Cynic - "The Portal Tapes" (2012)

Na tle tego co zostało wydane na "The Portal Tapes", "Re-Traced" jawi się jako bardzo sensowna płyta! Okej, może nie muzycznie, ale pod względem szyldu jaki widnieje na obu wydawnictwach, "Re-Traced" wydaje się mieć dużo mniej absurdów niż omawiane cudeńko. "The Portal Tapes" to nic innego jak demówka Portal (drugiej kapeli, w jaką Masvidal, Reinert i Gobel przekształcili się szybko po wydaniu "Focus") przerobiona na...album Cynic! No a żeby dodać temu jeszcze większej pikanterii, "The Portal Tapes" w takim nowym wydaniu praktycznie niczym się nie różni od wersji wyjściowej.

Jak to mówią, z gówna bata nie ukręcisz. Cóż z graniem Cynic ta płyta ma tak naprawdę niewiele wspólnego i dość mocno ona odstaje nawet względem ich powrotnych płyt. W końcu, 17 lat temu żadnemu z nich nie przeszkadzał fakt by wydać to pod inną nazwą, mimo że z poprzedniego składu brakowało jedynie Seana Malone'a! Skok na kasę, ot co, pytanie tylko, czy Masvidalowi i reszcie było na rękę naruszać wielkość tej nazwy, zwłaszcza że sam w sobie Portal już od początków swojej kariery jawił się jako cień możliwości twórców "Focus".

Wreszcie finalne potwierdzenie - utwory. Te nie mają kompletnie nic wspólnego z finezją i nowatorstwem "Focus". Dominują smętne śpiewy w duecie Aruny Abrams i Paula Masvidala, banalne klawiszowe wstawki, nijakie melodie i delikatne muśnięcia gitarowe. Fajnie wypada sekcja i niektóre solówki, ale to stanowczo za mało jak na takich wizjonerów pokroju Masvidal, Gobel, Reinert czy Kringel. Częściowo bronią się w tym zestawieniu "Cosmos", "Circle" oraz "Endless Endeavors", głównie za sprawą - nomen omen - kosmicznego klimatu czy ciekawiej urozmaiconej sekcji i solówek, ale to w sumie wszystko co ma do zaoferowania ten materiał. Reszta kawałków niestety nie zawiera zbyt wiele sensu i pomysłów, a bynajmniej nie tyle co w tych lepszych utworach.

Tak więc "The Portal Tapes" to rzecz z cyklu tych do nie-kupowania i nie-polecania. Lata temu ten materiał nie wydawał się być niczym szczególnym, w 2012 roku, kiedy zdecydowano się go przebranżowić na nazwę Cynic również. Najbardziej jednak wkurwia, że po raz kolejny pod tą nazwę trafiło wydawnictwo totalnie niedopasowane stylistycznie i na o wiele niższym poziomie niż ich właściwe płyty.

Against the background of what was released on "The Portal Tapes", "Re-Traced" seems to be a very sensible album! Okay, maybe not musically, but in terms of the name that appears on both releases, "Re-Traced" seems to have a lot less absurdities than the "wonder" in question. "The Portal Tapes" is nothing more than a demo of Portal (the second band that Masvidal, Reinert and Gobel transformed into quickly after the release of "Focus") converted into...the Cynic album! Furthermore, "The Portal Tapes" in this "new" edition practically does not differ from the original version. 

The problem, however, is that this album has little in common to Cynic style (even against the background of their "comeback" albums) and it stands out from their basic albums. After all, 17 years ago, neither of them bothered to release it under a different name. The only person who was missing from the previous line-up was Sean Malone! Easy cash, that's the main idea of this cd! The only question is whether Masvidal and the rest could violate the size of this name, the more that the Portal itself from the very beginning of its "career" seemed to be a shadow of the possibilities of the creators of "Focus". 

Finally, the confirmation - music. This one has absolutely nothing to do with the finesse and innovation of "Focus". It's dominated by sleepy singing in the duet of Aruna Abrams and Paul Masvidal, banal keyboard inserts, nondescript melodies and delicate guitars. The section and some solos are nice, but it's definitely not enough for such visionaries as Masvidal, Gobel, Reinert or - to a lesser extent - Kringel. "Cosmos", "Circle" and "Endless Endeavors" partially defend themselves in this combination, mainly due to the cosmic atmosphere or the more interesting sections and solos, but that's all that this material has to offer. The rest of the songs, unfortunately, do not contain much sense and ideas, not as much as in these "better" songs. 

So "The Portal Tapes" is a cd of the non-buy and non-recommend style. Years ago, this material did not seem to be anything special, let alone in 2012, when it was decided to change it to the name of the Cynic also. More pissed off that once again this name is given to a release that is completely stylistically mismatched and at a much lower level than their "proper" albums.
