Pathologist - "Grinding Opus Of Forensic Medical Problems" (1993)

Jeżeli wyjątkowość czeskiego Pathologist na etapie "Putrefactive And Cadaverous Odes About Necroticism" mogła z deczka wydawać się naciąganą, tak raptem rok później po wydaniu następnego (i jak się później okazało, ostatniego) krążka, sytuacja nie pozostawiała już żadnych złudzeń. Czescy Patologiści na owym "Grinding Opus Of Forensic Medical Problems" stworzyli doskonałe rozwinięcie goregrindu z "Symphonies Of Sickness", pokazując gdzie Brytole mogliby zawędrować, gdyby pozostali w tamtym nurcie na dłużej i skupili się na polepszaniu aspektów brzmieniowych (ale bez wyraźnego czyszczenia) oraz stężenia, a jakże by inaczej!, patologii. Być może wtedy powstałaby im jeszcze bardziej poroniona dawka goregrindu, w taki sposób jak to właśnie uczynili Czesi na swoim drugim longplayu.

W każdym razie, "Grinding Opus Of Forensic Medical Problems" to rzadki przypadek, gdzie inspirowanie się większą nazwą pozwoliło spadkobiercom nagrać równie genialny album co ten wyjściowy i na którym z powodzeniem udało się dodać trochę akcentów od siebie. W stosunku do debiutu, pomimo ledwie roku, pozmieniało się u Pathologist naprawdę sporo. Zacznijmy po kolei. Pierwsze co się rzuca w słuch, to pójście naprzód pod kątem soundu który stał się czytelniejszy i tłustszy, ale bez zatracania - charakterystycznych dla goregrindu - dołów. Z tego względu, riffy gitarowe miażdżą i zionie z nich takim trupem, jak z tych widocznych na okładce krążka, zaś bas przebija się metalicznym soundem, a gary nie ustępują standardom narzuconym przez Kena Owena. Co jednak ciekawsze, tego instrumentarium za cholerę nie da się podciągnąć pod zrzynkę z Carcass - to po prostu naturalny rozwój patentów z "Symphonies...", tyle że bez silnych skrętów w death metal. 

Druga rzecz, nawet ważniejsza, która tak nadaje unikalności "Grinding..." to wokale. W porównaniu do jedynki, Martin Cvilink wprawdzie w głównej części skupił się na bulgotach i bekaniu w typie Demilich (choć trudno przypuszczać, by słyszeli w tamtym czasie o tych Finach), ale efekt końcowy pozostawia z otwartą koparą i brzmi mega oryginalnie. Wokale są tutaj bowiem na tyle nieludzkie (wcześniejszy charkot też), że w pierwszej chwili trudno się właściwie po takim ciosie pozbierać i coś z siebie wykrzesać - bez względu na to czy były to studyjne sztuczki czy nie. Ma się wrażenie obcowania z prawdziwą dawką muzycznej patologii. Rzućcie uchem zresztą na "Infectious Agonizing Parasitism", "Uterogestation To Abortion", "Cannibalistic Disfigurment", "Putrescence" czy "Exhumed Dead Body", a będziecie mieli pełny obraz na ile odrażające i jednocześnie wybitne jest to granie. Nawet odrobinę oderwane (?) od reszty intro zdradza, że kroi się tu coś grubo wyrastającego ponad ogólnie przyjęte normy.

"Grinding Opus Of Forensic Medical Problems" zatem zdecydowanie warto odkopać i przywrócić do regularnego odsłuchu, w szczególności jeśli jest się olbrzymim zwolennikiem brzmień w guście "Symphonies Of Sickness". Drugi longplay Pathologist to doskonała propozycja przemyślanej goregrindowej muzyki, którą zdobi wyjątkowy, odrażający klimat, świetne kompozycje oraz wbijające w samą glebę wokale. Aż szkoda, że Czesi nie pociągnęli tego dalej.

If the uniqueness of the Czech Pathologist at the "Putrefactive And Cadaverous Odes About Necroticism" time may have seemed far-fetched, just a year later after the release of the next (and, as it later turned out, the last) album, the situation has changed significantly. On "Grinding Opus Of Forensic Medical Problems" Czech Pathologists created an excellent development of the goregrind from "Symphonies Of Sickness", showing where the Brits could go if they stayed in this trend for longer and focused on improving the sound aspects (but without cleaning the production) and concentration, and of course!, of pathological atmosphere. Perhaps then they would have created an even greater dose of goregrind, just like the Czechs did on their second lp.

Well, "Grinding Opus Of Forensic Medical Problems" is a rare case where being inspired by a bigger name allowed the heirs to record an album as brilliant as the original one and where they successfully managed to add some accents of their own. A lot has changed in Pathologist since its debut, even though it was only a year after this release. Let's start one by one. The first thing that catches the ear is the progress in terms of sound, which has become clearer and fatter, but without losing the lows - characteristic of goregrind. For this reason, the guitar riffs are crushing and excruciating as much as those corpses from the cover art, while the bass is crushing with a metallic sound and the drums are up to the standards set by Ken Owen earlier. What is more interesting, however, is that this instrumentation cannot be compared to a Carcass copy - it's simply a natural development of the patterns from "Symphonies...", but without strong death metal influences.

The second thing, even more important, that makes "Grinding..." so unique are the vocals. Compared to their debut, Martin Cvilink focused mainly on Demilich-type gurgling and guttural vocals (although it's hard to assume they had heard of these Finns at the time), but the final effect is extraordinary and sounds very original. The vocals here are so inhuman (the earlier type of vocals from debut too) that at first it's difficult to remain as a normal person and not appreciate this madness - regardless of whether they were studio tricks or not. One gets the impression of dealing with a real dose of musical pathology. Take a listen to "Infectious Agonizing Parasitism", "Uterogestation To Abortion", "Cannibalistic Disfigurment", "Putrescence" or "Exhumed Dead Body" and you will have a full view of how disgusting and at the same time outstanding this music is. Even the slightly not fitting intro reveals that something far beyond generally accepted norms is going on here.

Therefore, "Grinding Opus Of Forensic Medical Problems" is definitely worth listening to and analyzing in huge amounts, especially if you are a fan of sounds like "Symphonies Of Sickness". The second longplay by Pathologist is an excellent proposal of well-thought-out goregrind music with a unique, repulsive atmosphere, great compositions and amazing, guttural vocals. So yeah, it's a pity that this is the last album from these Czechs.
