Marduk - "La Grande Danse Macabre" (2001)

Mnie to chyba ciężko dogodzić. Marduk przyspiesza - źle (wyjątek: "Panzer Division Marduk"), Marduk zwalnia - też źle. No dobra, sytuacja w przypadku "La Grande Danse Macabre" nie wygląda w ten sposób, że Szwedzi nagle wyzbyli się blastowania oraz że wzięło ich na poszerzanie grona odbiorców - i żeby niby stąd moje wielkie oburzenie. Otóż nie, zdecydowali się...po prostu przemieszać tempa i pozostać przy dobrze już znanych rozwiązaniach! Wiadomo, Marduk nigdy nie wprowadzał jakichś radykalnych czy niezwykle kontrowersyjnych zmian do swojej muzyki - od zawsze byli dość konsekwentną ekipą w black metalu. Problem tkwi jednak w tym, że nawet przy takiej skromnej ilości nowości, zdarzały im się lepsze płyty. Sam jak słucham tego krążka, nasuwają mi się dwa wnioski: wydali to po to, by pokazać poziom "Panzer..." (słabszymi płytami pomiędzy...), wersja numer dwa, nacisk wydawcy/pretekst do kolejnej trasy. Cóż, skłaniałbym się jednak ku tej drugiej opcji...

Nie bardzo jest się więc o czym rozpisywać. Pomimo mocno odmiennej oprawy graficznej na tle większości ich płyt, "La Grande..." oferuje standardowy dla Marduk black metal, taki mocno w typie "Nightwing" i...raczej wyłącznie dla fanów odgrzewanych kotletów. Oczywiście o tragedii nie ma mowy, album nie przynosi zespołowi wstydu i jakiś tam poziom utrzymuje. Problem w tym, że całość jest tak przewidywalna i mało ekscytująca, że właściwie mógłbym treść recki zamknąć w paru prostych zdaniach i tyle by w zupełności wystarczyło za "wyczerpującą opinię". No nie tym razem, bo zastrzeżeń mam jednak na tyle dużo, że na przekór rozpiszę się bardziej niż planowałem hehe. 

Muzycy zatem przemieszali tempa, niektóre z utworów wydłużyli, inne nieco odchudzili z blastów. Resztę natomiast pozostawili zupełnie po staremu, bez choćby jakichkolwiek prób zaskoczenia słuchacza (bo takie nowości to jednak nie nowości). Tak więc szybsze utwory pokroju "Obedience Unto Death", "Death Sex Ejaculation" lub "Azrael" nie zabijają poziomem ekstremy, z kolei (naj)wolniejsze w zestawieniu "Bounds Of Unholy Matrimony" oraz tytułowy męczą zbyt często powtarzanymi motywami, a co za tym idzie, dość mocno przynudzają (przekraczają aż 7 minut!). Jakby jeszcze było mało, zespół umieścił na początku płyty dwa instrumentale! Owszem, stanowią one poprawną klamrę dla "właściwego" utworu, ale nie są one czymś co podnosi poziom kawałka. Najciekawsza (i najlepsza) jest za to końcówka "La Grande..." i aż szkoda, że całość nie została utrzymana w takim klimacie. Trzy pozostałe kawałki (tj. "Funeral Bitch", "Summers End" oraz "Jesus Christ...Sodomized") pokazują, że jak zespół chce, to potrafi sensownie poblastować, dorzucić trochę zwolnień i "mroźnego" klimatu. No a czemu cała płyta tak nie wygląda, to już największa zagadka "La Grande Danse Macabre"!

Jak dla mnie, nie bez przyczyny longplay ten jest powszechnie dosyć pominiętym materiałem w dyskografii Marduk. Zarówno od strony ekstremy oraz tej klimatycznej brakuje mu sporo i trudno znaleźć na nim jakikolwiek kawałek, który byłby w stanie się jakoś wybijać, by z chęcią wracać do tej płyty. Sam bym bardziej zalecał sprawdzenie poprzedniej/następnej.

I guess it's hard to please me. Marduk accelerates - bad (exception: "Panzer Division Marduk"), Marduk slows down - bad too. Okay, the situation in the case of "La Grande Danse Macabre" is not that the Swedes suddenly gave up blasting and that they took them to broaden the audience - and that's why my great indignation. Well, no, they decided to...just mix the paces and stick to the well-known patterns! It's known that Marduk has never introduced any radical or extremely controversial changes to their music - they have always been quite a consistent black metal band. The problem, however, is that even with such a modest amount of new products, better albums have happened to them. When I listen to this disc, two conclusions come to my mind: they released it to show the level of "Panzer..." (weaker albums between...), version number two, publisher's pressure/excuse for the next tour. Well, I would prefer the latter option... 

So there is not much to write about. Despite a very different graphic design compared to most of their albums, "La Grande..." offers standard for Marduk black metal, very "Nightwing" type and...rather exclusively for their die-hard fans. Of course, there is no question of a tragedy, the album does not bring shame to the band and it maintains some level. The problem is that the whole cd is so predictable and not very exciting that I could actually close the content of the review in a few simple sentences and that would be enough for an "exhaustive opinion". Well, not this time, because I have so many reservations that, in spite of this, I will write more than I planned hehe. 

So the musicians mixed the paces, lengthened some of the songs and slightly slimmed down some of the blasts. The rest was left as usual, without even trying to surprise the listener. So the faster songs like "Obedience Unto Death", "Death Sex Ejaculation" or "Azrael" do not kill with the extreme, while the (slowest) songs like "Bounds Of Unholy Matrimony" and the title track tire with too often repeated motifs, and what a therefore, they are quite boring (they exceed 7 minutes!). As if that wasn't enough, the band placed two instrumentals at the beginning of the album! Yes, they are the correct brace for the "right" track, but they are not something that elevates. The most interesting (and the best) is the ending of "La Grande..." and it's a pity that the whole thing was not kept in such a climate. The other three tracks (ie. "Funeral Bitch", "Summers End" and "Jesus Christ...Sodomized") show that if the band wants to, they can reasonably blast, add some slowdowns and "frosty" atmosphere. Well, why the whole album does not look like this is the biggest mystery of "La Grande Danse Macabre"! 

As for me, it's not without reason that this LP is a commonly omitted material in Marduk's discography. Both from the extreme and the atmospheric side, it lacks a lot and it's difficult to find any track on it that would be able to somehow break out and return to this album with pleasure. I would recommend checking the previous/next one more.
