Cannibal Corpse - "Vile" (1996)

Zmiany, zmiany, zmiany...trochę dziwnie przechodzi to przez myśl w kontekście Cannibal Corpse, no ale takie są fakty, ponieważ coś tam rzeczywiście się u tych Amerykanów zadziało pomiędzy "The Bleeding" a "Vile". Owe coś tam tyczy się przede wszystkim wywalenia Chrisa Barnesa oraz podebrania na jego stanowisko ówczesnego frontmana Monstrosity, czyli George'a Fishera. Strata z pewnością była z tego istotna (w sumie to w obu kapelach), aczkolwiek jak twierdziła pozostała czwórka muzyków, Chrisowi coraz mocniej zwisało ich zdanie i - przede wszystkim - nie czuł już death metalu tak samo jak poprzednio (co się dziwić, pierwsze [ale nie tylko] płyty Six Feet Under tego najgorszym najlepszym przykładem), toteż taka decyzja wydaje się być jak najbardziej logiczną. Zresztą, jak się szybko okazało, zmiany personalne, jakie zaszły na przestrzeni tych dwóch lat dość szybko zaakceptowano i nie obniżyły popularności grupy.

Wraz z ukazaniem się "Vile" zespół znacząco odrzucił udziwnianie z "The Bleeding" (co jednak nie było czymś złym), a zamiast tego postanowili oni pójść w prosty, rytmiczny death metal. Efekty wyszły dobre, bo muzyka nie straciła na tym nic z brutalności i ogólnie nie została zrobiona na jedno kopyto. Mocny jest w szczególności początek i końcówka albumu (pod postacią kawałków "Perverse Suffering", "Disfigured", "Monolith" oraz "Mummified In Barbed Wire"), gdzie zespół przytłacza ciężarem i potrafi sensownie trzymać się podobnych temp bez popadania w nudę. W tym miejscu należałoby pochwalić zwłaszcza Jacka Owena i Roba Baretta za całkiem pomysłowe i chwytliwe patenty. Ich zagrywki może nie są tu tak zróżnicowane co na "The Bleeding", aczkolwiek mają wyraźny wpływ, by muzyka nie popadała w zwyczajną siekę. Niezły jest też rzecz jasna środek albumu (pojawił się nawet pozbawiony wokali "Relentless Beating" - a to już jak na nich poważna nowość!), z tym, że tutaj ciśnienie już nieco siada, bywa jednorodnie i nie przykuwa to uwagi w takim stopniu co wyżej wymienione kawałki. Słowo jeszcze o George'u. Z powierzonego zadania spisał się generalnie fajnie, pokazując się z wyraźnie innej strony od swojego poprzednika, choć o oczko niżej względem dołów Chrisa. Czyli całościowo, bez olbrzymich strat względem wcześniejszych materiałów.

"Vile" to więc dla Cannibal Corpse otwarcie nowego (i udanego) rozdziału. Za sprawą tego wydawnictwa Amerykanie bowiem dokonali wymiany frontmana, a przy tym zdołali stworzyć muzykę na wysokim poziomie i w charakterystycznym dla siebie stylu. Ryzyko się opłaciło, ponieważ Corpsegrinder wpasował się w Cannibal Corpse bez większych zarzutów.

Co ciekawe, część materiału z "Vile" została nagrana jeszcze z Chrisem Barnesem i ukazała się w 1995 roku pod postacią bootlegu zatytułowanego "Created To Kill". Oczywiście, jakość tych nagrań pozostawia wiele do życzenia, aczkolwiek dzięki tej ciekawostce można w jakimś tam stopniu sobie porównać jak wypadałby ten krążek, gdyby Barnes nie wyleciał z zespołu. Do sprawdzenia dla najbardziej ciekawskich.

Changes, changes, changes...these words are a little weird in the context of Cannibal Corpse, but that's the facts, because something really happened with these Americans between "The Bleeding" and "Vile". This "something really happened" applies primarily to the dismissal of Chris Barnes and the coming of the Monstrosity frontman, George Fisher. The loss was certainly significant (in both bands, in fact), although as the other four musicians claimed, Chris did not care about their opinion more and more and - most of all - he did not feel death metal the same as before (what shows, first [but not only] albums from Six Feet Under), so such a decision seems to be the most logical. Anyway, as it quickly turned out, the line-up changes that took place over the past two years were quickly accepted and did not lower the group's popularity. 

On the "Vile", the band significantly rejected the bizarre stuff of "The Bleeding" (which wasn't a bad thing though), and instead decided to go into simple, rhythmic death metal. The effects turned out good, because the music lost nothing of its brutality and was generally not done on the rush. The beginning and the end of the album are particularly strong (in the form of the tracks like "Perverse Suffering", "Disfigured", "Monolith" and "Mummified In Barbed Wire"), where the band overwhelmed by heaviness and can reasonably stick to similar tempos without falling into boredom. At this point, one should praise Jack Owen and Rob Barett for their quite ingenious and catchy patents. Their ideas may not be as varied as on "The Bleeding", although they have a clear influence that the music does not fall into a boring blasting. The middle of the album is also quite good (even "Relentless Beating", devoid of vocals, appeared - and that's a serious novelty for them!), but the pressure here is a bit lower, sometimes it's homogeneous and it does not attract attention to the same extent as the above-mentioned songs. A word more about George. Generally, he did a great job with the task entrusted to him, showing himself from a distinctly different side from his predecessor, although not much low as Chris. So as a whole, without huge losses compared to previous materials. 

So "Vile" is the opening of a new (and successful) chapter for Cannibal Corpse. By this release, the Americans hired a new frontman, and at the same time, they managed to create music at a high level and in their characteristic style. The risk paid off because Corpsegrinder fitted into Cannibal Corpse generally without major complaints.

Interestingly, some of the material from "Vile" was recorded with Chris Barnes and was released in 1995 as a bootleg entitled "Created To Kill". Of course, the quality of these recordings is not good, but by this curiosity you can compare to some extent how the album would have looked if Barnes had not been fired from the band. Those most interested should check it.
