Pestilence - "Doctrine" (2011)

Ciekawa sprawa z tym powrotnym Pestilence, pierwsze uderzenie z ich strony pod postacią "Resurrection Macabre" średnio przypadło mi do gustu i rozczarowywało niemal pod każdym względem (oczywiście jak na standardy tej kapeli), za to kolejne...już takich uwag nie nasuwa i wydaje się być krążkiem spełniającym owe oczekiwania! O wielkiej rewolucji na "Doctrine" niestety też nie ma mowy, chooociaż, jak na ironię, pewnych chęci zrobienia muzyki wyraźnie inaczej w stosunku do poprzedniego wydawnictwa również się na nim znalazło. Wniosek z tego prosty, "Doctrine" ma tę przewagę nad poprzednikiem, że sięga do kilku mniej nietypowych rozwiązań, zapożycza trochę patentów od innych, nowocześniejszych wykonawców, a przy tym wciąż brzmi wiarygodnie, jednorodnie gatunkowo i pestilencowo. Czyli właśnie tak jak "Resurrection..." brzmieć powinien.

Spore przełożenie miały na to zmiany w składzie. O ile od strony perkusji wymiana nastąpiła 1:1, tj. Petera Wildoera zastąpił równie utalentowany Yuma van Eekelen, o tyle pojawienie się z powrotem Jeroena Paula Thesselinga i Patricka Uterwijka (ostatni zawitał do kapeli już na etapie teledysku do poprzedniej płyty) tchnęło w Pestilence nowe życie. Holendrzy wspólnie wpadli bowiem na pomysł dociążenia poprzedniego brzmienia jeszcze bardziej poprzez 8-strunowe gitary i ponad całość wysunąć 6-strunowy bezprogowy bas. Efekty wyszły bardzo ciekawe, ponieważ obaj gitarzyści tym razem sensownie wykorzystali wpływy Meshuggah (no a poza tym, uzyskane brzmienie po prostu miażdży), podczas gdy bas Jeroena mocno nawiązuje do szaleństw z "Cosmogenesis" Obscury, w której Thesseling również się udzielał.

Wszystko to przełożyło się na bardzo dobre i zróżnicowane utwory, w których całkiem ciekawie przemieszano charakterystyczne dla Pestilence patenty oraz trochę tych "nowocześniejszych". Przykładem chociażby "Divinity", "Sinister" czy tytułowy - znakomicie prezentujące bujające i "szarpane" riffy w death metalowej stylistyce. Bardziej tradycyjna strona krążka to "Malignant", "Amgod", "Dissolve" (początek zalatuje mi Morbidami!) czy "Salvation", z kolei takie "Deception" oraz "Absolution" to najlepszy popis talentu Jeroena, w których znalazły się basowe solówki! Generalnie, i tak każdy z tych utworów trzyma jednakowo znakomity poziom, we wszystkich jest jakiś pomysł, no i na pochwałę należy się im, że pomimo prostych schematów (ale nie partii instrumentów!), Holendrzy nie popadli w nudę czy powtarzalność. Na "Doctrine" dziwne rzeczy są tylko dwie: refreny i wokale - tak gdzieś na granicy wady i zalety. No i o ile pierwsze nie uległo żadnym zmianom od czasu poprzedniego krążka (czyli, znów są oparte o jedno, tytułowe słowo), o tyle drugie pozmieniało się już bardzo wyraźnie. Otóż, Patrick Mameli zdecydował się na zdecydowanie wyższy i bardziej wyziewny typ krzyku, jakby nawiązując do starych czasów z van Drunenem! Wyszło trochę groteskowo i niekiedy sztucznie, ale całościowo nie jest to coś co odbiera radochę z tej płyty. Idzie się przyzwyczaić.

Najbardziej jednak cieszy, że kompozytorsko i instrumentalnie, "Doctrine" to dość sensowny i naprawdę interesujący materiał ze strony Holendrów, zwłaszcza po mocno wyrachowanym "Resurrection Macabre". Tym razem, ekipie Patricka Mameli udało się stworzyć muzykę, która nie wykracza ponad nieznane, a jednocześnie, która nie jest kalką starych (i najczęściej przeoranych) patentów. Bez względu na parę wyżej wspomnianych zgrzytów!

An interesting thing about this return Pestilence, the first hit from their side in the form of "Resurrection Macabre" I liked on average and disappointed in almost every respect (of course by the standards of this band), but the next...does not raise such comments anymore and seems to be an album that meets these expectations! Unfortunately, there is also no question of a great revolution on "Doctrine", although, ironically, some desire to make music clearly different than the previous release was also featured on it. The conclusion is simple, "Doctrine" has the advantage over its predecessor, that it reaches for a few less unusual solutions, borrows some patents from other, more modern bands, and at the same time still sounds credible, homogeneous in terms of genre and like Pestilence! So just like "Resurrection..." should be. 

The changes in the line-up had a significant impact on this. While the drummer changed 1:1, i.e. Peter Wildoer was replaced by the equally talented Yuma van Eekelen, the reappearance of Jeroen Paul Thesseling and Patrick Uterwijk (the last one came to the band already at the stage of the music video for the previous album) breathed into Pestilence new life. Together, the Dutch came up with the idea of ​​adding much heavier sound to the previous sound even more by means of 8-string guitars and to extend the 6-string fretless bass above the whole. The effects turned out very interesting, because both guitarists this time sensibly used Meshuggah's influences (and besides, the resulting sound just crushes), while Jeroen's bass strongly refers to the madness of "Cosmogenesis" Obscura, in which Thesseling was also involved. 

All this came into very good and varied songs, in which the patents characteristic of Pestilence and some of the "more modern" ones were mixed up quite interestingly. For example, "Divinity", "Sinister" or the title one - perfectly presenting "rocking" and "jerky" riffs in a death metal style. The more traditional side of the disc is "Malignant", "Amgod", "Dissolve" (the beginning sounds like Morbid Angel!) or "Salvation", while such "Deception" and "Absolution" are the best display of Jeroen's talent, in which there are bass solos! In general, each of these tracks is of an equally excellent level, they all have an interesting idea, and they deserve praise that despite the simple patterns (but not the instrument parts!), the Dutch did not fall into boredom or repetition. There are only two strange things on "Doctrine": choruses and vocals - somewhere on the verge of advantages and disadvantages. And while the first has not changed in any way since the previous album (i.e. again based on one title word), the second has changed very clearly. Well, Patrick Mameli decided to do a much higher and more exhilarating type of vocals, as if referring to the old days with van Drunen! It turned out a bit grotesque and sometimes artificially, but overall it's not something that takes a lot of joy from this album. One can get used to it. 

However, the best is that in terms of composition and instrumentation, "Doctrine" is quite sensible and really interesting material on the part of the Dutch, especially after the highly calculated "Resurrection Macabre". This time, Patrick Mameli's band managed to create music that does not go beyond the unknown, and at the same time, which is not a copy of old (and most often too well known) patents. Regardless of the couple of glitches mentioned above!
