Obscura - "Cosmogenesis" (2009)

Imponujące jak bardzo niemiecka Obscura rozwinęła się na przestrzeni - dosłownie - paru lat od czasów "Retribution". Przede wszystkim, z poprzedniego składu ostał się jedynie jego rdzeń, czyli Steffen Kummerer (w późniejszych latach, stety i niestety, stanie się to standardem), a na miejsce tamtej, raczej niezbyt rozchwytywanej ekipy, zawitało samo crème de la crème technicznego wymiatania, tj. gitarzysta Christian Münzner i perkusista Hannes Grossmann (obaj wcześniej znani z Necrophagist) oraz basista Jeroen Paul Thesseling (ten z kolei z Pestilence). Z nimi właśnie powstał "Cosmogenesis" - jedna z najlepszych płyt w XXI w. jeśli chodzi o kosmiczno-progresywno-techniczny death metal.

Muzyka na "Cosmogenesis" nabrała po prostu jasno określonego kierunku, stąd też mój spory entuzjazm. Pokazała, że do patentów Necrophagist oraz Death da się podejść na świeżo, a także, że poziomem zajebistości nie będzie problemem dorównać swoim pierwowzorom (tym razem bez morbidowania). No bo co my tu właściwie mamy? Masę technicznego wywijania, solidnego blastowania, pokręconych solówek, falującego basu (również z solówkami), skrzeczano-growlowanych wokali, kosmicznego klimatu, trochę akustyków, sensownych melodii (wśród których warto nadmienić o udanych [i przetworzonych przez elektronikę] wokalach - tutaj olbrzymi ukłon w stronę Cynic), a wszystko to bez utraty brutalności czy sztuki dla sztuki. Przy tego typu zajebistych albumach nie ma więc mowy o słabszych utworach. Wszystkie zasługują na wyróżnienie, a wśród tych naj-naj nadmieniłbym o "Noospheres", "Choir Of Spirits", "Incarnated", "Orbital Elements" czy "The Anticosmic Overload", choć i te nie przychodzi mi najłatwiej wybrać spośród takiego zestawienia. Ba, nawet dość sterylna produkcja pasuje do całokształtu "Cosmogenesis".

Tym właśnie sposobem (odmieniona) ekipa Steffena Kummerera objawiła się jako jedna z najciekawszych w dziedzinie technicznego i progresywnego grania death metalu, spośród zespołów tak obficie inspirujących się Necrophagist i Death. Za sprawą "Cosmogenesis" bowiem kwartet ten pokazał, że można po swojemu tworzyć muzykę na najwyższym poziomie, ale bez nachalnych zrzynek czy zbyt rozwodnionej progresji. Czyli w nieosiągalnym stylu dla większości kapel z tego nurtu.

Impressive how much the German Obscura has developed over - literally - a few years since the times of "Retribution". First of all, only its core, i.e. Steffen Kummerer (in later years, fortunately and unfortunately, it will become a standard), has remained from the previous line-up, and the place of that, rather not very popular line-up, was replaced by the crème de la crème of technical playing, i.e. guitarist Christian Münzner and drummer Hannes Grossmann (both previously known from Necrophagist) and bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling (the latter from Pestilence). With them, "Cosmogenesis" was created - one of the best albums of the cosmic-progressive-technical death metal in the 21st century. 

The music on "Cosmogenesis" just took a clearly defined direction, hence my enthusiasm. It showed that the Necrophagist and Death patents can be approached fresh, and that the level of awesomeness will not be a problem to match their prototypes (this time without morbiding). Because what do we actually have here? A lot of technical waving, solid blasting, twisted solos, waving bass (also with solos), squawking-growing vocals, cosmic atmosphere, some acoustics, sensible melodies (among which it's worth mentioning the successful [and processed by electronics] vocals - here a huge influence from Cynic), all without losing brutality or art for art's sake. With this type of awesome albums, there is no question of weaker songs. All of them deserve a mention, and among those I would mention most of the most are: "Noospheres", "Choir Of Spirits", "Incarnated", "Orbital Elements" or "The Anticosmic Overload", although for me it's not the easiest way to choose from such a tracklist. Well, even quite sterile production fits the overall "Cosmogenesis". 

This is how the (transformed) band of Steffen Kummerer emerged as one of the most interesting in the genre of technical and progressive death metal, among the bands so abundantly inspired by Necrophagist and Death. By "Cosmogenesis", this quartet showed that you can create music at the highest level in your own way, but without intrusive copying or artificial progression. So they showed it in an unattainable style for most bands from this trend.
