Marduk - "Plague Angel" (2004)

Dobra passa u Marduk na początku nowego tysiąclecia nie trwała zbyt długo, ale - jak na ironię - zdołała przynieść kilka sensownych płyt w ich "wojennym" wydaniu. Pierwszą z nich była - moim zdaniem niesłusznie niedoceniona - "World Funeral", potem z kolei omawiania "Plague Angel", która zyskała już znacznie szersze zainteresowanie. No i z pewnością, jest to wynik godny pochwały! Zespół przeszedł między oba tymi albumami bardzo istotne zmiany w składzie, a samo ich wydanie dzieli zaledwie rok. Mając na uwadze dość wątpliwy poziom niektórych ich starszych płyt, mogła wyjść z tego przecież katastrofa! Na szczęście, tutaj stało się inaczej, a Szwedzi zadbali o muzykę w takim stopniu, by była jednakowo zróżnicowana i brutalna.

Nowy skład to nowa energia, nawet połowicznie. Po pierwsze, do zespołu powrócił stary znajomy z czasów "Dark Endless" oraz "Those Of The Unlight" czyli Devo (obejmując jednak bas, a nie gitarę jak kiedyś), po drugie - jeszcze ważniejsze - na wokale zawitał Mortuus z Funeral Mist (którego maniera śpiewu nie odbiega aż tak bardzo od tej Legiona), no i po trzecie - sama muzyka. Ta powstawała w wyjątkowo ekspresowym tempie, bo - jak domniemywam - już przy okazji poprzedniego krążka, tak więc z automatu jasnym jest, że "Plague Angel" do jakkolwiek zaskakujących nie należy. Z tego wynika jednak inna dobra rzecz - styl i poziom muzyki zostały utrzymane, coś z czego "pewnością" było wcześniej różnie. No właśnie, "Plague Angel" to przede wszystkim bardzo dobra kontynuacja "World Funeral", z jednej strony fajnie oparta o starsze i w większości znane patenty, z drugiej daleka od metody "kopiuj-wklej".

O zróżnicowanie w przypadku "Plague Angel" można być zatem spokojnym. Morgan z resztą kolegów poradzili sobie tutaj zarówno w szybszych kawałkach pokroju "Life's Emblem", "The Hangman Of Prague", "Everything Bleeds", wolniejszych w typie "Perish In Flames" oraz "Seven Angels, Seven Trumpets" czy nawet tam, gdzie pokusili się przemieszać tempa jak np. w "Blutrache" oraz "Throne Of Rats". No a że z takim "mixem" bywało bardzo różnie na niektórych ich poprzednich/następnych krążkach, wydaję mi się, że jest to zdecydowanie warte nadmienienia w kontekście głównych atutów płyty - tym bardziej jako nagrywanej w tak szybkim tempie. Kolejna rzecz, słucha się jej dosyć łatwo i bez jakkolwiek większych przeszkód. No a to już z kolei zasługa sporej ilości krótszych utworów i nierozwleczonych tych dłuższych. W końcówce za to zaskakuje "Deathmarch", mały odmieniec, niby-przerywnik, a w zasadzie wojenno-ambientowy utwór, jakiego na wcześniejszych płytach Marduk nie można było uświadczyć w takiej długości. No i jak zazwyczaj nie lubię takiego plumkania, tak tutaj to pasuje wręcz wzorcowo.

"Plague Angel" uchodzi w końcu za jedną z lepszych płyt Marduk nagraną z Mortuusem w składzie! Owszem, to nie ten sam poziom ekstremy co "Panzer..." czy - po przeciwnej stronie - klimatu a la "Those...", ale co z tego skoro muzyka nadal potrafi przykuć uwagę i - pomimo dość prostego stylu - nie brzmi bliźniaczo podobnie do innych ich płyt. Na tle - bardzo dobrego przecież - "World Funeral", jest to spora rekomendacja z mojej strony.

Marduk's streak at the beginning of the new millennium did not last too long, but - ironically - it managed to bring some sensible records in their "war" edition. The first was - in my opinion, unfairly underestimated - "World Funeral" and then the "Plague Angel", which gained much more attention. And it's certainly a commendable result! The band has undergone significant line-up changes between these two albums, and their release is only a year away. Given the rather questionable quality of some of their older albums, it could have been a disaster! Fortunately, it was different here, and the Swedes took care of the music to such an extent that it was equally diverse and brutal. 

The new line-up is new energy, even partially. Firstly, an old friend from the times of "Dark Endless" and "Those Of The Unlight" or Devo (including the bass, not the guitar as it used to be) returned to the band, and secondly - even more importantly - Mortuus came from Funeral Mist (whose the manner of singing does not differ that much from that of Legion), and thirdly - the music itself. This one was created at an extremely fast time, because - as I presume - already on the occasion of the previous album, so automatically it's clear that "Plague Angel" is not surprising though. From this, however, another good thing follows - the style and level of the music has been kept, something that was different before. Well, "Plague Angel" is, above all, a very good continuation of "World Funeral", on the one hand nicely based on older and mostly known patents, on the other hand far from the "copy-paste" method. 

One can therefore be calm about differentiation in the case of "Plague Angel". Morgan and the rest of his band managed here both in faster songs like "Life's Emblem", "The Hangman Of Prague", "Everything Bleeds", slower ones like "Perish In Flames" and "Seven Angels, Seven Trumpets" or even where they tried to mix the paces like in "Blutrache" and "Throne Of Rats". Well, with such a "mix" it was very different on some of their previous/next albums, I think it's definitely worth mentioning in the context of the main advantages of the album - especially as it was recorded at such a fast time. Another thing, it's quite easy to listen to and without any major obstacles. And this, in turn, is due to a large number of shorter songs and longer ones that are not stretched. At the end, however, we are surprised by "Deathmarch", a kind of interlude and basically a war-ambient track, which on Marduk's earlier albums could not be experienced in such length. And as I usually do not like such songs, it fits perfectly here. 

After all, "Plague Angel" is considered to be one of the best Marduk albums recorded with Mortuus in the line-up! Yes, this is not the same level of extremes as "Panzer..." or - on the opposite side - the climate a la "Those...", but what if the music can still attract attention and - despite the rather simple style - does not sound identical to their other albums. Against the background of - very good after all - "World Funeral", it's quite a good recommendation from me.
