Benediction - "The Dreams You Dread" (1995)

Skoro "Transcend The Rubicon" był bardzo udaną kontynuacją "The Grand Leveller", "The Dreams You Dread" musi być zatem bardzo udaną kontynuacją "Transcend The Rubicon". Otóż...jednak nie. Na "czwórce", do muzyki Angoli niestety wkradło się zaskakująco sporo mielizn i zamulania. Oczywiście, jakiejś strasznej kaszany tu nie popełnili i całość generalnie wstydu kapeli nie przynosi, ale wyraźnie da się tutaj odczuć brak jakichś ciekawszych pomysłów na granie i ogólne zmęczenie dotychczasową formułą. 

Dobry jest tu początek albumu ("Down On Whores (Leave Them All For Dead)", "Certified...?", "Where Flies Are Born"), jako tako jeszcze daje radę końcówka (tytułowy) i od biedy niektóre kawałki ze środka ("Denial", "Path Of The Serpent"). We wszystkich z nich jednak panuje dosyć trudny do określenia nastrój, jakby grupa znudziła się death metalem, ale jednocześnie nie chciała zbytnio odchodzić od wypracowanego stylu. Riffy nie zabijają, solówek wyraźnie poskromiono, przeważają zazwyczaj zbyt jednostajne tempa (a jak już przyspieszą to bardziej na thrashowo) i sama muza nie utrzymuje uwagi jednakowo przez cały album. Wyszedł z tego death metal totalnie bez wyrazu, jakby został stworzony on wyłącznie na potrzeby kontraktu. 

Małe zastrzeżenie mam również do wokali Ingrama, bo to, że niedaleko im do Barneyowskich jest już wiadome przynajmniej od czasów "The Grand Leveller", ale w przypadku "The Dreams...", Dave aż za bardzo przybiera manierę frontmana Napalm Death - nieraz naprawdę można mieć wątpliwości czy do studia nie zawitał ponownie sam Barney. Heh, tak czy siak, grupa wyraźnie pogubiła się na tym krążku, tak jak wspominałem wyżej, trudno nie odnieść wrażenia jakby kwintet zmuszał się do tworzenia tej płyty, byleby już mieć ją za sobą. Muzyce na "The Dreams..." niestety brakuje życia, owszem, znalazło się na niej trochę niezłych kawałków, ale co z tego kiedy większości z nich brakuje pierdolnięcia. Z tego też względu, mimo że nie jest to złe wydawnictwo, do "The Dreams You Dread" ogólnie wracam bardzo rzadko.

Since "Transcend The Rubicon" was a very successful sequel to "The Grand Leveller", "The Dreams You Dread" must therefore be a very successful sequel to "Transcend The Rubicon". Well...no. On "The Dreams...", Benediction's music unfortunately got a lot of boredom. Of course, they did not commit any terrible groats here and the whole band does not bring shame, but you can clearly feel the lack of any more interesting ideas for playing and general fatigue with the current formula. 

The beginning of the album is good here ("Down On Whores (Leave Them All For Dead)", "Certified...?", "Where Flies Are Born"), as well as the ending (title song) and some tracks middle ("Denial", "Path Of The Serpent"). In all of them, however, the atmosphere is quite difficult to define, as if the group got bored with death metal, but at the same time did not want to deviate too much from the developed style. The riffs are not killing, the solos are clearly tamed, the paces are usually too uniform (and when they accelerate they are more thrashy) and the music itself does not maintain the attention equally throughout the album. Death metal came out completely blank here, as if it had been created exclusively on request.

I also have a small reservation about Ingram's vocals, because the fact that they are not far from Barney has been known at least since the times of "The Grand Leveller", but in the case of "The Dreams...", Dave takes the manner of Napalm Death's frontman too much - sometimes you can really doubt whether Barney himself has returned to the studio. Anyway, the group is clearly lost on this album, as I mentioned above, it's hard not to get the impression that the quintet is forcing itself to create this album, if only to have it behind them. The music on "The Dreams..." unfortunately lacks life, obviously, there are some nice songs on it, but what about when most of them are missing power. For this reason, even though it's not a bad release, I generally rarely return to "The Dreams You Dread".
