Gorephilia - "Embodiment Of Death" (2012)

Fiński death metal, ten w najciekawszej odmianie, zwykle kojarzy się z podziemnym zawirowaniem w typie Demilich oraz Adramelech, a także plugastwem i brzydotą Rippikoulu oraz (wczesnego) Convulse. Tymczasem, lata później zaczęło to już trochę inaczej wyglądać, np. wyłoniły się tam liczne kopie Incantation i - co ciekawe - takie podejście dość przychylnie odbierano. Trochę innym przypadkiem jest Gorephilia, która niby żadnej Ameryki (sic!) nie odkrywa, aczkolwiek niewiele ma wspólnego z ww. zawijasami czy gruzami. Tych pięciu Finów z Vantaay obrało sobie za cel dosyć wyraźne...worshipowanie Morbid Angel. W teorii, to również nie brzmi zbyt intrygująco, tyle że w praktyce, czyli wraz z ukazaniem się ich debiutanckiego "Embodiment Of Death" w 2012 roku, słychać było u nich spory potencjał i dobry start na coś więcej.

Tak więc, Finowie pokaźnie czerpią z dorobku kapeli Treya Azagthotha (maksymalnie do czasów "Covenant"), co słychać po piłowanym sposobie grania riffów, całkiem finezyjnych solówkach z tappingami i wajchą, ale też częstym, dość intensywnym blastowaniu. Nieco dalsze składowe zespołu są...niestety już dużo bardziej typowe. I nie chodzi mi, że dla ich sceny. Nie, nie. Mam na myśli, że są bardzo typowe z ogólnego punktu widzenia na death metal. W głównej mierze, "Embodiment Of Death" po prostu prezentuje barrrrdzo zwyczajowe granie ekstremy. Takie, które zrobi jedynie największe wrażenie na kimś, kto dopiero zaczyna swoją przygodę z tego typu tematami lub, po drugiej stronie barykady, słuchaczami zamkniętymi na jakkolwiek odczuwalną oryginalność. 

"Embodiment Of Death" nie jest oczywiście złe, to kawał przyzwoitego death metalu, który fajnie wykorzystuje szybkie tempa, riffy z tremolo, brzmi naturalnie, ma charczące, kompletnie nieczytelne wokale, a także z rozsądkiem dorzuca do blastowania wolniejsze patenty. Sęk jednak w tym, że ta muzyka to porcja grania tak na jeden/dwa razy, w której trudno znaleźć jakiś większy haczyk. Świecą przykładem chociażby "Gods Stand Aghast", "Saints Without Souls", "Pantheon In Flames" i "Exist To Suffer" jako te najlepsze i najbardziej bezlitosne numery w zestawieniu, które spełniają death metalowe wymogi i mają odpowiednią intensywność, ale jednocześnie co trochę bolesne, nie zostają w pamięci na długo, brzmią jednowymiarowo i brakuje im szaleństwa. Owszem, znajdziemy tu solidny oldschool i niezłe wyczucie co do morbidowych patentów, aleee w naprawdę wielu momentach czuć, że kapela mogłaby nieco więcej namieszać lub wyjść ponad utarte schematy.

Dlatego jeśli rajcuje Was do bólu tradycyjne spojrzenie na death metal, a wszelkie nieoczywistości określacie zdradą ideałów, debiut Gorephilii powinien z miejsca trafić w Wasz gust. "Embodiment Of Death" to kawał poprawnego death metalu w typie Morbid Angel, ale nie mającego zbytnio swojego rdzenia. Nieco ambitniej ci Finowie zaczęli wypadać już na następnych krążkach.

Finnish death metal, in its most interesting variety, is usually associated with underground non-obviousness such as Demilich and Adramelech, as well as the cadaverous ugliness of Rippikoulu and (early) Convulse. Meanwhile, years later it started to look a bit different, e.g. numerous copies of Incantation began to be created there and - interestingly - this approach was quite favorably received. A slightly different case is Gorephilia, which apparently does not discover any new horizons, although it has little in common with the above-mentioned bands. These five Finns from Vantaa have set their sights quite clearly on...worshipping Morbid Angel. In theory, it doesn't sound too intriguing, but in practice, i.e. with the release of their debut "Embodiment Of Death" in 2012, they showed great potential and a good start for something more.

So, the Finns get inspired of Trey Azagthoth's band (up to the times of "Covenant"), which can be heard in the distortion of playing riffs, quite subtle solos with tapping and whammy bar, but also frequent, quite intense blasting. The other components of the band are...unfortunately much more typical. And I don't mean for their scene. No, no. I mean, they're very typical from a death metal standpoint in general. Mainly, "Embodiment Of Death" simply presents extremely ordinary playing to the extreme music. One that will only make the greatest impression on someone who is just starting their adventure with this type of topics or, on the other side, listeners closed to any noticeable originality.

"Embodiment Of Death" is of course not bad, it's a decent piece of death metal that makes good use of fast tempos, tremolo riffs, sounds natural, has wheezing, completely unintelligible vocals, and wisely adds slower tempos to the blasting. The problem, however, that this music is only suitable for one or two listens, in which it's difficult to find any major point. Examples include "Gods Stand Aghast", "Saints Without Souls", "Pantheon In Flames" and "Exist To Suffer" as the best and most ruthless songs in the set that have the appropriate intensity, but at the same time, they do not stay in the memory for long, sound one-dimensional and lack madness. Yes, there is solid old-school music here and a good sense of Morbid Angel patterns, but there are many moments where you feel that the band could have mixed things up a bit more or gone beyond the usual patterns.

Therefore, if you are passionate about the traditional approach to death metal, and you call any non-obviousness a betrayal of ideals, Gorephilia's debut should immediately satisfy you. "Embodiment Of Death" is a piece of proper death metal in the Morbid Angel type, but without much of its own core. These Finns started to be a bit more ambitious on their next albums.
