Marduk - "Frontschwein" (2015)

Rzekłbym, że o takiego Marduka właśnie nic nie robiłem, no ale jednak nie tym razem. Po średniawce jaką był "Serpent Sermon", zespół zaserwował...kolejną średniawkę, ale z potencjałem na coś większego, czego poprzednim razem powiedzieć się zbytnio nie dało! Niestety, jak już to bywało na poprzednich krążkach, nie oznacza to z automatu, że Morgan i spółka w pełni wykorzystali owy potencjał lub że udało im się na "Frontschwein" przeskoczyć poprzeczkę względem "Serpent...". Zadatki jak najbardziej były, ale odnoszę wrażenie, że tym razem kapela nie do końca wiedziała jak to do końca uczynić.

Stąd też pojawia się pierwszy i w zasadzie najważniejszy problem jaki mam z "Frontschwein" - dużo chęci na zrobienie różnorodnego materiału, ale znacznie mniej wyobraźni na przełożenie tego w jednakowo mocny i porywający krążek. Same utwory są naprawdę przyzwoite (i podoba mi się, że zespół przeważnie przeplata album raz szybszym, a raz wolniejszym utworem), riffy Morgana zdają się w nich bardziej zapadać w pamięć niż te z "Serpent...", perka nie zanudza bez względu na tempo, Mortuus utrzymuje poziom wokali rodem z "Plague Angel". Wszystko zatem fajnie i nieco inaczej niż poprzednim razem, aleee powtarzalność motywów i - co za tym idzie - ich niezbyt wielka ilość potrafi przyprawiać o znużenie, nawet gdy dany fragment wybija się grubo ponad normę. Tyczy się to w szczególności tych wolniejszych utworów, gdzie poszczególny kawałek rozwija się zbyt długo ("503", "Wartheland") albo wcale ("Nebelwerfer", "The Blonde Beast"). Fajnie, że znaczna większość z nich skupia w sobie dość różne patenty (np. taneczny rytm w "The Blonde Beast") i stara się być odmieńcem na tle innych z płyty (chociaż chyba nie tylko), ale gorzej, że nie są one zbytnio rozbudowane ponad jeden-dwa motywy. Na tle tych szybszych wypadają nieźle, jednak czy lepiej...na to trudno wysnuć jednoznaczną odpowiedź! Zagwozdka polega na tym, że "Frontschwein" może poszczycić się całkiem dobrymi utworami, gdzie przeważają blasty! Wśród nich, warto nadmienić o "Thousand-Fold Death", "Rope Of Regret", tytułowym czy "Between The Wolf-Packs". Nie przynudzają, jest w nich solidne jebnięcie i spora dawka chwytliwości - wszystko czego zdałoby się po Marduk oczekiwać.

Sama w sobie płyta - podobnie jak poprzednia - niestety (albo i stety) również nie jest jakimś must have spośród nowszego dorobku Szwedów. "Frontschwein" to bowiem nic innego jak kolejny standardowy album dla Morgana i spółki, który utrzymany jest w dosyć zbliżonych brzmieniach do kilku ich poprzednich krążków, a wszelkie nowości serwuje słuchaczowi ostrożnie i bez wybiegania ponad wojenne klimaty. Czyli raczej nic porywającego na dłuższą metę, ale mającego ten atut, że nie irytuje schematami.

I would say that I didn't do anything about Marduk like that, but not this time. After the average "Serpent Sermon", the band served...another average cd, but with the potential for something bigger, which was impossible to say last time! Unfortunately, as it was the case with previous albums, it does not automatically mean that Morgan and the company fully used this potential or that they managed to overjump the level of "Frontschwein" in relation to "Serpent...". The potential was, but I have the impression that this time the band didn't quite know how to do a very interesting album. 

Hence the first and most important problem I have with "Frontschwein" - a lot of willingness to make various material, but much less imagination to record it into an equally strong and thrilling disc. The songs themselves are really decent (and I like that the band usually interweaves the album with a faster, sometimes slower track), Morgan's riffs seem to be more memorable than those from "Serpent...", the drums are not boring regardless on the tempo, Mortuus maintains a vocal level straight from "Plague Angel". So everything is nice and a bit different than the previous time, but the repetition of motifs and, consequently, their not too large number can make you weary, even when a given fragment stands out well above the norm. This is especially painful of the slower tracks where a single track takes too long ("503", "Wartheland") or not at all ("Nebelwerfer", "The Blonde Beast"). It's nice that the vast majority of them incorporate quite different patents (e.g. the dance rhythm in "The Blonde Beast") and try to be a different compared to the others on the album (but probably not only), but worse that they are not too elaborate over one or two themes. Against the background of the faster ones they do well, but is it better...it's really difficult to come up with an unambiguous answer! The problem is that "Frontschwein" can boast quite good songs, where blasts predominate! Among them, it's worth mentioning "Thousand-Fold Death", "Rope Of Regret", the title track or "Between The Wolf-Packs". They are not boring, there is a solid brutality and a good dose of catchiness - everything that one would expect from Marduk. 

The album itself - just like the previous one - unfortunately (or fortunately) is also not a must have among the newer cds of the Swedes. "Frontschwein" is nothing more than another standard album for Morgan and the company, which is kept in quite similar sounds to a few of their previous albums, and serves all news to the listener carefully and without going beyond the war atmosphere. So rather nothing thrilling, but having this advantage of not irritating with typical patterns.
