Cryptopsy - "And Then You'll Beg" (2000)
Idąc za ciosem, w 2 lata po premierze "Whisper Supremacy", Kanadyjczycy z Cryptopsy postanowili ciągnąć dalej ten swój wózek z Mike'iem DiSalvo w roli frontmana wypuszczając krążek nr 4, czyli "And Then You'll Beg". Tempo to zawrotne, zwłaszcza jak na stopień zawiłości muzyki tej piątki, aleee pamiętając jak bardzo na ich trzecim longplayu zmarnowano potencjał na wybitny materiał, trudno było łudzić się, że "And..." jakkolwiek zmieni tę sytuację. No i cóż, wobec "And Then You'll Beg" rozchodzi się dokładnie o to samo co wcześniej - zajebistą muzykę, kiepskie wokale.
Krzywdzącym byłoby określenie zawartości czwartego krążka Cryptopsy jako kalki z poprzednika, bo to jednak nieco inna partia kaloszy (o czym zaraz), aczkolwiek znów rozczarowuje, że do tak zaawansowanej ekstremy dobrano wokale ze skrajnie innej parafii (ponownie, jakby z hardcore'a/metalcore'a). Szkoda, bo instrumentalnie "And Then You'll Beg" jest materiałem jeszcze bardziej zawiłym, brutalniejszym i szalonym na tle poprzednich krążków (co już samo w sobie zdawało się być zadaniem iście karkołomnym). Wystarczy rzucić tytułami pokroju "Voice Of Unreason", "Screams Go Unheard" (najbardziej egzotyczny w zestawieniu, ze względu na wykorzystanie didgeridoo), "Shroud", "Back To The Worms" (nowa wersja utworu z "Ungentle Exhumation") czy "We Bleed". Aż roi się w nich od technicznych niuansów (również pod względem basu!), brutalnej wyziewności i komplikowania gdzie się da (tutaj jak zwykle zasługa Jona Levasseura i Flo Mouniera). Problem jednak w tym, że album zawiera jeszcze Mike'a DiSalvo; wokalistę, który swoją manierą totalnie spłaszcza muzykę. Przez to, można odnieść mylne wrażenie, że dzieje się tu...stanowczo za mało jak na zespół formatu Cryptopsy! Na "And..." dzieje się dużo, ba!, bardzo dużo, ale do takiej rzeźni zdecydowanie potrzebny jest konkretny growling, nie zaś pokrzykiwanie na core'ową modłę.
Drugie (i póki co ostatnie) uderzenie Cryptopsy z Mike'iem DiSalvo to album z cyklu tych do odpalenia gdzieś w znacznie dalszej kolejności przy poznawaniu ich ogólnej dyskografii. "And Then You'll Beg", choć ma swoje momenty i potrafi zainteresować, powtarza wady, o których wspominałem przy okazji "Whisper Supremacy". Znów więc jest to album, gdzie znakomitej muzyce towarzyszą słabe wokale.

Following the two years after the premiere of "Whisper Supremacy", Canadians from Cryptopsy decided to continue with Mike DiSalvo in the role of frontman, releasing album no. 4, "And Then You'll Beg". The pace is dizzying, especially considering the complexity of their music, but remembering how much potential was wasted on their third lp due to terrible vocals, it was hard to delude that "And..." would change this situation anyway. Well, "And Then You'll Beg" is exactly the same as before - awesome music, bad vocals.
It would be detrimental to define the content of the fourth Cryptopsy album as a boring copy from its predecessor, because this is a slightly different cd (more about it, in a moment), although it's disappointing again that for such an advanced extreme, vocals from an extremely different regions were selected (again, as if from hardcore/metalcore). It's a pity, because instrumentally "And Then You'll Beg" is even more complicated, brutal and crazy material compared to the previous albums (which seemed to be really hard in itself). Just songs like "Voice Of Unreason", "Screams Go Unheard" (the most exotic in the list, due to the use of didgeridoo), "Shroud", "Back To The Worms" (new version of the song from "Ungentle Exhumation") or "We Bleed". They are full of technical nuances (also in terms of bass!), brutal exhilaration and complexity wherever possible (here, as usual, by compositional talent by Jon Levasseur and Flo Mounier). However, the problem, is that the album also includes Mike DiSalvo; a vocalist who totally flattens the music with his manner. As a result, you get the wrong impression that...too little is happening here for a band like Cryptopsy! Well, there is a lot going on on "And...", really a lot!, but for such a brutal/technical death metal you definitely need a specific growling, not shouting at the core manner.
The second (and so far last) hit of Cryptopsy with Mike DiSalvo is an album from the series of those to be listened somewhere much further in getting to know their general discography. "And Then You'll Beg", although it has its moments and can interest, repeats the disadvantages that I mentioned on the occasion of "Whisper Supremacy". So again it's an album where great music is accompanied by weak vocals.
