C-187 - "Collision" (2007)

Na wieść o projekcie złożonym (prawie w całości) z muzyków Pestilence, Atheist oraz Cynic zainteresowanie i sprzedaż powinny z miejsca zacząć dopisywać bardziej niż przyzwoicie, tymczasem...projekt poistniał chwilę i błyskawicznie zakończył działalność. Cóż, owy C-187 to twór powstały z inicjatywy gitarzysty Patricka Mameli we współpracy z basistą Tonym Choyem, perkusistą Sean'em Reinertem i wokalistą Tonym Jelencovichem, ale, niestety, nie powiązany z powyższymi nazwami. Trójka z panów powracając za sprawą tego projektu "na stałe" do cięższego grania postanowiła niestety uderzyć w stylistykę, która obficie czerpie z...Machine Head, Soulfly i tego typu. No a to z miejsca nie mogło zapowiadać górnolotnej muzyki.

Szkoda, bo szansa na sensowny materiał była - paradoksalnie - dość duża! Instrumentalnie, "Collision" nie należy do najbardziej typowych i dałoby się z niego wyciągnąć naprawdę sporo. Są na nim chociażby zakręcone riffy i solówki Patricka sięgające zarówno patentów z nowoczesnego, "szarpanego" metalu oraz "Spheres" (co z automatu przekłada się na coś nietypowego), bardziej poukładane i "grooviaste" bębnienie Reinerta czy okazjonalnie wybijające się partie basu Choya (niestety bez szaleństw). Tak więc, niemały fundament pod coś znacznie ciekawszego. C-187 ma jednak też pana wokalistę. No i właśnie, udział Jelencovicha w tym projekcie to coś co doszczętnie kładzie całość "Collision". Do tego stopnia, że po pierwszych 2-3 utworach ma się totalnie dość tej płyty.

Jak wspominałem, instrumentalnie jest dosyć fajnie, ba!, niektóre pomysły spokojnie można podciągnąć pod zapowiedź patentów z reaktywowanego Pestilence (np. niektórych, "szarpanych" riffów czy tych "zanikających" na czysto). Nic jednak z ich "fajności" i tego, że zdarza im się kombinować! Wokale skutecznie zniszczyły dosłownie każdy utwór na tym albumie. Tony śpiewa na parę różnych sposobów: od krzyków, niby-rapowania, skończywszy na czystych zaśpiewach. Pełen pakiet. Tyle żeee, jest to tak irytujący i trudny do przetrawienia pakiet, że pozostałe partie instrumentów przestają być szczególnie istotne przy tak wstrzelonym od czapy śpiewie. W żadnym z tych stylów wokal Jelencovicha nie wypada choćby przyzwoicie. Na miano najlepszych z tego zestawienia nadają się może "Knee Deep In" (ciekawy klimat), "Homicide" (odjechane gitary) czy "Cruisin' For A Bruisin'" (też gitary), ale niewiele ponadto - generalnie w nich również poziom jest żenująco niski. Z drugiej strony, czemu się dziwić, z takim wokalistą po prostu nie dało się uzyskać ciekawszych rezultatów.

No i trzeba przyznać, że jak na umiejętności tak znakomitych instrumentalistów (i sam fakt, że znalazło się tu aż 14 utworów!) to bardzo mizerny wynik, gdy trudno wybrać jakiekolwiek highlighty z całości płyty. C-187 to projekt z cyklu tych dla nikogo - ani dla fanów Pestilence, Cynic, Atheist, jak i tych od nowocześniejszych tworów. Tak po prawdzie, "Collision" można obczaić jedynie z własnej, chorej ciekawości, tego jak wyglądały pierwsze podrygi Mameliego, Choya i (częściowo) Reinerta po tak długiej wydawniczej przerwie od rozpadu ich macierzystych kapel. Tyle że nawet pod tym względem "Collision" nie wypada bardziej okazale.

Well, about the project consisting (almost entirely) of musicians Pestilence, Atheist and Cynic, the interest and sales should start to be more than decent, meanwhile...the project took a moment to come to an end. The C-187 is a project founded on the initiative of guitarist Patrick Mameli, bassist Tony Choy, drummer Sean Reinert and vocalist Tony Jelencovich, but not having much connection with the above - great after all! - names. Three of the gentlemen, returning to heavier playing due to this project, unfortunately decided to hit the style, which - apart from Mameli's ideas similar to those from Pestilence - inspires by...Machine Head, Soulfly and this type of bands. Well, this could not be a sign of lofty music right away. 

It's a pity, because the chance for meaningful material was - paradoxically - quite big! Instrumentally, "Collision" is not the most typical and there could be get a lot out of it. There are even Patrick's twisted riffs and solos reaching both patents from modern metal and "Spheres" (which comes into something bizarrely different), Reinert's more organized and "groovy" drumming or the occasional standout bass parts of Choy (unfortunately without madness from Atheist style). So, quite a potential for something much more interesting. However, the C-187 also has a singer. Well, Jelencovich's participation in this project is something that completely puts out the whole "Collision". So much so that after the first 2-3 songs you get totally enough with this album. 

As I mentioned, instrumentally it's quite fun, furthermore!, some ideas can be easily subsumed under the announcement of patents from the reunion Pestilence (eg. some "modern" riffs or those "disappearing" clean). Well, but...there are vocals! Vocals successfully destroyed literally every track on this album! Tony sings in a number of different ways: from screaming, fake-rapping, to pure singing. Full package. It's just that, it's such an irritating and hard-to-digest package that the remaining parts of the instruments are not particularly important with the singing shot out from the main ideas. In neither of these styles Jelencovich's vocals are even decent. "Knee Deep In" (interesting atmosphere), "Homicide" (crazy guitars) or "Cruisin 'For A Bruisin'" (also crazy guitars) can be titled as such quite okay, but not much else. With such a singer it was simply impossible to get more interesting results. 

And I must admit that considering the skills of such musicians (and the fact that there are as many as 14 songs here!), it is a very poor result, when it's difficult to choose any highlights from the entire album. The C-187 is a project from the series for nobody - neither for fans of Pestilence, Cynic, Atheist, as well as those from more modern bands. In fact, "Collision" can only be seen from your own sick curiosity, what the first leaps of Mameli, Choy and (partly) Reinert looked like after such a long publishing break since their main bands broke up. But in this respect "Collision" doesn't look more impressive.
