Marduk - "Nightwing" (1998)

Właściwie, z "Nightwing" wszystko byłoby w porządku i byłby on może nawet wydawnictwem na miarę pierwszych trzech albumów tej szwedzkiej ekipy. Owszem, byłby. Gdyby tylko...odchudzić go z blastowania! Taak, wiem, że o tym rozwodziłem się już w recce o "Heaven Shall Burn...", ale kiedy ma się do czynienia z płytą, gdzie zespół powtórzył część błędów z poprzedniczki (tj. nawciskał blastów jak popadnie i znów bardzo chciał pokazać jaki to on nie jest trv), trudno, żeby nie wypomnieć tego już na samym początku opisywania swoich wstępnych wrażeń z takiego dzieła. Tym bardziej, że najsensowniejsze co ma zespół do zaoferowania pojawia się wraz z utworami od "Dreams Of Blood And Iron" do "Anno Domini 1476" - czyli generalnie od połowy krążka. Tymczasem, przez pierwsze 4 kawałki (pomijając intro), Szwedzi z Marduk męczą nudnymi schematami i dość zwyczajowym klimatem, nawet jak na swoje granie.

I o ile to drugie oczywiście jeszcze da się przeboleć, tak schematy we wspomnianych "Of Hells Fire", tytułowcu, "Bloodtide (XXX)" oraz "Slay The Nazarene" potrafią porządnie zniechęcić do całości płyty. Wydaje się jakby leciał w kółko jeden utwór, a przekładając to na nie-laikowe, jakby Szwedzi nie mieli zbytnio pomysłu na muzykę, więc na bazie paru podobnych patentów sklecili kolejne, nowe utwory. Jest to więc dokładnie ten sam problem co poprzednio, gitarowo i wokalnie bez zarzutu, tyle, że ogólnie dosyć przewidywalnie. Zespół w znacznej większości trzyma się podobnego tempa i nie rozwija muzyki ponad jeden-dwa motywy (a nawet jeśli do tego dochodzi - przedwcześnie wraca do poprzednich). Najgorsze w tym, że wielu może zwątpić zanim longplay bardziej się rozkręci. 

Bo dramatu ogólnie na "Nightwing" nie ma, wyraźnie słychać tutaj chęć pozostania wiernie przy swoim (co przecież ma swoich entuzjastów), znalazło się też sporo dobrej muzyki zahaczającej o klimaty samego "Opus...". Problem w tym, że przeważnie wszystko to powiela wyłącznie starsze, już dobrze znane patenty i nie wprowadza to absolutnie niczego nowego nawet w obrębie ich stylistyki. Da się tego oczywiście wydawnictwa (wy)słuchać, ba, tak jak wspominałem, rozwijające poprzednią formułę "Dracole Wayda" czy "Kaziklu Bey (The Lord Impaler)" mogą się podobać, są wyjątkowo nieźle zróżnicowane i - paradoksalnie do tego o czym mówiłem - mają swój klimat. Szkoda tylko, że cała płyta nie jest utrzymana na takim poziomie.

Póki co, można było wywnioskować z opisu powyżej, że "Nightwing" to coś na kształt gniota. Tak jednak nie jest, w przypadku Marduk mam po prostu dość chore preferencje. Otóż, jeśli któraś z ich płyt odstaje klimatem lub na siłę próbuje przewyższać brutalnością pierwsze trzy, z automatu przestaje mi się ona podobać. "Nightwing" nie jest tutaj wyjątkiem, wstydu zespołowi oczywiście nie przynosi, ale klimatem i pomysłowością nie dorównuje on klasykom. I to pomimo tego, że może poszczycić się większą brutalnością od nich.

Actually, with "Nightwing" everything would be fine and it might even be the release of the first three albums of this Swedish band. Yes, it would. If only...throw it away from blasting! Yeah, I know that I already talked about it in the review about "Heaven Shall Burn...", but when dealing with an album where the band repeated some of the mistakes from their predecessor (ie. they are still trv), it's difficult not to mention it at the very beginning of describing your initial impressions. The more that the most sensible what the band has to offer appears along with songs from "Dreams Of Blood And Iron" to "Anno Domini 1476" - that is generally from the middle of the album. Meanwhile, for the first 4 songs (except for the intro), the Swedes from Marduk are tired with boring patterns and quite a common atmosphere, even for their playing. 

And while the latter, of course, can still get over, the patterns in the aforementioned "Of Hells Fire", title track, "Bloodtide (XXX)" and "Slay The Nazarene" can discourage the whole album. It seems as if one song was flying over and over again, and translating it into non-laymen, as if the Swedes did not have much idea for music, so based on a few similar patents they put together new songs. So it's exactly the same problem as before, flawless guitars and vocals, but generally quite predictable. The vast majority of the band keeps a similar paces and does not develop the music beyond one or two themes (and even if it does - it returns prematurely to the previous ones). The worst part is that many may doubt before the lp gets even bigger. 

Because there is no tragedy on "Nightwing" in general, you can clearly hear the desire to remain faithful to his own (which, after all, has its enthusiasts), there is also a lot of good music touching on the atmosphere of "Opus..." itself. The problem is that mostly all of this is reproduced only by older, already well-known patents and it does not introduce anything new, even in terms of their stylistics. Of course, the releases (you) can listen to it, indeed, as I mentioned, the releases developing the previous formula "Dracole Wayda" or "Kaziklu Bey (The Lord Impaler)" may be liked, they are extremely diverse and - paradoxically to what I was talking about - they have their own atmosphere. It's a pity that the whole album is not kept at this level. 

So far, it could be deduced from the description above that "Nightwing" is something like a crap. However, this is not the case, in the case of Marduk I just have quite strange preferences. Well, if any of their albums stand out with its climate or try to outstrip the first three in terms of brutality, I don't like it automatically. "Nightwing" is no exception here, of course it does not bring any shame to the band, but it does not match the classics with its atmosphere and creativity. And this despite the fact that he can pride himself on being more brutal than them.
