Chaos Over Cosmos - "The Unknown Voyage" (2019)

Polecanki i promowanie nowszych, najczęściej młodszych kapel jest różne: raz lepsze, przeważnie jednak - wbrew temu co w tytule bloga - niewarte większego zachodu. No i muszę przyznać, że omawiany Chaos Over Cosmos nie bardzo wiem, w którą kategorię z tej teorii tak naprawdę wpisać. Tenże polsko-hiszpański projekt (Rafał Bowman - gitary, bas, programowanie perki; Javier Calderon - wokale) z jednej strony celuje w dość ambitne granie, ma na siebie jako tako niezły pomysł i wyróżnia się na tle innych progresywnych grup (arogancko dodam jeszcze, że na tyle, że w ogóle chce mu się poświęcać czas), z drugiej sięga on do wpływów z kapel, które średnio (albo wcale) jestem w stanie zdzierżyć. Nawet w formie guilty pleasure.

Stylistyka "The Unknown Voyage" to bowiem progresywny power metal, który przemyca te fajniejsze patenty z Control Denied, Iron Maiden i Cynic (mniej więcej z okresu "Traced In Air"), ale jednocześnie w dużo większych ilościach te bardziej kiczowate i wesołkowate z Helloween oraz Fates Warning, tworząc dziwaczny misz-masz dość rozbudowanej, a zarazem mocno rozwodnionej i mało konkretnej muzyki. Niestety, o "The Unknown..." nie można mówić jako o wyjątku od reguły na miarę przywołanego już Control Denied, o Spiral Architect nie wspominając (jako jedne z wzorców prog powera, które mnie interesują). 

Powiem tak, debiutancki album Chaos Over Cosmos to fundament pod coś większego, moim zdaniem wykorzystanego tutaj połowicznie. Może gdyby okroić ten album do trzech (najlepszych) utworów pokroju "Armour Of The Stars", "Neon Nights" oraz "Sky" i na ich pomysłach oprzeć resztę krążka, to wtedy możliwe, że można byłoby mówić o rewelacji - jest w nich sporo sensownej techniki, fajne synthwave'owe wstawki, nie mniej kombinowania i ciekawych melodii. Ba, w tych numerach słychać też, że Rafał bardzo swobodnie czuje się w dłuższych kompozycjach (przeważają bliskie 10-iu minut) i że pomysły dopisują. Po drugiej stronie, są też tu "The Compass" i  "Dance Of The Silver Blades", które dłużą się, nie mają zbyt porywających melodii i irytują "dramatycznymi" wokalizami Javiera. Właśnie, jeszcze inaczej (pewnie dużo lepiej) odbierałoby się ten album bez wokali, ewentualnie z tymi celującymi w mocniejsze gatunki. Bo instrumentalnie na "The Unknown..." absolutnie nie mam nic do zarzucenia (może poza trochę schowanym basem). Gitary śmigają jak trzeba, solówek jest bardzo dużo, technika wykracza ponad średnią krajową, dawka szaleństwa jakaś się tam znalazła. Co więcej, nawet brak drummera nie daje się tu we znaki! Kompozycyjnie jak mówiłem jest przeważnie ciekawie i raczej ambitnie, ale myślę, że gdyby jeszcze raz przemyśleć ten materiał i dobrać lepszego wokalistę, "The Unknown Voyage" mógłby narobić szumu i znaleźć szersze grono odbiorców. W takiej formie jednak do zjawiskowych brakuje mu dość dużo.

Recommendations and promotion of newer, usually younger bands are different: sometimes better, but usually - contrary to what in the blog's title - not worth the greater effort. And I must admit that the discussed Chaos Over Cosmos do not really know which category from this theory should really be entered. This Polish-Spanish project (Rafał Bowman - guitars, bass, drum programming; Javier Calderon - vocals), on the one hand, aims at quite ambitious playing, has a pretty good idea and stands out from other progressive groups (I will add arrogantly, so much that it wants to devote any time to it), on the other hand, it reaches for the income from bands, which I am able to bear on average (or not at all). Even in the form of guilty pleasure. 

The style of "The Unknown Voyage" is progressive power metal, which smuggles the cooler patents from Control Denied, Iron Maiden and Cynic (somehow from the "Traced In Air" period), but at the same time in much larger quantities the more kitschy and cheerful ones from Helloween and Fates Warning, creating a bizarre mix quite extensive, and at the same time heavily without power. Unfortunately, "The Unknown..." cannot be said to be an exception to the already mentioned Control Denied rule, not to mention Spiral Architect (as one of the prog power patterns). 

Let me put it this way, the debut album Chaos Over Cosmos is the substructure for something bigger, in my opinion used only partially here. Maybe if they cut this album down to three (best) songs like "Armor Of The Stars", "Neon Nights" and "Sky" and base the rest of the album on their ideas, then maybe we could talk about a revelation - there are a lot of them in them sensible technique, nice synthwave inserts, no less combining and interesting melodies. Well, in these tracks you can also hear that Rafał feels very comfortable in longer compositions (almost 10 minutes are predominant) and that he adds a lot of ideas. On the other side, there are also "The Compass" and "Dance Of The Silver Blades", which linger, don't have too rousing melodies and irritate with Javier's "dramatic" vocals. Exactly, even differently (probably much better) this album would be perceived without vocals, or with those targeting stronger genres. Because instrumentally on "The Unknown..." I have absolutely nothing to complain about (maybe except a little hidden bass). The guitars flick as they should, there are a lot of solos, the technique is above the genre average, the dose of madness is there. What's more, even the lack of a drummer does not make its mark here! Compositionally, as I said, it's usually interesting and rather ambitious, but I think that if Rafał rethought this material and choose a better singer, "The Unknown Voyage" could make some hype and find a wider audience. In this form, however, it lacks quite a lot to the phenomenal.
