Demigod - "Shadow Mechanics" (2002)

Równe 10 lat zajęło nim Finowie z Demigod uderzyli z następcą znakomitego "Slumber Of Sullen Eyes". Nie znaczy to jednak, że przez ten długaśny czas nic się u nich w obozie nie działo. Wręcz przeciwnie!, jak się spojrzy na genezę powstawania "Shadow Mechanics" można by rzec, że działo się u nich aż zbyt wiele. Od czasów debiutu do "Shadow..." Finowie bowiem zdołali zamrozić swoją działalność na trzy lata, wydali łącznie cztery wydawnictwa promo (z w większości powtórzonym materiałem na omawianym krążku) oraz zdążyli porządnie przetasować skład. Niestety, nie wynikło z tego nic dobrego. Z zespołem pożegnał się - jeszcze w 1998 roku - wcześniejszy frontman i mózg kapeli Esa Lindén, a sama muzyka drastycznie straciła na jakości.

Obwiniać należałoby właściwie całą grupę. "Shadow Mechanics" to twór totalnie pokraczny i nie mający żadnego powiązania z klasą "Slumber Of Sullen Eyes". W niepamięć odeszły szybsze tempa, mocarne growle, tajemniczy klimat czy niecodzienny feeling. Zamiast tego, "Shadow..." oferuje bardzo bezpieczne, podtatusiowate granie, nijakie melodie i marne wokalizy. Słowem: uleciało z Demigod wszystko co wyjątkowe. Kolejna rzecz, Finowie sporo namieszali w kwestiach wokali. Otóż, na stanowisku Esy pojawiło się tu...aż trzech wokalistów! No i w tym miejscu również dostrzegam potworną wadę tego wydawnictwa. Bo pomimo podobnych stylów śpiewania wszystkich trzech panów, zarówno growle jak i czyste wokale (to akurat nowość) wypadają bardzo kiepsko. Ba, przy tym drugim typie śpiewu można poczuć, jakby grupa chciała przekonać do siebie...popowych słuchaczy!

Najgorsze też, że "Shadow Mechanics" dałoby się jeszcze odratować. Słychać to po jedynym tutaj bardzo dobrym "Gates Of Lamentation" (mógłby się wstrzelić na debiut), a przede wszystkim po promówkach z roczników 93' i 94', gdzie zespół wiedział jak bez przeginania wpleść melodie i lżejsze klimaty do wcześniejszego stylu (polecam poszukać po necie). W aktualnej formie, "Shadow Mechanics" średnio się w ogóle opłaca nabywać. Niewiele na nim Demigoda, a pod innymi względami, płyta ta nie broni się jakkolwiek lepiej. Nie dziwi więc, że ich pierwszy reunion totalnie olano.

It took 10 years for the Finns from Demigod to hit the successor to the excellent "Slumber Of Sullen Eyes". However, this does not mean that during that long time nothing happened with these musicians. On the contrary!, when you look at the genesis of recording of "Shadow Mechanics", there could be said that too much happened with them. Since their debut to "Shadow...", the Finns managed to freeze their activities for three years, released four promo releases (with mostly repeated material on the discussed album) and managed to change the line-up. Unfortunately, nothing good came of it. The former frontman and the main member Esa Lindén left the band (even in 1998) and the music itself drastically lost its quality. 

Actually, the whole group should be blamed. "Shadow Mechanics" is a cd that is totally clumsy and has no connection with the "Slumber Of Sullen Eyes" class. Faster paces, mighty growls, mysterious atmosphere and unusual feeling are all gone. Instead, "Shadows..." offers very safe, daddy metal, bland melodies and lame vocals. In a short: everything that is exceptional has disappeared from Demigod. Next one thing, the Finns also mixed up a lot in terms of vocals. Well, in Esa's place there were...as many as three singers! And at this point, I hear a monstrous flaw of this release too. Despite the similar singing styles of all three men, both the growls and clean vocals (which is something new) are very poor. In fact, with the latter type of singing, you can feel as if the group wanted to convince...pop listeners! 

The worst is that "Shadow Mechanics" could be changed to the better album. You can hear it after the only very good "Gates Of Lamentation" here (this track could be on the debut), and above all after the 93 'and 94' promos, where the band knew how to weave melodies and lighter atmosphere into the earlier style without bending it (I recommend checking it on the internet). In its current form, "Shadow Mechanics" makes no sense to check. There is not much true Demigod on it, and in other respects, this album doesn't do any better. So it's not surprising that their first reunion was totally ignored.
