Incantation - "Onward To Golgotha" (1992)

Zapuszczając się w nieco głębsze rejony podziemia jednym z najważniejszych zespołów, na jaki bym się powołał (i pewnie znaczna większość) byłby właśnie amerykański Incantation. Początki tejże kapeli datuje się na 1989, tuż po tym, gdy - mózg Incantation - gitarzysta John McEntee zdecydował się opuścić Revenant i założył swoją własną grupę. Wtedy zaczął formować się jej skład, materiał na demówki i - co najważniejsze - pełną płytę (a po drodze był jeszcze krótki epizod Johna w Mortician). Finalnie, "Onward To Golgotha" w składzie: John McEntee - gitara, Craig Pillard - wokale/gitara, Ronny Deo - bas oraz Jim Roe - perkusja, wydano w 1992 roku, a efekty tych nagrań były jeszcze bardziej druzgocące niż debiuty Deicide czy Immolation - że tak zarzucę analogią totalnie z dupy.

Temat wydaje się być prosty. Otóż, w czasach ukazywania się "Onward..." tak podziemnie, bestialsko i surowo grało stosunkowo niewielu. Co więcej, na tle innych death metalowych płyt z tamtego okresu, debiut Incantation był jeszcze mniej łaskawy dla słuchającego i...szczerze mówiąc, bardzo dobrze! Bo takiej dawki zgnilizny, brutalności oraz obłąkanego klimatu przywdzianej w spójne i jednakowo utrzymujące uwagę kompozycje - nawet dziś! - na próżno szukać w tej stylistyce - a bynajmniej nie w takich ilościach jakich by się zdało oczekiwać. Każdy riff, slayerowskie solówki, okładanie zestawu przez Roe czy - dla odmiany - doom metalowe zwolnienia są bowiem idealnie wstrzelone w klimat piwnicy, a jakby tego jeszcze było mało, zespół miał w zanadrzu kolejny rarytas, czyli wokal Craiga - kurewsko niski i iście grobowy. Przy takich kawałkach jak np. "Christening The Afterbirth", "Devoured Death", "Blasphemous Cremation" czy "Immortal Cessation", jako tych najbardziej reprezentatywnych (choć każdy się nadaje), nie sposób odmówić mocy i wyjątkowości, jaka bije z tej muzyki. Od pierwszych sekund "Golgotha" właściwie jest to już słyszalne.

Spośród wszystkich płyt obracających się wokół tzw. gruzu, "Onward To Golgotha" jest jedną z moich ulubionych pozycji. Rzekłbym ładnie, że już na tym etapie pokazała ona Incantation w swoim najlepszym wydaniu, ale nijak by mi to pasowało do kolejnych tekstów, gdzie poziom dwóch następnych wydawnictw tej kapeli był równie ultra-wysoki. "Onward..." pozostaje więc w mojej opinii po prostu początkiem wielkości Incantation.

Warto jeszcze wspomnieć, że na albumie nie znalazł się jeden utwór - "Eternal Torture" - znany z drugiego dema i epki "Entrantment Of Evil". Poziomem i stylem nie ustępuje on pozostałym, "podstawowym" utworom z "Onward...", a z początku można wręcz uznać, że został on pominięty przypadkowo...W każdym razie, "Eternal Torture" obecnie jest dołączany do albumu jako bonus - dla fanów mus.

Going deeper into the underground, one of the most important bands that I would refer to (and probably the vast majority) would be the American Incantation. The beginnings of this band date back to 1989, right after - the brain of Incantation - guitarist John McEntee decided to leave Revenant and founded his own group. Then its line-up, material for demos and - most importantly - a full album began to form (and there was also a short episode of John in Mortician's line-up). Finally, "Onward To Golgotha" composed of: John McEntee - guitars, Craig Pillard - vocals/guitars, Ronny Deo - bass and Jim Roe - drums were released it in 1992, and the effects of these recordings were even more devastating than the debuts of Deicide or Immolation - I know, analogy completely inadequate, but nevermind. 

The topic seems simple. Well, at the time when "Onward..." was released, relatively few played so underground, brutally and raw. What's more, compared to other death metal albums from that period, Incantation's debut was even less kind to the listener and...honestly, very good! Because such a dose of rottenness, brutality and insane atmosphere in coherent and equally attracting compositions are hard - even today! - to look for in this style - and by no means in such quantities as one might expect. Each riff, Slayer-like solos, Roe's intensive drumming or - on the other side - doom metal slowdowns are perfectly fitted into the atmosphere of the underground, and as if that was not enough, the band had another rarity, i.e. Craig's vocals - low and like from the grave. With tracks such as "Christening The Afterbirth", "Devoured Death", "Blasphemous Cremation" or "Immortal Cessation", as the most "representative" (although every of them are suitable), it's impossible to deny the power and uniqueness that beats from this music. Well, from the very first seconds of "Golgotha" it's actually audible. 

Of all the cd about the so-called cavernous death metal, "Onward To Golgotha" is one of my favorite recordings. I would say nicely that this is "underground at its best", but it would not suit in any way, considering the ultra-high level of the next two releases. So "Onward..." remains in my opinion just the beginning of greatness of Incantation.

It's also worth mentioning that the album does not contain one track - "Eternal Torture" - known from the second demo and ep "Entrantment Of Evil". In terms of level and style, it's not inferior to the other "basic" songs from "Onward...", and at first you can even say that it was omitted accidentally...Anyway, "Eternal Torture" is now included in the album as a bonus - a must-have for fans.
