The Lurking Fear - "Out Of The Voiceless Grave" (2017)

Pewnie będę w tej opinii odosobniony, no ale cóż, powrót At The Gates to jak dla mnie nic specjalnie ekscytującego (no dobra, może połowicznie) - dość poprawne i poziomem wyższe od Dark Tranquility i In Flames granie, ale niestety bez takiego polotu co kiedyś i w niektórych miejscach aż zbyt sentymentalne. Niedługo po premierze "At War With Reality" pojawiła się jednak na takich jak ja rekompensata, czyli The Lurking Fear, projekt muzyków At The Gates, Edge Of Sanity i Sarcasm, którego debiutancki album mógłby...wylądować pod szyldem tej pierwszej kapeli! Ideą jaka przyświecała The Lurking Fear było wprawdzie stworzenie muzyki w stylu starej Szwecji (tj. pod Entombed), ale w mojej skromnej opinii, wyszło im z tego coś dużo ciekawszego.

Tak się fajnie złożyło, że "Out Of The Voiceless Grave" dzieli sporo podobieństw z wspomnianym "At War...", przy czym ma tę przewagę, że jest szybszy, nieco brutalniejszy, mniej melodyjny i bardziej szaleńczy. No a to musiało się oczywiście przełożyć na muzykę lepszą i bardziej konkretną, czyli taką, w której nie brak pierdolnięcia oraz pomysłów na kompozycje, a z czym u powrotnego At The Gates nie zawsze było tak kolorowo. Właściwie, wszystkie z utworów na "Out..." trzymają jednakowo wysoki poziom i każdy z nich oferuje równie ciekawe riffy, toteż ograniczę się do wymienienia singlowego "The Infernal Dread", najkonkretniejszego "The Starving Gods Of Old", "Upon Black Winds" z ciekawym wyciszeniem na koniec oraz najbardziej etdegejtsowego "Tongued With Foul Flames". No a jeśli taki opis jeszcze wystarczająco dobrze nie ukazuje lepszości The Lurking Fear ponad reunionowym At The Gates to warto nadmienić o takich sporych plusach tego krążka jak ciekawiej dopasowanym skrzeku Tomasa Lindberga do muzyki, cieplejszej dla ucha produkcji czy o fajnym, oldschoolowym klimacie całości, czyli o rzeczach, które paradoksalnie mogłyby co nieco odświeżyć aktualną formułę At The Gates!

Póki co, pozostaje się cieszyć, że projekt ten nie okazał się być zlepkiem paru większych nazwisk i że poszła za tym wszystkim bardzo dobra muzyka. Luz związany z nagrywaniem "Out Of The Voiceless Grave" słyszalny jest, kompozycje trzymają się kupy i potrafią zatrzymać na dłużej, a pomysły wypływają Szwedom na tej płycie bardzo naturalnie. Tak więc, debiut The Lurking Fear zawiera w sobie wszystko z czym większość współczesnych supergrup ma olbrzymie problemy.

I will probably be alone in this opinion, but well, the return of At The Gates is nothing particularly exciting for me (okay, halfway) - quite correct and level above Dark Tranquility and In Flames playing, but unfortunately without the flair that used to be, and in some places too sentimental. Shortly after the premiere, however, "At War With Reality" appeared on compensation, The Lurking Fear, a project of musicians At The Gates, Edge Of Sanity and Sarcasm, whose debut album could...land under the name of this first band! The idea behind The Lurking Fear was to create music in the style of old Sweden (ie. like Entombed), but in my humble opinion, they came up with something much more interesting. 

It so happened that "Out Of The Voiceless Grave" shares a lot of similarities with the aforementioned "At War...", with the advantage of being faster, a bit more brutal, less melodic and more crazy. Well, of course, it had to come into better and more specific music, that is, one that does not lack power and ideas for compositions, and which was not always so colorful in the returning At The Gates cd. Actually, all of the tracks on "Out..." are of the same high level and each of them offers equally interesting riffs, so I will limit myself to mentioning the single "The Infernal Dread", the most specific "The Starving Gods Of Old", "Upon Black Winds" with an interesting mute at the end and the most in the At The Gates style "Tongued With Foul Flames". Well, and if such a description does not show well enough The Lurking Fear's superiority over the reunion At The Gates, it's worth mentioning about such considerable advantages of this disc as the more interestingly matched voice of Tomas Lindberg to music, a production that is warmer to the ear or a cool, old-school atmosphere of the whole, so there are the things that, paradoxically, could refresh the current At The Gates formula! 

For now, I can be glad that this project did not turn out to be a cluster of a few bigger names and that very good music was recorded. The fun associated with the recording of "Out Of The Voiceless Grave" is audible, the compositions stick together and can stay for longer, and the Swedes' ideas flow very naturally on this album. So, The Lurking Fear's debut encompasses everything that most modern supergroups struggle with.
