Adramelech - "Seven" (1998)

O tym, że kapela Jarkka Rantanena nigdy nie należała do największych szczęściarzy nie będę się tu specjalnie rozwodził; przypuszczam, że powstałby z tego osobny post. Wspomnę tylko, że "Psychostasia" - choć genialna w całej swojej rozciągłości - nie spotkała się ze zbyt entuzjastycznym odbiorem (a na taki zasługiwała) i dość szybko przepadła w podziemiu jako że 1996 rok nie należał do najbardziej łaskawych dla death metalowych wydawnictw. Finów z Loimaa jednak to nie zraziło. Błyskawicznie po debiucie postanowili oni delikatnie pozmieniać skład (Jarkko znów przeskoczył na stanowisko gitarzysty/wokalisty, Seppo Taatila z kolei zasiadł za stołkiem perkusyjnym, a na stanowisko basisty zawitał tu całkowicie nowy Philippe la Grassa) oraz zdecydowali się na wydanie w 1998 roku mniejszego krążka, czyli właśnie epki "Seven".

Z grubsza, powstała im tu..."Psychostasia" w pigułce! Rzecz jasna, nic w tym złego. Ten ponad 18-minutowy materiał jest na tyle zwięzły i intrygujący, że miłośnicy debiutu z miejsca docenią format takiego wydawnictwa. Ponownie dominują więc ciężkie, zamulone riffy, szeptany growl, mieszanie między prostszymi a bardziej zawiłymi rytmami, nieprzyjazny klimat czy pokręcone solówki, choć feeling tych elementów - co ciekawe - nie jest w stylu 1:1 z "jedynki". W "The Sleep Of Ishtar" i "Seven" chociażby czuć delikatną chęć wpuszczenia powietrza i - co logiczne - dodania nieco lżejszej atmosfery, natomiast w "Captured In Eternal Lost" (swoją drogą, to nowa wersja "Ancestral Souls" z demówki "Grip Of Darkness") coś odwrotnego - zbrutalizowanie. W obu przypadkach jednak jest to bardzo przekonujące i wykonane z głową, a i całość może poszczycić się bardziej selektywnym brzmieniem. Na koniec dostajemy jeszcze dwa unikatowe live'y z 1997 roku, pod postacią utworów "As The Gods Succumbed" i "Across The Grey Waters", dzięki którym można w prawie pełnej okazałości poznać, jak zespół sobie radził na żywo. Rarytas to tym większy, że sama kapela w przeciągu całej swojej kariery zagrała...dosłownie parę koncertów!

Zawartość tego mini-wydawnictwa jawi się zatem jako wyśmienite uzupełnienie dla głównego materiału z "Psychostasii", na którym - mimo że jest pewien niedosyt - uniknięto nachalnego wyciskania hajsu z fanów niewielkim nakładem pracy. Na "Seven" znalazły się bowiem trudno dostępne live'y, remake utworu z demówki oraz premierowe, i niepowtórzone później!, kompozycje.

The fact that Jarkko Rantanen's band has never been one of the lucky ones, I will not divulge here too much; I suppose it would make a separate post for this. I will just mention that "Psychostasia" - although brilliant in its entirety - did not receive too enthusiastic reception (and it deserved it) and was quickly lost in the underground, as 1996 was not one of the most gracious for death metal releases. The Finns from Loimaa, however, were not discouraged. Immediately after their debut, they decided to slightly change the line-up (Jarkko again jumped to the position of guitarist/vocalist, Seppo Taatila, in turn, took a drums side, and a completely new Philippe la Grassa appeared here as a bassist) and decided to release in 1998 a smaller album, i.e. the ep "Seven". 

Roughly, they recorded here..."Psychostasia" in a nutshell! Of course, there is nothing wrong with that. This over 18-minute-long material is so concise and intriguing that fans of the debut will immediately appreciate the format of such a release. Again, heavy, muddy riffs, whispered growls, mixing between simpler and more intricate rhythms, unfriendly atmosphere or twisted solos dominate again, although the feeling of these elements - interestingly - is not in the 1:1 style of the "Psychostasia". In "The Sleep Of Ishtar" and "Seven" you can even feel a delicate desire to let air in music and - logically - add a slightly lighter atmosphere, while in "Captured In Eternal Lost" (by the way, this is a new version of "Ancestral Souls" from the demo "Grip Of Darkness") the opposite - brutalization. In both cases, however, it's very convincing and performed wisely, and the whole cd can boast a more selective sound. At the end we get two unique live's from 1997, in the form of songs "As The Gods Succumbed" and "Across The Gray Waters", by which you can hear in almost full splendor how the band was doing live. The rarity is even greater as the band itself has played...literally a few concerts throughout its career! 

The content of this mini-release appears to be an excellent supplement to the main material from "Psychostasia", which - despite the fact that there is a certain insufficiency - avoided the intrusive exploitation of money from the fans. On "Seven" there are hard-to-reach live tracks, a remake of a song from a demo and premiere, and not repeated later!, songs.
