Autopsy - "The Headless Ritual" (2013)

Super sprawa, że pomimo wydania "The Headless Ritual" raptem 2 lata po powrotnym materiale z 2011 roku krążek ten cieszył się niewiele gorszym zainteresowaniem od "Macabre Eternal". Szybko się jednak okazuje, że o...wiele mniej przychylnym, a głównie z powodu okładki! Ta jest oczywiście brzydka i paskudna, ale przecież idealnie pasuje do chorego stylu Autopsy - trudno zresztą, żeby oczekiwać po nich jakiejś kolorowej czy bez trupów. Tak czy owak, była ona świetnym pretekstem do przedwczesnego zjechania zespołu oraz - co za tym idzie - że Chris Reifert z resztą kapeli wydali to tylko po to, by utrzymać hype związany z "Macabre..." oraz nakosić jeszcze więcej mamony. No i właśnie nie! Spośród tego całego młynu, muzyka na "The Headless Ritual" i tak ma sporo do zaoferowania i nie jest zwyczajną kontynuacją poprzednika.

Przede wszystkim, dość wyraźnie przebija ją poziomem zwyrolstwa i jakością kawałków, a przy tym zawiera jeszcze ciekawsze pomysły oraz jest bardziej treściwa! Świetne wrażenie potęguje też tutaj ułożenie utworów, gdzie te najlepsze znalazły się początku (tj. od "Slaughter At Beast House" do "Coffin Crawlers") i które aż się ocierają o poziom "Mental Funeral". Są w nich porządne zwolnienia (w szczególności to z tappingiem w "She Is A Funeral" to totalne mistrzostwo), punkowe galopady, zajebisty nekro-klimat, różnorodność i jeszcze bardziej chore wokale Reiferta (odsyłam do najlepszego z całości "Coffin Crawlers", by wiedzieć o czym mówię) - w skrócie, wszystko co u Autopsy pożądane. Dalej jednak nie jest gorzej czy jakoś inaczej stylistycznie. Tamte 4 wyżej wymienione po prostu robią na tyle spore wrażenie, że pozostałe - choć również bardzo dobre - schodzą na nieco dalszy plan uwagi. O spadku jakościowym nie można tu mówić, a wśród tylko bardzo dobrych warto wspomnieć chociażby o "Flesh Turns To Dust", "When Hammer Meets Bone" oraz "Running From The Goathead", które mimo, że prostsze, nadrabiają sobie klimatem. Wszystkich z nich słucha się jednak wyśmienicie i zawierają w idealnych proporcjach śmiercionośnej atmosfery, no i nie są też sztucznym rozwinięciem pomysłów z "Macabre Eternal". Tak więc są wyważone w takim stopniu, by nie pomylić "The Headless Ritual" z innymi płytami Autopsy (bo różni się ona np. produkcją, feelingiem instrumentów, wokalami Chrisa), a jednocześnie nie uznać jej za zbyt przedobrzoną czy odległą od wypracowanej stylistyki.

No i "The Headless..." potwierdza również coś o czym wspominałem w przypadku recenzji "Macabre..." - tego jak powinno się wracać po latach niebytu i robić to ze smakiem. Chodzi oczywiście o to, że omawiany longplay - podobnie jak poprzednik - nie ma problemu ze zbyt sterylną produkcją, wątpliwą brutalnością czy zaskakiwaniem pewnymi zmianami, z czym spora część wiekowych zespołów ma obecnie problem. Tutaj wszystko to jest i brzmi...naprawdę świeżo! Co więcej, w ten sposób wyszła im jedna z najlepszych płyt jaka znalazła się pod szyldem Autopsy - a to już prawdziwa rzadkość co do nowszych płyt znanych nazw.

It's great that despite the release of "The Headless Ritual" only 2 years after the return material from 2011, the album enjoyed little less interest than "Macabre Eternal". However, it quickly turns out that it's much less favorable, mainly because of the cover! This one is ugly and nasty, of course, but it fits perfectly with the "sick" style of Autopsy - it's hard to expect any colorful or without corpses from them. Anyway, some prematurely criticized the band and - consequently - accused that Chris Reifert and the rest of the band released it just to keep the "Macabre..." hype and get even more money. Oh and not! Out of this whole confusion, the music on "The Headless Ritual" has a lot to offer anyway and is not an ordinary continuation of its predecessor. 

First of all, it quite clearly surpasses it with the level of pathology and quality of the songs, and at the same time it contains even more interesting ideas and is more full-bodied! A great impression is intensified here by the arrangement of the tracks, where the best ones were placed at the beginning (ie. from "Slaughter At Beast House" to "Coffin Crawlers") and which are almost at the level of "Mental Funeral". There are decent slowdowns in them (especially this with the tapping in "She Is A Funeral" is a total genius), punk galloping, awesome necro-atmosphere, variety and even more sick Reifert's vocals (I refer to the best of the whole "Coffin Crawlers", to know what I'm talking about) - in short, everything that is desirable at Autopsy. In the next songs it is not worse or somehow stylistically different. The four above-mentioned ones simply make such a big impression that the remaining ones - although also very good - are a bit "background". There is no quality decline here, and among the "only" very good ones it is worth mentioning "Flesh Turns To Dust", "When Hammer Meets Bone" and "Running From The Goathead", which, despite the fact that the simpler ones, make up for the atmosphere. All of them, however, are great to listen to and contain a deadly atmosphere in perfect proportions, and they are not an artificial extension of the ideas from "Macabre Eternal". So they are so much as not to confuse "The Headless Ritual" with other Autopsy albums (because it differs, for example, in the production, feeling of instruments, Chris's vocals), and at the same time not to consider it too overworked or distant from the developed style. 

"The Headless..." also confirms something I mentioned in the review of "Macabre..." - how bands should come back after years of non-existence and do it with "taste". The point is, of course, that the lp - just like its predecessor - has no problem with too sterile production, questionable brutality or surprising certain changes, which is something a lot of old bands have a problem with nowadays. Here it all is and sounds...really fresh! What's more, this is how one of the best albums that came under the Autopsy name came out - and this is a real rarity for newer albums from known bands.
