Vader - "Black To The Blind" (1997)

Czy to się komuś podoba czy nie, Vader wraz z wydaniem "De Profundis" podołał presji związanej z przebiciem debiutu oraz przetrwał pomimo spadku do bardziej podziemnych wydawców. Ta druga kwestia jest szczególnie ciekawa, bo zespół bez pomocy Earache Records budował większe grono fanów i grał jeszcze więcej koncertów niż będąc w ich katalogu. Olsztynianie po petardzie z głębin nie zamierzali poprzestawać i poza intensywnym koncertowaniem narzucili sobie równie morderczy tryb wydawniczy, który - z początku - sprawdzał się, a nazwa Vadera sukcesywnie rozprzestrzeniała się po kolejnych zakątkach świata. Rok po "De Profundis" ukazał się coverowy °Future Of The Past° (fajna ciekawostka), a w 1997 roku, uzupełniony o Shambo i Mausera w składzie koncertowym, trzeci pełniak z premierową muzyką - "Black To The Blind". Po takim albumie jak "De Profundis", nietrudno było więc przypuszczać, że Peterowi z resztą ekipy wena dopisywała ponad normę.

I to słychać, ale... niekoniecznie jeśli chodzi o brzmienie omawianej płyty. To nie tak, żeby Vader wypuścił niedoróbkę czy rzecz nie do przyswojenia, aczkolwiek mamy tu do czynienia z sytuacją, gdzie świetną muzykę położyło niezbyt okazałe brzmienie - taki nasz odpowiednik pechowych albumów Suffocation ("Breeding The Spawn") i Malevolent Creation ("Stillborn"). Od czasu drugiego albumu, zespół oczywiście się rozwinął. Ogromne wrażenie robi sposób aranżacji i gra Docenta - jest jeszcze brutalniej i bardziej finezyjnie niż poprzednio, a znaczną większość perkusistów może on wprawiać w kompleksy. Na kolejny level wdrapał się również Peter, który imponuje talentem do pisania zwięzłych, death metalowych hiciorów i zwiększenia ich ilości względem poprzedniej płyty. Ponadto, w jego riffach i solówkach znalazło się zaskakująco więcej nośnego feelingu oraz melodii, natomiast wokale Piotra są jeszcze czytelniejsze, ale bardziej siłowe - maniera bywa specyficzna, ale pasuje do morbidowania i gęstej jazdy z blastami.

Utwory pokroju "True Names", tytułowego, "The Red Passage", "Carnal", "Beast Raping" czy "Distant Dream" prezentują kawał wyśmienitego death metalu, czaderskiego, obfitego w blasty, zapadającego w pamięć i mającego również trochę z thrash metalowego feelingu. Z grubsza, wszystko czym przecież zachwycał "De Profundis". Wszystko, niestety, poza nadmienianym brzmieniem. I ja wiem, że produkcja poprzednika miała swoje mankamenty, aczkolwiek na "Black To The Blind" minusów z brzmienia nie udało się przełożyć na coś swojego, unikalnego. Trzeci longplay Vadera wysuwa największe wady Selani, tj. brak mięcha w gitarach i głuchy sound werbla, a to dość mocno odbiera radochę z czerpania pełni radochy z tej płyty.

Zbierając te wnioski do kupy, "Black To The Blind" to album, który zawiera bardzo dobrą muzykę z nieoszlifowanym brzmieniem. Po jednej stronie, zespół ulepszył swój rozpoznawalny styl i stworzył szereg porywających utworów, po drugiej, poszedł w zbyt surowy sound, który zaniechał wcześniejszej czytelności (tym bardziej, że dużo się dzieje na płycie). Oczywiście, nadal jest to niezwykle wysoki poziom i po "Black..." czuć pasję płynącą z muzyki, aczkolwiek kwestia produkcji grupie zdecydowanie wymknęła się z pod kontroli. Tyle dobrego, że nie rozwaliło to wewnętrznej spójności albumu i nie odebrało całkowitej mocy.

°Future Of The Past° to - jak wspominałem - płyta coverowa z 1996 roku. Na jej repertuar, poza "Black Sabbath" znanym z epki "Sothis", składają się przeróbki Sodom, Kreator, Terrorizer, Possessed, Dark Angel, Celtic Frost, Slayer, Anti-Nowhere League oraz... Depeche Mode. Wszystkie z coverów są bardzo udane i zvaderowane, a w paru przypadkach świetnie obrazują one, że gusta Petera i Docena były dość zróżnicowane.

Whether anyone likes it or not, Vader, with the release of "De Profundis", surpassed their debut and survived despite being relegated to more underground labels. The latter is particularly interesting, as the band, without the help of Earache Records, built a larger fan base and played even more shows than they had with their catalog. After the explosion from "De Profundis", the Olsztyn band had no intention of stopping, and in addition to intense touring, they imposed an equally aggressive release regime, which early proved successful, and the Vader name gradually spread across the globe. A year after "De Profundis", the cover album entitled °Future Of The Past° was released (a cool addition to main discography), and in 1997, with Shambo and Mauser joining the live line-up, a third full-length album featuring new music - "Black To The Blind". After an album like "De Profundis", it was easy to assume that Peter and the rest of the band were feeling more than their fair share of inspiration.

And you can hear it, but... not necessarily in terms of the production of this album. It's not like Vader released a flawed or unpalatable release here, although we're dealing with a situation where great music was marred by a rather lackluster sound - a Polish equivalent of the ill-fated albums like Suffocation's ("Breeding The Spawn") and Malevolent Creation's ("Stillborn"). The band has certainly developed since their second album. Docent's arrangement and playing are incredibly impressive - it's even more brutal and refined than before, and he can give most drummers a complex. Peter has also reached another level, impressing with his talent for writing concise death metal hits and increasing their number compared to the previous album. Moreover, his riffs and solos contain surprisingly more resonant feeling and melody, while Piotr's vocals are even clearer, but more forceful - the mannerisms are sometimes strange, but they fit the morbidish style of death metal and playing with dense blast beats.

Songs like "True Names", the title track, "The Red Passage", "Carnal", "Beast Raping" and "Distant Dream" present a piece of exquisite death metal: explosive, memorable, with a lot of blasts and with a touch of thrash metal feeling. Basically, everything that "De Profundis" captivated. Everything, unfortunately, except the mentioned sound. I know the production on its predecessor had its flaws, but "Black To The Blind" doesn't manage to take its sound shortcomings into something unique. Vader's third album shows Selani Studio's biggest flaws - the lack of heaviness in the guitars and the dull sound of the snare drum, which quite significantly detracts from the enjoyment of this album.

Taking these conclusions together, "Black To The Blind" is an album that contains very good music with an unpolished sound. On the one hand, the band refined their recognizable style and created a number of captivating songs, on the other, they opted for an overly raw sound that abandoned its earlier clarity (especially since there's a lot going on on this album). Of course, it's still an incredibly high level of death metal and you can feel here the passion flowing from the music, although the band's production definitely got out of hand. The good thing is that it didn't destroy the album's internal cohesion or take away the power.

°Future Of The Past° is - as I mentioned - a cover album from 1996. Its repertoire, besides "Black Sabbath" known from the "Sothis" ep, includes covers of Sodom, Kreator, Terrorizer, Possessed, Dark Angel, Celtic Frost, Slayer, Anti-Nowhere League, and... Depeche Mode. All of the covers are very successful and vaderish, and in a few cases, they perfectly illustrate that Peter and Docen's tastes were quite diverse.
