Appalling Spawn - "Freedom, Hope & Fury (The Second Spawn)" (1998)
Śmiem stwierdzić, że Czesi to jedni z największych popierdoleńców jeśli chodzi o ekstremalny metal. Niewiele innych państewek potrafiło bowiem zestawić ze sobą tyle skrajności i zamknąć to wszystko w ramach ultra-brutalnego grania. Dowodem chociażby Appalling Spawn (przedsmak genialnego Lykathea Aflame) założony w 1995 roku przez Petra Tománka (gitara/wokal), Ondrę Martínka (druga gitara) oraz Gabriela Pavlika (perkusja), którzy postanowili zanurzyć się w progresywny brutal death metal z wpływami grindcore. Prawda że uroczo? Okej, nie były to najlepsze czasy na takie ekstrawaganckie połączenia (a zaryzykowałbym stwierdzenie, że świat wręcz nie był gotowy), ale Czesi już po obiecującej demówce "Bestial, Mystical & Spiritual (The First Spawn)" z 1996 roku, 2 lata później nie zrazili się do tak egzotycznych mieszanek (to chyba najlepsze określenie w ich kontekście). W 1998 roku, już z basistą Andym Mareshem, uderzyli bowiem z jeszcze konkretniejszym wydawnictwem, tj. "Freedom, Hope & Fury (The Second Spawn)" - oficjalnym debiutem.
Jedyny album Appalling Spawn to kawał bardzo nietypowej i wymykającej się zwyczajnym klasyfikacjom muzyki. Na "Freedom, Hope & Fury (The Second Spawn)" bowiem skrajność goni skrajność, a jednocześnie, nie ma mowy tu o jakiejkolwiek młodzieńczej naiwności. Ba, wszystkie te kontrowersyjne elementy (o czym za chwilę) zgrabniutko scaliły się w jedną, sensowną całość. Obok więc wybuchowych partii (na czele z intensywnym blastowaniem), grindowego bulgotu oraz brutal death metalowego ciężaru, pojawiają się tu takie dziwactwa jak partie gitar na czysto, deklamacje, orientalne/skoczniejsze melodie, bas wyrastający ponad resztę oraz melodyjne solówki. Myliłby się jednak ten, kto uznałby taki miks za niestrawny i nieprzystający do brutal death metalowych ram. Czesi mieli nosa do takich odpałów i - jak na ironię - potrafili podać to ze smakiem, tak, by było brutalnie i z odpowiednim wygarem, a jednocześnie, niebanalnie i z intrygującym, uduchowionym klimatem. Wystarczy rzucić tytułami pokroju "Celestian", "My Heaven", "By Sword & Heart" czy "Manthra Of Hope", a już one wystarczająco oddadzą unikalność tej muzyki. Zastrzeżenia wobec "Freedom..." nasuwają się za to tylko dwa, w dodatku małego kalibru. Do odstrzału są tu: przerywnik "Azure Waters Of Inthera" (niepotrzebne plumkanie) i niektóre zaciągane wokale (które nie wyszły tak dobrze jak u Lykathea Aflame). Poza tym, taką wizją brutal death metalu można rozkoszować się godzinami!
Widać zatem, że "Freedom, Hope & Fury (The Second Spawn)" to niesłusznie, trochę pominięta płyta. Już za jej sprawą można się przekonać o talencie kompozytorskim Petra Tománka i tego, że możliwym jest sensownie połączyć wiele, teoretycznie, nieprzystających do siebie stylistyk. Co ciekawe, na tym nie zakończyła się ewolucja Appalling Spawn. Wprawdzie sam zespół zakończył działalność błyskawicznie, bo w 1999 roku, ale jeszcze w tym samym czasie Czesi postanowili się przebranżowić na Lykathea Aflame - grupę, która popłynęła z tym stylem znacznie dalej. Z tym, że to już temat na osobną historię.

I dare say that the Czechs are one of the biggest madmans when it comes to topic about insane extreme metal mixes. Well, few other countries were able to combine so many extremes and close it all within ultra-brutal style. Proof of this is Appalling Spawn (a foretaste of the brilliant Lykathea Aflame) founded in 1995 by Petr Tománek (guitars/vocals), Ondra Martínek (guitars) and Gabriel Pavlik (drums), who decided to immerse themselves in progressive brutal death metal with grindcore influences. Isn't it lovely? Okay, these were not the best times for such extravagant pairings (and I would venture to say that the world was not ready), but the Czechs after the promising demo "Bestial, Mystical & Spiritual (The First Spawn)" from 1996, 2 years later they were not alienated from such exotic mixes (this is probably the best term in their context). In 1998, already with bassist Andy Maresh, they hit with an even more concrete release, i.e. "Freedom, Hope & Fury (The Second Spawn)" - an official debut.
This album is a piece of very unusual music that defies ordinary classifications. On "Freedom, Hope & Fury (The Second Spawn)" extremes chase extremes, and at the same time, there is no youthful naivety. In fact, all these controversial elements (more on that in a moment) neatly merged into one sensible whole. So, apart from explosive parts (headed by intense blasting), grind gurgling and brutal death metal heaviness, there are such surprises as clean guitar parts, declamations, oriental/bouncy melodies, meaningful bass and melodic solos. However, those who would consider such a mix indigestible and incompatible with brutal death metal standards would be wrong. These Czechs had a huge knowledge for such concept and - ironically - they served it with taste, so that it was brutal and with the right heaviness, and at the same time, original and with an intriguing, spiritual atmosphere. Just listen to the "Celestian", "My Heaven", "By Sword & Heart" or "Manthra Of Hope", they will sufficiently reflect the uniqueness of this music. There are only two objections to "Freedom...", and they are of a small meaning. To throw away there are: the "Azure Waters Of Inthera" interlude (with unneeded ambient) and some folkish vocals (which didn't come out as well as on Lykathea Aflame). Besides, such a vision of brutal death metal can be enjoyed for hours!
So you can see that "Freedom, Hope & Fury (The Second Spawn)" is wrongly, a bit omitted album. By this release, you can hear the compositional talent of Petr Tománek and the fact that it's possible to meaningfully combine many, theoretically, incompatible styles. Interestingly, the evolution of Appalling Spawn did not end there. Although the band itself ended its activity in 1999, but at the same time the Czechs decided to rebrand themselves as Lykathea Aflame - a group that went much further with this style. But well, that's a topic for a separate story.
