Contrarian - "To Perceive Is To Suffer" (2017)

Jakże znajomy ten tytuł płyty hehehe. Ba, nawet wiem jakim zespołem panowie z Contrarian się inspirowali przy tworzeniu tego wydawnictwa! Osiągnięcie zatem godne podziwu. Cóż, tak się fajnie składa, że tym szczególikiem, następca "Polemic" faktycznie celuje w mocno znajomą stylistykę. I to w tym pozytywnym sensie! Na "To Perceive Is To Suffer" zespół bowiem jeszcze bardziej zagłębił się w granie pod Death (ale Cynic też!), a wpływy Augury'owe zepchnął na nieco dalszy plan. Przypuszczam też, że spory udział miały w tym przetasowania w składzie i zmiana stylu wokalnego. Spośród szóstki muzyków z "Polemic" ostała się czwórka osób (odeszli Leon Macey i Cody McConnell), a stanowisko frontmana objął...George Kollias (oczywiście, nie kosztem perkusji), którego wokal dość wyraźnie różni się na tle poprzednika (o tym później)! Reszta składowych pozostała u Contrarian właściwie bez większych zmian, mimo kilku istotnych nowości, to nadal progresywny death metal nie tak odległy od tego co zespół proponował na "Polemic".

Nic w tym oczywiście złego, wszak nikt o zdrowych zmysłach nie przypuszczałby, że na tym etapie kapela będzie powoływać się na jakieś odkrywanie siebie na nowo czy coś z tych rzeczy - i nie mam na celu tu dopiec zespołowi. Skończyło się w ich przypadku klasycznie...na kontynuacji poprzednika. Z tym, że bardzo dobrej i odległej od odgrzewania tych samych pomysłów! Riffy, bębny, bas i solówki ponownie celują w stylistykę Death oraz Cynic, ale co do ich wykonania nie ma mowy o jakiejś średniej wypadkowej z tych zespołów czy kopiowania jak popadnie. Słychać, że zespół jak najbardziej ma zamysł na siebie i że muzycy to i owo wiedzą w czym rzeźbić. 

Zupełnie inny - względem debiutu - jest za to wokal. Za jego sprawą, w muzyce Contrarian ostało się mniej przedrostka "brutal" a doszło więcej tego "progressive", choć i to nie jest zarzutem! Wokalizy George'a to przede wszystkim dużo Chucka Schuldinera z późniejszych płyt Death i styl generalnie odległy od "gardłowych" growlów, czyli ogólnie bardzo dobre posunięcie. Wiadomo, to nie ten sam poziom ekspresji i zróżnicowania co pierwowzór, ale całościowo wyszli na tym nie najgorzej.

Słychać po samych utworach, że pomysły wciąż kapeli dopisywały. Kawał porządnego prog-deatha prezentują tutaj chociażby "Transcend The Mundane", "Purpose Seeker", tytułowy czy "The Utopia". Mniej w nich (i niewymienionych) brutalności czy agresji, ale nie znaczy to, że wypadają one słabiej od tych z "Polemic". Po prostu stawiają na inne środki wyrazu. Klimatem, progresją i techniką bronią się jak dla mnie tak samo dobrze co kawałki z debiutu. Słabo przekonuje mnie w tym zestawieniu za to cover Fates Warning, któremu wprawdzie instrumentalnie nie mam nic do zarzucenia oraz do którego wskazany jest czysty śpiew, tyle, że...na wokalu znalazł się Paul Masvidal, śpiewak, którego falsety - w większości - totalnie odrzucają. Potrafią zamienić dosłownie każdy materiał w bezjajeczne nudziarstwo (kłania się przykład "powrotnego" Cynic od 2010 roku)! Poza tym jednym bublem, całość wypada i tak dość okazale i - paradoksalnie - równo. No a to już wynik godny pochwały i zdecydowanie niecodzienność w inspirowaniu się Death czy Cynic.

How familiar this album title is hehehe. I even know what band Contrarian were inspired by when creating this release! An admirable achievement for me haha. Well, it just so happens that with this little detail, the successor of "Polemic" actually aims at a very familiar style. In this positive sense! On "To Perceive Is To Suffer" the band went even deeper into playing under Death style (but Cynic too!) and pushed Augury's influence to the background. I also suppose that the reshuffles in the line-up and the change of the vocal style contributed a lot. Out of the six musicians from "Polemic", only four remained (Leon Macey and Cody McConnell left the band) and the position of frontman was taken by...George Kollias (of course, not at the expense of drums), whose vocal differs quite clearly from his predecessor (more on that later)! The rest of the components remained with Contrarian virtually unchanged, despite some important changes, it's still progressive death metal not so distant from what the band proposed on "Polemic". 

Nothing wrong with that, of course, after all, no one in their right mind would have guessed that at this stage the band would be referring to some kind of reinvention or something like that - and I'm not trying to hurt the band here. In their case, it ended classically...with a continuation of the predecessor. Except that it's very good and far from re-heating the same ideas! The riffs, drums, bass and solos again aim at the style of Death and Cynic, but when it comes to their performance, there is no question of any average resultant of these bands or copying if desired. You can hear that the band has an idea for themselves and that the musicians know what to do in. 

Completely different - from the debut - is the vocal. It made that in Contrarian music "brutal" prefix left and "progressive" dominated, although this is not an objection! George's vocals are mostly a lot of Chuck Schuldiner from later Death albums and the style is generally distant from "guttural" growls, which is generally a very good decision. Obviously, it's not the same level of expression and differentiation as the original, but overall they turned out to be not too bad. 

You can hear from the songs themselves that the ideas were still good for the band. A decent songs of prog-death is presented here, for example, by "Transcend The Mundane", "Purpose Seeker", the title track or "The Utopia". There is less brutality or aggression in them (and not mentioned), but that does not mean that they are weaker than those in "Polemic". They just choose other means of expression. As for me, they defend themselves just as well with the climate, progression and technique as the songs from the debut. I am not convinced in this list by the cover of Fates Warning, which I have nothing to complain about instrumentally and to which pure singing is recommended, only that...the vocal included by Paul Masvidal, a singer whose falsetto - at least for me - totally reject everything. They can turn literally any material into an uninteresting crap (look at the example of "returning" Cynic)! Apart from that, the whole cd looks quite impressive and - paradoxically - excellent. And this is a result worthy of praise and definitely something unusual in being inspired by Death or Cynic.
