Benediction - "Grind Bastard" (1998)

Uproszczone logo, dziwaczna okładka...po czymś takim można było przypuszczać, że na "Grind Bastard" kwintet z Benediction zmieni drastycznie styl. I takiego wała!, bo jak się szybko okazuje, grupa zdecydowała się...pozostać tam gdzie była wówczas w 1995 roku, nie oferując praktycznie niczego co mogłoby jakkolwiek zaskakiwać. No dobra, muzyka niby jest troszkę lepsza niż na "The Dreams You Dread" i ogólnie ma trochę inny feeling (bardziej grooviasty). Tyle, że co z tego, kiedy na tle klasyków nadal wypada to mocno przeciętnie i kompletnie nie potrafi wciągnąć na dłużej. Czuć za to, że krążek ten - podobnie jak poprzednik - powstał wyłącznie z wydawniczego obowiązku.

Żeby nie było, są jakieś tam pozostałości deathowego riffowania ("Magnificat", "The Bodiless"), jakieś przyspieszenia ("We The Freed", "Nervebomb", "Deadfall") czy niezłe wokale Ingrama (za wyjątkiem tych gdzie próbuje bardziej na czysto), problem w tym, że tego wszystkiego co wymieniłem "in plus" jest tutaj jak na lekarstwo. Niestety, to tylko fragmenty, a nie pełna zawartość. Muzyka wprawdzie trzyma na "Grind Bastard" w miarę solidny poziom i nadaje się do słuchania (w przeciwieństwie do następnej płyty), niestety absolutnie nie ma ona tego kopa jak longplaye sprzed "The Dreams You Dread". 

Myślę też, że dużo lepszym rozwiązaniem byłoby nieco skrócić ilość kawałków (tak do 8-9), bo przy aż 11-u (wśród których znalazły się niepotrzebne dwa covery) zdecydowanie trudniej idzie się wsłuchać w całość, tym bardziej, że jak wspominałem nie jest za ciekawie i momentami materiał przynudza. Całościowo niby jest więc odrobinę lepiej niż na "The Dreams You Dread", choć paradoksalnie do tego o czym tu mówiłem, "Grind Bastard" to dokładnie ta sama historia co "czwórka", materiał bardzo przeciętny jak na zasłużoną kapelę i raczej taki, do którego średnio się wraca.

Simplified logo, bizarre cover...after something like this, someone could assume that on "Grind Bastard" the quintet from Benediction would change the style drastically. Not this time, because as it turns out, the group decided to...stay where it was then in 1995, offering nothing that could be surprising. Okay, the music is kind of a little better than on "The Dreams You Dread" and generally has a different feeling (more groovy). But that's nothing if it's still very average compared to the classics and it's completely impossible to pull in for longer. But you can feel that this disc - like its predecessor - was made solely from publishing duty. 

Admittedly, there are some remnants of death metal riffs ("Magnificat", "The Bodiless"), some accelerations ("We The Freed", "Nervebomb", "Deadfall") or good vocals of Ingram (except for those where he tries to sing more clean), the problem is that everything that I mentioned "in plus" is definitely not enough here. Unfortunately, these are just moments, not the full songs. The music on "Grind Bastard" holds a fairly solid level and is suitable for listening (as opposed to the next album), but has absolutely no such kick as the pre-"The Dreams You Dread" albums. 

I also think that a much better solution would be to shorten the number of songs a bit (to 8-9), because with 11 (including unnecessary two covers) it is much more difficult to listen to the whole cd. Overall, it is a bit better than on "The Dreams You Dread", although paradoxically to what I was talking about, "Grind Bastard" is exactly the same story as "The Dreams...", it's very average longplay for a well-deserved band like Benediction.
