Contrarian - "Their Worm Never Dies" (2019)

Chciałbym móc powiedzieć sporo ciekawego w kontekście "Their Worm Never Dies", ale wyszło z tej płyty coś troszkę innego niż pierwotnie przypuszczałem i recka do najciekawszych należeć jednak nie będzie. Panowie z Contrarian zdecydowali się na swoim trzecim albumie nagrać muzykę jeszcze bardziej progresywną niż na "To Perceive Is To Suffer", a co za tym idzie, mniej brutalną i mocniej poukładaną. Wnioski klarują się z tego zatem dość proste..."Their Worm Never Dies" jest - niestety - pozycją wyraźnie słabszą od poprzednich wydawnictw. Coś co wcześniej mogło urzekać w tej kapeli, teraz przeobraziło się w wtórne i irytujące. O porażce wprawdzie nie ma tutaj mowy, ale o rewelacji czy jakimkolwiek zaskoczeniu również.

O ile z brutalniejszymi rejonami wyraźnie zrywał już "To Perceive...", tak "Their Worm..." czyni to z jeszcze większym rozmachem, ale też...z dużo mniejszą finezją. Jak dla mnie, panowie trochę za mocno polecieli tutaj z tą progresją, niekiedy brakuje jej polotu, niekiedy zbyt mocno wypiera ona brutalniejszą stronę zespołu (z czym wcześniej przecież nie było problemu), innym razem wydaje się być wciśnięta totalnie na siłę. Naturalnie, realizacja, pomysły, warsztat muzyków, to wszystko może robić spore wrażenie, wszak nikt z przypadku tego nie nagrywał. Gorzej, że z powerem i ogólnym zamysłem na muzykę jest tu u nich tak sobie. To coś, jakby panowie chcieli wyłącznie odbębnić wydanie trzeciej płyty i nic ponadto. Szkoda, bo z utworów można byłoby wycisnąć naprawdę więcej, tym bardziej, że - paradoksalnie - jest z czego.

Zabrakło przede wszystkim wyobraźni, w którą stronę muzykę Contrarian poprowadzić. Same w sobie utwory nie są złe, wręcz przeciwnie!, trzymają poziom i poprawnie wpisują się w standardy progresywnego grania. Problem jednak w tym, że nie urywają one dupy (czy czegokolwiek) i wydają się zbyt mocno nastawione na technikę. Owszem, godne polecenia są w tym zestawieniu chociażby "My Curse", "Among The Mislead", "Exorcism" czy "Whomsoever Worships The Whiteworm", ale i w nich znalazło się sporo rozmiękczaczy, średnich melodii i nie zawsze jednakowo dobrych pomysłów. Pozostaje tylko dziękować kapeli, że w tym miejscu podarowali sobie covery innych wykonawców. Na takim rozwiązaniu wyszli bardzo na plus! Całości materiału niby nie jest jakoś dużo (bo raptem 7 kawałków), ale w większych dawkach taka ilość muzyki mogłaby być zupełnie niestrawna. Nie wspominając już o sytuacji, gdyby jeszcze dorzucili do tego cover.

Źle więc nie jest, ale jednak "Their Worm Never Dies" ma trochę zgrzytów, przez które album odbiera się dużo gorzej niż poprzednie. W jego przypadku niestety dość trafne są argumenty, jakie zazwyczaj zarzuca się większości parających się progresywnym death metalem - przesadnej dbałości o każdy detal. Contrarian wprawdzie nie odleciał w bezmyślną progresję czy przesadne szpanowanie techniką, ale gdzieś w tym wszystkim jednak zatracił lekkość i pomysłowość, z którymi na poprzednich longach nie było problemu. Ogólnie, spore rozczarowanie, ale przesłuchać można.

I would like to be able to say a lot of interesting things in the context of "Their Worm Never Dies", but something a bit different came out of this album than I originally thought and it will not be one of the most interesting review from me. The gentlemen from Contrarian decided on their third album to record music even more progressive than on "To Perceive Is To Suffer" and thus less brutal and more organized. The conclusions are quite simple, therefore..."Their Worm Never Dies" unfortunately is a cd clearly weaker than previous releases. Something that might have been captivating about this band has now turned into a secondary and irritating one. There is no question of failure here, but also a revelation or any surprise. 

While "To Perceive..." clearly broke with the more brutal regions, "Their Worm..." does it with even greater momentum, but also...with much less finesse. As for me, the gentlemen flew a bit too much with this progression here, sometimes music lacks surprise, sometimes it displaces all brutality side (which was not a problem before), other times it seems to be pushed completely without interesting ideas. Naturally, the production, technique, skills of musicians can all make a big impression, after all, nobody recorded it accidentally. Worse, with power and a general idea of ​​music, it's so-so with them. It's something as if the band  only wanted to release their third album any faster and nothing else. It's a pity, because with this tracks - paradoxically - there are something can be done. 

Above all, there was a lack of imagination in which direction Contrarian music should go. The songs in themselves are not bad, on the contrary!, they keep the level and correctly match the standards of progressive playing. The problem is that they don't shock and seem too technical. The list includes "My Curse", "Among The Mislead", "Exorcism" or "Whomsoever Worships The Whiteworm", the best on the "Their Worm...", but they also contain a lot of softeners, medium melodies and not always equally good ideas. The only thing left to thank the band is that they rejected covers of other artists here. There is not much of the whole material (only 7 songs), but in larger doses this amount of music could be completely indigestible. Not to mention if they'd put a cover again. 

So it's not bad, but still "Their Worm Never Dies" has a bit of a glitches, which make the album feel much worse than the previous ones. In its case, unfortunately, the arguments that are usually accused of most progressive death metal band are quite accurate - excessive attention to every detail. Contrarian did not fall into mindless progression or exaggerated showing off with technique, but somewhere where lightness and ingenuity disappeared, with which there was no problem in previous longs. Overall, quite a disappointment, but you can audition.
