Sieta - "Novgorod" (2021)

Guilty pleasure, recenzja ciekawostka, zwał jak zwał. Ja powiem, że po prostu nieczęsto można mnie przyłapać na słuchaniu black metalu z przedrostkiem "folk/pagan". W przypadku omawianej Siety pozwoliłem sobie zrobić wyjątek na blogu, a to z tego prostego względu, że...3/5 ekipy to przecież muzycy ze Skyglow! Byłem ciekaw co tam Rosjanie stworzą w takiej stylistyce, tym bardziej, że parę lat wcześniej udało im się stworzyć bardzo sensowny, death metalowy krążek przesiąknięty debiutami Dark Tranquility i At The Gates (odsyłam do recki "Thousand Years Of Terror").

No i cóż, chyba niepotrzebnie się napalałem. Po folk metalowych brzmieniach z reguły trudno oczekiwać czegoś ambitnego czy niesamowicie porywającego, ale gdzieś tam jednak namiastka nadziei była na ciekawe wydawnictwo. Całość tego stylu wypada u Siety oczywiście lepiej niż "średnia krajowa", ale...nie oznacza też to z miejsca, że materiał odbiera się w jakichś superlatywach. Wiele sztampowych i przesadnie upraszczających muzykę rozwiązań, z których ten (pod)gatunek szerzej zaistniał, uniknąć się na "Novgorod" niestety nie udało. Co gorsza, owy przaśny metal pod piwko i ognisko właśnie przeważa na tej płycie - mimo że (chyba) miało być ekstremalnie.

W każdym razie, po nieco przydługim intro, do głośników nadciąga utwór tytułowy z kolejną introdukcją (?), przechodząc w skoczny i wesolutki...melo-death. Mijają jednak kolejne odsłuchy i wtedy koncept "Novgorod" staje się nieco bardziej przejrzysty - zespół przeważnie uderza z weselszym i "cieplejszym" utworem, by potem przełamać go mroczniejszym, blackowym. No i trzeba przyznać, że - jak na ironię - przejście pomiędzy tytułowcem a "Knyaz" jest mistrzowskie, pierwszy z wymienionych ma fajny, "chóralny" refren, a w późniejszych kawałkach z blastami całość może poszczycić się coraz to żwawszymi tempami. Problem jednak w tym, że to wszystko co jestem w stanie wymienić in plus na temat tego krążka; no a trzeba przyznać, że to trochę mało jak na ponad 50-io minutowy materiał. Pozostałe elementy płyty (klimat, folkowe wstawki, melodie, koncept), choć solidne, średnio potrafią mnie zainteresować. Nawet pomimo wyższego poziomu niż u innych.

Guilty pleasure, a trivia review, whatever. I will say that I just rarely get caught listening to black metal with the prefix "folk/pagan". In the case of the discussed Sieta, I allowed myself to make an exception on the blog, and this is because...3/5 of the band are musicians from Skyglow! I was curious what the Russians will create in such a style, the more that a few years earlier they managed to create a very sensible death metal album saturated with the debuts of Dark Tranquility and At The Gates (refer to the "Thousand Years Of Terror" review). 

Well, I guess I got unnecessarily horny. From folk metal sounds it's hard to expect something ambitious or incredibly thrilling, but somewhere there was a bit of hope for an interesting release. The whole style of this style is obviously better than the "mediocrity", but...it does not mean immediately that the material is perceived in some superlatives. Many clichéd and overly simplifying solutions, of which this (sub)genre appeared more widely, were unfortunately not avoided on "Novgorod". What's worse, this unleavened metal of beer and campfires just prevails on this album - even though (probably) it was supposed to be extreme. 

Anyway, after a slightly lengthy intro, the title track comes to the speakers with another introduction (?), turning into a lively and cheerful...melo-death song. However, more auditions pass and then the concept of "Novgorod" becomes a bit more transparent - the band usually hits with a happier and "warmer" track, and then break it with a darker, black metal track. And I have to admit that - ironically - the transition between the title track and "Knyaz" is masterful, the former has a nice, "choral" chorus, and in later songs with blasts the whole cd can boast more and more lively paces. The problem, however, is that all that I am able to mention in plus about of this album...is contained in the previous sentence! Well, it must be admitted that it's a bit small for an above 50-minute material. The other elements of the album (atmosphere, folk inserts, melodies, concept) are solid, but for me, they can arouse average interest. Even despite the higher level than others.
