Obscura - "Diluvium" (2018)

Po znacznie mniej entuzjastycznym odbiorze "Akróasis" względem poprzednich płyt, pod jakimi się ekipa Steffena Kummerera podpisała, następny - już piąty - album Obscury ukazał się o dziwo całkiem szybko, bo ledwie 2 lata później. Z bardziej istotnych zmian należy tu wspomnieć, że na etapie powstawania "Diluvium" nastąpiła wymiana na stanowisku gitarzysty, gdzie Toma Geldschlägera zastąpił młodszy stażem Rafael Trujillo oraz...w zasadzie tyle. Bo poza tym, wszystko co muzyczne pozostało na swoim miejscu i - jak się zaraz okaże - wcale nie tak odległe od rejonów z "Akróasis". Co więcej, podczas odsłuchu "Diluvium" mam podobne odczucia co przy "Omnivium", że...w sumie to owy album powstał na autopilocie!

"Diluvium" bowiem sprawia wrażenie debestofa pod postacią nowych (?) kawałków. Fakt, piąty krążek grupy Steffena Kummerera nie jest tak obfity w melodie co "Akróasis", aczkolwiek w jeszcze większym stopniu emanuje on techniką i progresją kosztem naturalności i ciężaru, a żeby było śmieszniej, jako album niewiele wnosi do dyskografii zespołu. Nie znaczy to z automatu, że całości słucha się źle czy bez zaciekawienia (bo wręcz przeciwnie), ale gdzieniegdzie ma się wrażenie, że kwartet za bardzo chciał tu zagrać pod tych, dla których największym wyznacznikiem zajebistości jest zasypywanie słuchacza jak największą ilością przebierania paluchami po gryfie. Tego typu mankamenty wprawdzie nasuwają się raptem w przedobrzonych "Ethereal Skies", "Ekpyrosis" oraz "An Epilogue To Infinity", z tym, że pozostałe z utworów również nie zachwycają aż tak mocno co kawałki z albumów nr 2 i 3. Wniosek z tego prosty. "Diluvium" brakuje przede wszystkim świeższego spojrzenia na prog-deathową stylistykę. W końcu wiele podobnych tematów, jakich na omawianym krążku niemało, można już było usłyszeć na poprzednich nagraniach; często też w jeszcze ciekawszych aranżacjach.

Z tego względu, "Diluvium" najlepiej trafi do tych, którzy lubują się w tego typu technicznej stylistyce bezgranicznie. Na swoim piątym albumie ekipa Kummerera postanowiła bowiem jedynie zebrać do kupy swoje najbardziej cenione patenty i na ich bazie stworzyć nowe kompozycje bez wychodzenia ponad program. Udało im się przy takim bezpiecznym podejściu utrzymać wysoki poziom, aczkolwiek nie udało im się wyskoczyć z czymś bardziej wyjątkowym niż typowa, nowsza Obscura.

After much less enthusiastic reception of "Akróasis" compared to the previous albums that Steffen Kummerer's band signed for, the next - already fifth - Obscura album was released surprisingly quite quickly, only 2 years later. Among the more important changes, it should be mentioned that at the stage of creating "Diluvium" there was a replacement as a guitarist, where Tom Geldschläger was replaced by Rafael Trujillo and...basically that's all. Because apart from that, everything musical remained in its place and - as it will turn out in a moment - not so distant from the regions of "Akróasis". What's more, while listening to "Diluvium" I have similar feelings as with "Omnivium" that...in fact, this album was made on autopilot!

"Diluvium" seems to be a best of in the form of new (?) songs. Well, the fifth album by Steffen Kummerer's group has not as many melodies as "Akróasis", although it emanates even more with technique and progression at the expense of naturalness and heaviness, and to be funnier, as an album it does not contribute much to the band's discography. This does not automatically mean that the whole disc is listened to badly or without interest (because on the contrary), but in many places you have the impression that the quartet wanted to play too much here for those for whom the greatest determinant of awesomeness is to show the listener with as many technique as possible. This type of disadvantages, however, only appear in the overdone "Ethereal Skies", "Ekpyrosis" and "An Epilogue To Infinity", but the other tracks also do not impress as much as the tracks from albums no. 2 and 3. Conclusion from this straight. Above all, "Diluvium" lacks a fresh look at the prog-death style. After all, many similar topics, as on the discussed album, could already be heard on previous recordings; often in even more interesting arrangements.

For this reason, "Diluvium" is best for those who like this type of technical style. On their fifth album, the Kummerer's band decided only to collect their most valued patents and on their basis create new compositions without going beyond the program. They managed to maintain a high level with this safe approach, although they did not manage to come out with something more unique than the typical, newer Obscura.
