Desolation Realm - "Desolation Realm" (2018)

Wyobrażacie sobie sytuację, że Timeghoul zdołał nagrać więcej demówek? - bo kwestia pełnoprawnego debiutu zakrawa w tym momencie na coś nierealnego. Albo bardziej precyzując (i spoilerując), jak brzmiałoby coś pomiędzy "Tumultuous Travelings" a "Panaramic Twilight"? Z bardzo konkretną odpowiedzią przychodzi norweski Desolation Realm, którego skład w zasadzie nie sugerował aż tak wszechstronnych perspektyw (co oczywiście nie umniejsza ich dorobku w innych kapelach). Otóż, członkowie Lobotomized, Abominat i Brainschock za sprawą swojej debiutanckiej epki "Desolation Realm" pokazali, że da się przenieść magię nagrań Timeghoul we współcześniejsze realia.

Norwegowie z Desolation Realm po prostu doskonale zrozumieli fenomen kapeli Jeffa Haydena. Udało im się na tym stosunkowo krótkim mini-wydawnictwie (bo całość trwa raptem 21 minut) stworzyć autorskie kawałki w oparciu o patenty Timeghoul, ale bez usilnego zapatrywania się na pomysłowość Amerykanów czy totalnego braku rozszerzania tej formuły. Nie jest to wprawdzie tak zakręcona i sięgająca nieznanych rozwiązań muzyka jak "Panaramic Twilight", aczkolwiek...pod względem zróżnicowania i budowania apokaliptycznej atmosfery, "Desolation..." i tak depcze jej po piętach! Poziom brutalności niekiedy przewyższa materiał wyjściowy (w czym przodują liczne fragmenty z blastowaniem w "Crypts Of Decay" i "Desolation Realm"), zdarzają się dość nietuzinkowe rozwiązania (jak np. wisielczo brzmiące pianino w "Sepulchral Nucleus"), a z kolei wolniejsze, doom metalowe tempa przemieszane z melodyką nasuwającą klimat filmów s-f z miejsca powodują ciarki na całym ciele! Ba, Norwegom nawet nieczytelna produkcja w duchu Timeghoul wyszła wybornie. Sound ma odpowiedni ciężar i moc, wokale (bo są dwa rodzaje - oba udane) nie giną w natłoku dźwięków; no i co najważniejsze, zespół w całej tej oldschoolowości nie poleciał zbyt daleko. O żadnej, marnej imitacji w końcu nie ma tu mowy.

Wszyscy ubóstwiający klimaty Timeghoul (i Blood Incantation), bez wahania powinni więc sięgnąć po debiutanckie ep norweskiego Desolation Realm. To death metal, który wyróżnia się unikalnym, kosmicznym klimatem i bardzo przemyślanymi aranżacjami, a jednocześnie styl, któremu nie brakuje pierdolnięcia i młodzieńczej werwy. Właściwie, jest tu wszystko za co można kochać Timeghoul, a przy tym, za cholerę nie da się tego podciągnąć pod jakąkolwiek zrzynkę.

Can you imagine if Timeghoul recorded more demos? - because the issue of a full-length debut seems to be something unreal at this point. Or to be more precise, what would something between "Tumultuous Travelings" and "Panaramic Twilight" sound like? The Norwegian Desolation Realm comes with a very concrete answer, whose line-up basically did not suggest such versatile perspectives (which of course does not diminish their music in other bands). Well, the members of Lobotomized, Abominat and Brainschock, by their debut ep "Desolation Realm", showed that it's possible to transfer the magic of Timeghoul recordings into modern reality.

The Norwegians from Desolation Realm just perfectly understood the phenomenon of Jeff Hayden's band. On this relatively short mini-release (because the whole thing lasts only 21 minutes), they managed to create original songs based on Timeghoul's patents, but without insisting on the ingenuity of Americans or a total lack of expanding this formula. Admittedly, it's not as crazy and reaching unknown solutions music as "Panaramic Twilight", although...in terms of diversity and building an apocalyptic atmosphere, "Desolation..." is still really devastating! The level of brutality sometimes surpasses the original material (with numerous blasting fragments in "Crypts Of Decay" and "Desolation Realm"), there are quite unusual solutions (such as the hangman-sounding piano in "Sepulchral Nucleus"), and slower, doom metal tempos mixed with melodics evoking the atmosphere of sci-fi movies immediately give shudders all over the body! Even the illegible production in the spirit of Timeghoul came out great. The sound has the right heaviness and power, the vocals (because there are two types - both successful) are not lost in the multitude of sounds; and most importantly, the band didn't go too far in all that old school stuff. After all, there is no question of any poor imitation.

All those who love the atmosphere of Timeghoul (and Blood Incantation) should therefore listen to the debut ep of the Norwegian Desolation Realm. It's death metal, which stands out with its unique, cosmic atmosphere and very thoughtful arrangements, and at the same time the style, which is full of brutality and youthful verve. In fact, there's everything to love about Timeghoul here, and at the same time, it's not a typical tribute to these Americans.
