the release of this disc, disagreements began in the band, all kinds of divisions and brawls that lasted for years, mostly harmed to the members of this band. The most interesting thing is that later - ironically - they managed to create some meaningful music, in the spirit of what they achieved on "The Key". And in that, too, I would see the genius of this cd.
