Cannibal Corpse - "Eaten Back To Life" (1990)

Cannibal Corpse, dla jednych zespół esencjonalny w kategoriach amerykańskiego death metalu, dla drugich, kapela głównie rozchwytywana za sprawą obrazoburczych okładek. Osobiście, ulokowałbym siebie gdzieś w innych kategoriach; jako po prostu słuchacza lubującego ich granie, ale bez przesadnych spustów czy uwzględniania ilości flaków na okładkach (od tego są tzw. obrońcy poprawności). Doceniam w Cannibal Corpse za to, że Amerykanie dość szybko wypracowali swój specyficzny styl, tj. grania death metalu mocno nastawionego na koncertowe rytmy (do machania łbem oczywiście), z gore'ową brutalnością, nieprzesadną techniką i z rasowym growlem. Takie rzeczy oczywiście znalazły się już na ich debiutanckim "Eaten Back To Life", choć trzeba przyznać, że tutaj...w wersji jeszcze wyraźnie nieokrzesanej i bez tylu dołów co w przyszłości!

W każdym razie, "Eaten Back To Life" to solidny materiał. Przeważa tu oczywiście death metal w stylu jaki zdążyłem nakreślić w pierwszym akapicie, z tą różnicą, że na tym etapie Cannibal Corpse jeszcze znacząco czerpali z thrashu - od czego później odeszli. Wpływy tej stylistyki to przede wszystkim częstsze, gitarowe piłowanie, popylanie bez klasycznie pojmowanych blastów oraz okazjonalne, skandowanie w refrenach. Poza tym, czyli jednak w większości, "Eaten..." uderza w ciężar i brutalność. To z kolei - jak łatwo się domyśleć - zasługa mięsistych riffów, sporej ilości nakurwiania, growlów Chrisa Barnesa oraz dość wisielczego klimatu całości (co najlepiej wypada w "Born In A Casket" i "Scattered Remains, Splattered Brains"). Łomot w tej najprostszej formie też rzecz jasna może się tu podobać. Takie kawałki jak "Rotting Head", "Edible Autopsy", "Put Them To Death" (z fajnie wygrowlowanym "fuck you!!!") czy "Shredded Humans" błyszczą jeśli chodzi o energię, moc czy ogólny czad. Nieco słabiej robi się jedynie pod koniec, gdzie poszczególne utwory w typie "The Undead Will Feast" czy "Buried In The Backyard" zaczynają już lecieć na jedno kopyto i nie wyróżniają się aż tak mocno co wymienione powyżej.

Jako całość, "Eaten Back To Life" wypada jednak bardzo sensownie. Już na tym etapie dało się u Amerykanów odczuć bowiem własny zamysł na granie i chęć zawojowania na większą skalę. Przy okazji, można również po raz pierwszy się przekonać, że Cannibal Corpse nie grali w kółko tego samego - jak to się od niektórych znawców słyszy.

Cannibal Corpse, for some an essential band in terms of American death metal, for others, a band mainly in demand due to iconoclastic covers. Personally, I would place myself somewhere else in other categories; as simply a listener who likes to listen to them, but without revelations or with taking into quantity of guts on the covers (this is why the so-called social activists are oversensitive). I appreciate in Cannibal Corpse that the Americans quite quickly developed their specific style, i.e. playing death metal strongly focused on simple rhythms (head banging, of course), with gore brutality, not exaggerated technique and powerful growl. Of course, such things have already appeared on their debut "Eaten Back To Life", although it must be admitted that here...in a still clearly uncouth version and without as many pits as in the future! 

Anyway, "Eaten Back To Life" is a solid material. Of course, death metal in the style I have outlined in the first paragraph prevails here, but with the difference that at this period Cannibal Corpse still drew on thrash - which they later left these ideas. The influences of this style include more frequent in guitars, sawing riffing, playing without classically defined blasts and occasional chanting in the chorus. Besides, that is, for the most part, "Eaten..." aims at heaviness and brutality. This in turn - as you can easily guess - is due to fleshy riffs, huge dose of brutality, Chris Barnes' growls and quite gallows atmosphere of the whole (which is best in "Born In A Casket" and "Scattered Remains, Splattered Brains"). Of course, a classic death metal in its simplest form can also be enjoyed here. Songs such as "Rotting Head", "Edible Autopsy", "Put Them To Death" (with a cool "fuck you!!!") and "Shredded Humans" shine by energy and overall power. It gets a bit weaker only at the end, when individual tracks like "The Undead Will Feast" or "Buried In The Backyard" seem to be composed too much similarly and do not stand out as much as mentioned above. 

As a whole, "Eaten Back To Life" makes sense though. Already at this period, the Americans could feel their own intention to play death metal and the desire to conquer on a larger scale. By the way, you can also find out for the first time that the Cannibal Corpse did not play the same thing over and over again - as some experts say.
