Dead Congregation - "Graves Of The Archangels" (2008)

O tych jegomościach słyszy się sporo w kontekście objawienia, zwłaszcza jeśli pada określenie godnych następców dla Morbid Angel, Incantation czy Immolation. Coś w tym jest, choć trzeba też jasno nakreślić, że Grekom z Dead Congregation byłoby bardzo krzywdząco przypisywać wyłącznie ślepe naśladownictwo. Szybko bowiem się okazało, że grupa ma zamysł na siebie, a jednocześnie, że nie wymyślając koła na nowo da się tworzyć jednakowo porywające, death metalowe albumy na miarę tych z lat dziewięćdziesiątych. Najpierw można się było o tym przekonać za sprawą epki "Purifying Consecrated Ground", 3 lata później, dużo dobitniej, po wydaniu omawianego "Graves Of The Archangels" - oficjalnego debiutu kapeli.

Death metal w wykonaniu Greków jest więc wszystkim tym co w ekstremie najbardziej pożądane, czyyyli to dawka podziemia pełnego duchoty i grobowego - rodem z okładki - klimatu, bez przesadnego gruzowania czy zamulania. Świetne wrażenie wywiera chociażby duża ilość morbidowych riffów, nienaganna technika, "onwardowe" rytmy, doomowe wstawki, liczne urozmaicenia spoza klasycznego instrumentarium (mowa o chórkach i tego typu), kanonady blastów, no i najważniejsze, komponowanie. Dzięki temu ostatniemu nie ma mowy o nagłych przeskokach (czy to jakościowych czy stylistycznych) ani też o wałkowaniu w kółko aż nadto zbliżonych do siebie patentów. Zreeesztą, takich kawałków jak "Morbid Paroxysm", "Source Of Fire" (końcówka bliska późnego Immolation, oj bliska!), "Vanishing Faith", "Teeth Into Red" (najbardziej spektakularny - znów, odsyłam do tematu urozmaiceń) czy tytułowego (świetnie nabierający rozpędu), nie idzie ze sobą pomylić! Wszystkie z nich (i te niewymienione również) poza tym, że zagrane są z olbrzymim zaangażowaniem, wyróżniają się własnym zamysłem na klimat i - po przeciwnej stronie - znakomitymi nawiązaniami do większych nazw. Na tyle też, by nie uznać Dead Congregation za jakąś tam zwyklacką wypadkową z wymienionej we wstępie trójki.

Takie albumy jak "Graves Of The Archangels" świetnie pokazują, że w XXI w. powstają bardzo dobre, death metalowe wydawnictwa, do których chce się wracać i które śmiało można postawić na podium z tymi największymi z ubiegłego wieku. Jeszcze bardziej zaskakującym jest z kolei, że Grecy z Dead Congregation nie silili się przy tym na jak najmocniejszy i najbardziej wyziewny oldskul.

About these guys you can hear in the context of revelation, especially when it comes to describing worthy successors for Morbid Angel, Incantation or Immolation. There is some truth in it, although it must also be made clear that it would be very harmful to attribute Dead Congregation as the blind imitation. It turned out that the group had an idea for itself, and at the same time that by not reinventing the wheel, it's possible to create equally thrilling, death metal albums similar to those from the nineties. First foretaste was an ep "Purifying Consecrated Ground", 3 years later, much more forcefully, the release of the discussed "Graves Of The Archangels" - the band's official debut. 

Death metal performed by the Greeks is therefore everything that is most desirable in extremes, i.e. a dose of a stuffy and gloomy - straight from the cover - atmosphere, without boredom. A great impression is made, for example, by a large number of morbidish riffs, impeccable technique, "onwardish" rhythms, doom metal inserts, numerous variations outside the classical instrumentation (I am talking about choirs and this type), cannonades of blasts, and most importantly, composing. By this the latter thing, there is no sudden hesitation (both qualitative and stylistic ) or rolling over and over again patents that are too similar to each other. Anywaaay, such tracks as "Morbid Paroxysm", "Source Of Fire" (the ending is close to the late Immolation, oh, really close!), "Vanishing Faith", "Teeth Into Red" (the most spectacular - again, I refer to the album's variations) or the title track (great gaining momentum), it doesn't go wrong! All of them (and those not mentioned as well), apart from the fact that they are played with great commitment, are distinguished by their own idea of ​​the atmosphere and excellent references to larger names. Also enough not to consider Dead Congregation as some ordinary resultant of the three mentioned bands in the introduction of this review. 

Albums such as "Graves Of The Archangels" perfectly show that in the 21st century there are very good death metal releases that you want to come back to and which you can confidently put on the podium with the greatest from the last century. It's even more surprising that the Greeks from the Dead Congregation did not try to make the most exhilarating old school.
