Immolation to właśnie dobry znak. Po znacznie lżejszym jak na nich
"Harnessing Ruin", kwartet zdecydował się powrócić na
"Shadows In The Light" do brutalności i ciężaru, a patenty odpowiadające za klimat i melodyke umieścić na troszkę dalszym planie - co pięknie pokazywała epka
"Hope And Horror" robiąca za przystawkę do omawianego longplaya.
"Shadows..." wraca więc do klimatów
"Unholy Cult", tyle, że wyraźnie ustępuje jej brutalnością oraz różni się brzmieniem (te jest bardziej selektywne). Niestety też, ponownie nie jest to materiał na maksymalną ocenę i nie tak przełomowy jak większość poprzednich albumów
Immolation, nawet na tle ich własnej dyskografii.
Ważne to specjalnie jednak nie jest, bo - paradoksalnie do tego - Immole także i tutaj mają sporo do zaoferowania i o samych utworach złego słowa powiedzieć się nie da. Brak im tylko tej dawki szaleństwa i chaosu ze starszych płyt. Tyle. Reszta składowej ich muzy już robi standardowo niemałe wrażenie. Kawałki są bardziej zwięzłe niż poprzednio, wszystkie zazwyczaj utrzymują czas trwania około 3-4 minut (wyjątkiem jawi się tu jedynie "Whispering Death"), od razu da się w nich wychwycić charakterystyczny dla Immolation styl, na czele z riffami panów Vigny oraz Taylora, rewelacyjnym growlem Rossa Dolana oraz nie mniej charakterystycznym ponurym klimatem całości. Ta płyta ma też jeszcze jeden ważny plus, o którym koniecznie trzeba wspomnieć. Mianowicie, najbardziej melodyjne i chyba jedne z najlepszych solówek Roberta Vigny jakie nagrał na płytach Immolation! Wystarczy rzucić takimi tytułami jak "Lying With Demons", "Tarnished", tytułowy, "Whispering Death" czy "World Agony" - sama słodycz!
No ale żeby nie było, "Shadows..." to przede wszystkim brutalność, zniszczenie i kawał umiejętnie zagranej ekstremy. Należy wyróżnić w tym miejscu chociażby dość proste, zwarte i bardzo koncertowe "Passion Kill", "Breathing The Dark", "Hate's Plague" czy "The Weight Of Devotion" jako te najlepiej reprezentatywne dla całej płyty. Reszta utworów - jak łatwo się domyśleć - również trzyma poziom, słucha się ich bardzo dobrze, są też w nich wspomniane znakomite solówki Vigny i...więcej właściwie nie trzeba, żeby polubić całość. W każdym z utworów po prostu znalazła się cała masa klasycznych i już dobrze znanych dla Immolation patentów, z tym, że w przypadku owej płyty nie przechodzi mi przez myśl jakoby byłoby to wszystko "zbyt typowe". Może inaczej. Jest znajomo i raczej bez przełomu, ale wciąż interesująco i z odpowiednim wigorem. Sam mam w ich dyskografii wprawdzie inne faworyty, ale "Shadows In The Light" także trudno jest odmówić klasy i porządnego wykonania.

The uncertainty accompanying the seventh album is an enviable thing for these older bands, but certainly not for everyone. In case of Immolation this is a good sign. After much lighter "Harnessing Ruin", the quartet decided to return to brutality and the patents responsible for the atmosphere and melody put a little further back - which was beautifully shown by the ep "Hope And Horror". So "Shadows..." returns to the atmosphere of "Unholy Cult", only that it clearly gives way to its brutality and differs in sound (this one is more selective). Unfortunately, again, this is not material for the maximum rating and not as groundbreaking as most of the previous Immolation albums, even with their own discography.
It's not that important, however, because - paradoxically to this - Immolation has a lot to offer here as well, and it's impossible to say a bad word about the songs themselves. They just lack that dose of madness and chaos from older records. That's it. The rest of their music is already quite impressive as standard. The tracks are more concise than before, all of them usually last about 3-4 minutes (except "Whispering Death"), you can immediately catch the characteristic Immolation style in them, including the riffs of Mr. Vigna and Taylor, sensational growl of Ross Dolan and no less characteristic gloomy atmosphere of the whole. This album also has one more important advantage that must be mentioned. Namely, the most melodic and probably one of the best solos by Robert Vigna that he has recorded on Immolation albums ever!
Well, but not to be, "Shadows..." is primarily brutality, destruction and a piece of skillfully played extreme. It's worth mentioning here the simple, brutal and perfect for concerts like "Passion Kill", "Breathing The Dark", "Hate's Plague" or "The Weight Of Devotion" as the best representative of the whole album. The rest of the tracks - as you can easily guess - also keep their level, you can listen to them very well, there are also mentioned excellent Vigna solos and...you don't really need more to like the whole. In each of the tracks there is simply a whole lot of classic and already well-known patents for Immolation, but in the case of this album I don't think it would be all "too typical". It's familiar and rather without a breakthrough, but still interesting and with the right vigor. I have other favorites in their discography, but "Shadows In The Light" is also hard to refuse class and proper performance.
