Obscura - "Illegimitation" (2012)

Wspominałem, że najwcześniejsze lata niemieckiej Obscury (czyli okres 2002-2008) nie należały do brawurowo atrakcyjnych. W zasadzie tak, ale...jeśli zestawi się to z największymi nazwami, na których Obscura tak obficie się inspirowała! Co innego kompilacja "Illegimitation", tutaj zdecydowanie jest o czym wspominać i w chronologiczny sposób można sobie prześledzić losy kapeli Steffena Kummerera od jej powstania aż do 2012 roku. Nie zabrakło również pewnych niespodzianek, ale o nich w dalszej części recki.

Na start leci demo z 2003 roku o takim samym tytule co kompilacja, tj. "Illegimitation". Dość ciekawe jest ono o tyle, że na tym etapie obok Steffena Kummerera, Jonasa Baumgartla i Armina Seitza skład Obscury zasilał inny wokalista (i wtedy basista) Martin Ketzer, a sam styl bliższy był...uprogowanego i poddeathionego Dissection. Znaczy to tyle, że w muzyce Obscury znalazło się zaskakująco sporo melo-blackowych pomysłów i tejże melodyki w przeciwieństwie do technicznych wygibasów czy cynikowych odjazdów, których tutaj prawie brak (co ciekawe, w podobnym czasie Steffen założył osobny zespół poświęcony blackowej stylistyce - Thulcandra). Słucha się tego nieźle, choć czuć też, że na tamtym etapie Niemcom brakowało wyraźnie większej myśli przewodniej, by przełożyć te wpływy na swoje (bardziej niż w przypadku "Retribution", mimo że celowali w inne patenty). Największy rarytas znalazł się za to w środku kompilacji, czyli na ścieżkach 5-7. No i o ile sam w sobie "Incarnated" nie odstaje zbytnio od swojej finalnej wersji z "Cosmogenesis" (chociaż melodycznie zdaje się być nieco mocniej melancholijnym), tak "Open The Gates" oraz "Headworm" to utwory, które celują w zdecydowanie bardziej klasyczne, deathowe środki, bliższe - no któż by przypuszczał! - Morbid Angel. Ciekawostka to też o tyle fajna, że we wszystkich z tych trzech utworów udzielał się jeszcze skład z debiutu (co w szczególności słychać po nieco pozmienianych partiach basu - o dziwo nadal całkiem finezyjnych). Na koniec z kolei trafiły covery Death, Atheist oraz Cynic nagrane z Hannesem Grossmanem, Christianem Münznerem oraz Linusem Klausenitzerem, sensownie utrzymane na poziomie swoich oryginałów i dobrze pokazujących, z czego ekipa Kummerera - w większości - czerpała (choć zabrakło w tym zestawieniu jeszcze Necrophagist).

Tego typu kompilacja to zatem znakomita gratka dla największych kolekcjonerów dorobku kapeli Steffena Kummerera. Na "Illegimitation" znalazły się bowiem wszystkie pomniejsze nagrania Obscury, z których dostępnością wcześniej było różnie, a do tego jeszcze kilka ciekawostek, które fajnie uatrakcyjniają całość i nadają owemu wydawnictwu wyjątkowości.

I mentioned that the earliest years of the German Obscura (i.e. the period 2002-2008) were not daringly attractive. In fact, yes, but...if you combine it with the biggest names Obscura was inspired by so profusely! The "Illegimitation" compilation is different, here is definitely something to mention and you can trace the history of Steffen Kummerer's band from its beginning until 2012 in a chronological way. There were also some surprises, but more about them later in the review. 

The start is a demo from 2003 with the same title as the compilation, i.e. "Illegimitation". It's quite interesting because at this stage, along with Steffen Kummerer, Jonas Baumgart and Armin Seitz, the line-up of Obscura was supported by another vocalist (and then bassist) Martin Ketzer, and the style itself was closer to...something like proggy/deathy Dissection. It means that the music contains surprisingly many melo-black ideas and melodics, as opposed to technical gibs or Cynic-like progressions, which are almost absent here (interestingly, at a similar time Steffen founded a separate band devoted to black metal style - Thulcandra). It's listen to it well, although you also feel that at that stage the Germans lacked a distinctly greater theme to take these influences into their own ideas (more so than in the case of "Retribution", even though they focused at other patents). The greatest rarity was in the middle of the compilation, i.e. on tracks 5-7. And while "Incarnated" itself does not stand out too much from its final version from "Cosmogenesis" (although it seems to be a bit more melancholic melodically), "Open The Gates" and "Headworm" are songs that focus at definitely more classic, death metal patterns, closer to the - who would have guessed! - Morbid Angel. This is a nice curiosity because in all of these three tracks the line-up from the debut was also present (which is especially audible after slightly different bass parts - surprisingly still quite sophisticated). Finally, the covers of Death, Atheist and Cynic recorded with Hannes Grossman, Christian Münzner and Linus Klausenitzer, sensibly maintained on the level of their originals and showing well what the Kummerer's band - for the most part - inspired from (although Necrophagist was not included in this list). 

This type of compilation is therefore a great treat for the greatest collectors of the discography of Steffen Kummerer's band. On "Illegimitation" you can find all the smaller Obscura recordings, the availability of which was worse before, and a few more curiosities that make the whole thing more attractive and make this release unique.
