Cryptopsy - "Whisper Supremacy" (1998)
Istnieje pewna nisza, która to właśnie etap z Mike'iem DiSalvo za mikrofonem uznaje jako ten najbardziej true w wykonaniu Cryptopsy. Ja powiem za to, cytując klasyka, no tak średnio bym powiedział, tak średnio. "Blasphemy Made Flesh" i "None So Vile" absolutnie niczego nie brakowało, obie te płyty prezentowały zajebiście wysoki poziom, pod każdym względem były spójne i najlepiej ukazywały sedno stylu tych Kanadyjczyków. Wraz z odejściem charakterystycznego Lorda Worma, osierocona przez Flo Mouniera, Jona Levasseura, Érica Langloisa i - świeżutkich w składzie - Miguela Roya oraz Mike'a DiSalvo kapela obrała sobie dość wydziwaczony kierunek, głównie wprowadzając nieprzystające elementy do swojego stylu. Pierwszym tego przykładem właśnie "Whisper Supremacy".
Cały ten krzyk roznosi się tu wobec wymiany na stanowisku wokalisty (jak jednak pokaże przyszłość - to ledwie przedsmak tego co będzie potem). No cóż, Mike DiSalvo nie ma kompletnie nic wspólnego ze szczekliwością Lorda Worma czy generalnie death metalem (!) - bliżej mu natomiast do core'owych krzykaczy. Co jednak najciekawsze (czy najdziwniejsze), pozostałe instrumentarium nie zmieniło się jakkolwiek względem "Blasphemy..." i "None...". Nadal jest ono kurewsko brutalne, zakręcone, niedające słuchaczowi wytchnienia, przy jednoczesnej sporej dawce wyszukanych melodii. Dominuje zmyślnie skomponowana rzeźnia, która poraża olbrzymią finezją i czytelnością tak wszechstronnej ilości użytych środków, tyle że brakuje jej porządnych i wykonanych bez żenady wokaliz. Kawałki pokroju "Loathe", "Cold Hate, Warm Blood", "Faceless Unknown" czy "Flame To The Surface" z normalnym growlem niszczyłyby w całej swojej rozciągłości, a tak, z wokalami DiSalvo (czasem w typie...ugabuga), bardziej męczą niż fascynują. Na "Whisper..." po prostu odnosi się wrażenie, że zderzyły się ze sobą dwa zupełnie nieprzystające do siebie oblicza metalowej muzyki.
"Whisper Supremacy" to zatem jeden z cięższych do oceny krążków, jakie ukazały się pod szyldem Cryptopsy. Z jednej strony, kompozycyjnie całość została utrzymana w rejonach z poprzednich dwóch albumów, z drugiej zaś, drastycznie inne, o core'owej manierze wokale spowodowały, że materiał traci na mocy i irytuje wstrzelonymi od czapy histerycznymi wokalami. W przypadku Cryptopsy dużo lepiej, gdy przeważa deathowy ryk.

There is a niche, which considers the most true period with Mike DiSalvo as a frontman in the all Cryptopsy's line-up. But I will say, well, absolutely not really. "Blasphemy Made Flesh" and "None So Vile" presented an amazing high level, they were consistent in every way and they showed the essence of the Canadian style best. With the departure of the characteristic Lord Worm, Flo Mounier, Jon Levasseur, Éric Langlois and - the newest in the line-up - Miguel Roy and Mike DiSalvo took a rather bizarre direction, mainly introducing incongruous elements to their style. The first example of this is "Whisper Supremacy".
All this disarray spreads here of the exchange as a vocalist (however, as the future shows - it's only a foretaste of what will happen next). Well, Mike DiSalvo has absolutely nothing to do with Lord Worm's barking or death metal in general (!) - he's closer to core screamers. However, what is the most interesting (or the weirdest), the remaining instruments have not changed anyway in relation to "Blasphemy..." and "None...". A cleverly composed brutality dominates here with enormous finesse and legibility of such a versatile amount of means used, but whole cd lacks decent and shameless vocalizations. Songs like "Loathe", "Cold Hate, Warm Blood", "Faceless Unknown" or "Flame To The Surface" would destroy with a normal growls in their entire extent, but with DiSalvo's vocals (sometimes in the really strange type), they tire more than fascinate. On "Whisper..." you just get the impression that two completely incongruous faces of metal music have collided with each other.
"Whisper Supremacy" is therefore one of the hardest to rate albums that have been released under the Cryptopsy name. On the one hand, the composition of the whole was kept in the regions from the previous two albums, on the other, the drastically different vocals with the core manner made the material lose its power and irritate with hysterical vocals. In the case of Cryptopsy, it's much better when the death metal growls prevail.
