Cruciamentum - "Obsidian Refractions" (2023)

Na tyle ten czas zapieprza, że jeszcze nie tak dawno żyłem w przekonaniu, że "Charnel Passages" to stosunkowo świeżuteńki debiut, którego premiera miała miejsce jakoś z rok czy dwa lata temu. Tymczasem, od tamtej chwili upłynęło lat osiem, a panowie z Cruciamentum dopiero w 2023 roku odfajkowali płytę nr 2 - "Obsidian Refractions". Jak łatwo było jednak przewidzieć, przez ten sporawy czas działo się u nich całkiem niemało. No a przez owe niemało ma się rozumieć koncertowanie, wydanie epki i zmiany w składzie, a także to, że kwestia pełniaka pozostawała w dalszych perspektywach i ogólnym komponowaniu bez pośpiechu, z pełną naturalnością. Czy zatem "Obsidian Refractions" sprostał oczekiwaniom i podtrzymał opinię o Cruciamentum jako jednej z ciekawszych, świeższych hord pałających się death metalem? No ja rzekłbym, że jak najbardziej.

Mimo tych ośmiu lat, po Cruciamentum nie czuć przerwy czy jakiegokolwiek (d)efektu, żeby ci goście się wypalili lub wypadli z obiegu. "Obsidian Refractions" dowodzi, że niemal po kompletnej rozsypce składu można sensownie odbudować zespół, udanie kontynuować wcześniejszy styl i generalnie utrzymywać wysoki poziom. Drugi album Cruciamentum, podobnie jak jego poprzednik, to kawał rozbudowanego, klimatycznego oraz bardzo wciągającego death metalu, świetnie osadzonego na fundamentach Morbid Angel, Incantation, Immolation czy - nawet nieco wyłamującego się z tego schematu - Demigod, a zarazem mający swój własny pierwiastek i pomysły nie będące oczywistymi nawiązaniami do ww. tuzów. Względem "Charnel...", na pewno mniej na "Obsidian..." fińskiej surowizny, za to więcej dołująco-grobowej atmosfery oraz odrealnionych klimatów w typie tego co parę lat wcześniej (pomyślnie) uskuteczniali Spectral Voice i Krypts. Ten element z kolei bardzo fajnie podkreśla co wolniejsze partie, dzięki którym tak ponure brzmienia nie zamulają zbędnie albumu i jeszcze silniej działają na wyobraźnię, tworząc przed oczyma wizje takie, jak te widoczne na okładce. 

Naturalnie, z intensywnego blastowania oraz dużej dynamiki na "Obsidian Refractions" również nie zrezygnowano. Takie kawałki jak "Abhorrence Evangelium", "Necropolis Of Obsidian Mirrors" czy "Scorn Manifestation" są jednakowo duszne i bezlitosne, co rozbudowane i bogate w niuanse, a przy tym wprost idealne do prezentacji na żywo. Najlepsze rzeczy dzieją się jednak w finale albumu, czyli wraz z pojawieniem się najdłuższego, dziesięciominutowego "Drowned". Sposób w jaki budowany jest w nim niepokojący nastrój, przeplatana z tym brutalność, ogólna melodyka riffów, ilość zapadających w pamięć motywów i do tego to chaotyczne zakręcenie w środku utworu - po prostu trudno wyobrazić sobie w tej sytuacji lepsze zwieńczenie krążka.

Z tego entuzjazmu wyłania się więc album kompletny. No niestety, nie do końca, bo "Obsidian Refractions" ma jeden istotny problem, o którym wcześniej nie wspominałem - wokale. Otóż, ich wrzeszczany charakter trochę spłaszcza tak ciekawe spojrzenie na death metal i - generalnie - wypadają one znacznie słabiej od siłowych growli D.L.'a. W ostatecznym rozrachunku, nie zmienia to jakoś znacząco mojej oceny wobec "Obsidian...", bo ta i tak jest wysoka, aczkolwiek z innymi, domyślnie bardziej deathowymi wokalami faktycznie można byłoby tutaj piać z zachwytów. Być może wtedy drugi longplay Cruciamentum definitywnie zdeklasowałby konkurencję.

Time is so crazy that not so long ago I was convinced that "Charnel Passages" was a relatively new debut, the premiere of which took place a year or two ago. Meanwhile, eight years have passed since then and the gentlemen from Cruciamentum released album no. 2 in 2023 - "Obsidian Refractions". However, as it was easy to predict, quite a lot happened to them during this considerable period of time. Well, by this quite a lot is meant touring, releasing an ep and changes in the line-up, as well as the fact that the issue of full-length album remained in further perspectives and general composing without haste, with full naturalness. So did "Obsidian Refractions" meet the expectations and maintain the opinion of Cruciamentum as one of the more interesting, fresher death metal bands? Well, I would say yes, absolutely.

Despite these eight years, after Cruciamentum there is no break or any (d)effect that these guys would fall out of circulation. "Obsidian Refractions" proves that after almost a complete breakdown of the line-up, you can sensibly rebuild the line-up, successfully continue the previous style and generally maintain a high level. The second album of Cruciamentum, like its predecessor, is a piece of extensive, atmospheric and very addictive death metal, perfectly set on the standards of Morbid Angel, Incantation, Immolation and - even slightly breaking from this pattern - Demigod and at the same time having its own element and ideas not being obvious references to the above-mentioned here. Compared to "Charnel...", there are certainly less Finnish rawness than "Obsidian...", but more of a gloomy and unreal atmosphere of the type that Spectral Voice and Krypts (successfully) created a few years earlier. This element, in turn, very nicely highlights the slower parts, by which such gloomy sounds stimulate the imagination even more, creating visions such as those visible on the cover art.

Naturally, the intense blasting and high dynamics on "Obsidian Refractions" were not abandoned either. Songs such as "Abhorrence Evangelium", "Necropolis Of Obsidian Mirrors" and "Scorn Manifestation" are as stifling and merciless as they are complex and abundant in nuances, and at the same time perfect for live presentation. However, the best things happen in the finale of the album, i.e. with the appearance of the longest, ten-minute long "Drowned". The way in which the disturbing mood is created, the brutality intertwined with it, the overall melody of the riffs, the number of memorable motifs and the chaotic twist in the middle of the song - it's simply difficult to imagine a better ending to the album in this situation.

From this enthusiasm a complete album emerges. Well, unfortunately, not entirely, because "Obsidian Refractions" has one important problem that I haven't mentioned before - the vocals. Well, their screaming character somewhat flattens such an interesting look at death metal and - in general - they are much weaker than D.L.'s forceful growls. Ultimately, this does not significantly change my rating for "Obsidian...", because it's still high, although with different, by default more death metal vocals, it will be even better album. Perhaps then the second Cruciamentum lp would definitely outclass the competition.
