Frightful - "Spectral Creator" (2021)

I niech mi ktoś powie, że w dobie czasów Spotify czy innego Bandcampa okładka nie ma znaczenia! Gdański Frightful udowadnia, że to nadal bardzo istotna część muzyki, dzięki której można wyrobić sobie pewne, przedwczesne zdanie (nie zawsze prawidłowe, ale o tym kiedy indziej) lub że w ogóle jest się w stanie zainteresować samym wydawnictwem/zespołem. Recenzujący tego żywym przykładem! Prawdopodobnie gdyby nie surrealistyczna okładka autorstwa Mariusza Lewandowskiego (w bardzo charakterystycznym dla tego artysty stylu), możliwe że "Spectral Creator" obczaiłbym dużo dużo później. A niesłusznie.

Zza tajemniczej framugi z okładki wyłania się tutaj bowiem thrash/death w typie Kreator (maksymalnie do "Extreme Aggression"), Death (tak do "Leprosy") i Sepultura (nie dalej niż za "Arise") doprawiony blackową melodyką mogącą się kojarzyć z Dissection. Można zatem znaleźć na "Spectral Creator" mocno zadziorne riffy, bębnienie z cyklu hop do przodu (z rzadka z blastami), zwariowane solówki (czasem też pojedynki obu gitarzystów), a wśród elementów przekładających się na unikalność tego materiału: odważną melodyjność, porozrzucane gdzieniegdzie bardziej techniczne zagrywki (znów, od strony gitar), wokale wprost ze studni i okazjonalny black metalowy feeling (jak np. w "Crimson Dawn" i instrumentalnym "Breaking The Twilight"). Jest to więc dosyć niecodzienne połączenie (zwłaszcza z perspektywy naszej sceny), ale wykonane z głową, dużą dawką frajdy z komponowania takich dźwięków i bez plagiatów. Da się niby do "Spectral..." przyczepić, że czasami bywa na nim zbyt jednorodnie a innym razem, że przydałoby się tu i ówdzie nieco więcej brutalności, ale tak naprawdę, to tylko drobnostki. Nie odbierają one radochy ze słuchania, a i szybko idzie się do nich przekonać.

W ten sposób, "Spectral Creator" jawi się jako jedna z ciekawszych pozycji z 2021 roku w nurcie thrash/death czy generalnie polskiego metalu. Słychać, że zawarta na nim muzyka została wykonana z pasją i na tyle rozsądnie, by nie dało się jej uznać za nudną wypadkową kilku większych nazw. W końcu, nikt tu Ameryki nie odkrywa, a jednak słucha się tego z zainteresowaniem.

And let someone tell me that in the era of Spotify or other Bandcamp, the cover art does not matter! Frightful from the Gdańsk proves that it's still a very important part of the music, by which you can form a premature opinion (not always correct, but about it at a different time) or become interested in the album/band itself. The reviewer is a vivid example! Probably, if it weren't for the surreal cover by Mariusz Lewandowski (in a style very characteristic for this artist), it's possible that I would check out "Spectral Creator" much later. And wrongly.

Behind the mysterious frame from the cover art there appears thrash/death in the type of Kreator (up to "Extreme Aggression"), Death (somewhere to "Leprosy") and Sepultura (not further than "Arise") seasoned with black metal melodiousness that can be associated with Dissection. So, there are highly aggressive riffs, speed drumming (rarely with blasts), crazy solos (sometimes also duels of both guitarists), and among the elements that come into the uniqueness of this material: bold melodies, sometimes more technical patterns (again, on the guitar side), vocals straight from the well and the occasional black metal feeling (like in "Crimson Dawn" and the instrumental "Breaking The Twilight"). Well, it's quite an unusual combination (especially from the perspective of polish metal), but made with good reasoning, a lot of fun in composing such sounds and without plagiarism. Okay, you can complain that occasionally "Spectral..." is too homogeneous and other times that it could use a bit more brutality here and there, but in fact, it's just a minor detail. This do not take the joy of listening and quickly go to convince it.

In this way, "Spectral Creator" appears to be one of the most interesting cds from 2021 in the genre of thrash/death or generally polish metal. You can hear that the music on this album was made with passion and reasonably enough not to be considered a boring resultant of a few larger names. After all, no one here is discovering America, but yet it's listened to with interest.
