Gorephilia - "In The Eye Of Nothing" (2020)

Zdawać by się mogło, że po - jako tako - fali wznoszącej za sprawą "Severed Monolith", Finowie z Gorephilia nabiorą rozpędu i na kolejny materiał nie trzeba będzie zbyt długo czekać. I poniekąd tak, trzeci pełniak pojawił się stosunkowo szybko - już w 2020 roku. Z drugiej strony, tragedia wokół Nemesisa mogła wówczas zaważyć na dalszych losach kapeli. O dziwo, pozostała czwórka postanowiła jednak kontynuować działalność Gorephilii. Jukka Aho, poza obowiązkami gitarowymi, dorzucił sobie więc wokale, zaś w międzyczasie powstawał nowy materiał. "In The Eye Of Nothing", bo o nim mowa, wyszedł pod banderą Me Saco un Ojo/Dark Descent Records i ponownie pokazał, że w grupie tkwi niemały potencjał na coś własnego.

Najpierw, warto przyjrzeć się pod jakim kątem Finowie spróbowali liznąć tematu po swojemu.  Przede wszystkim, zespół nieco częściej wykorzystuje w riffach odwrócone power chordy lub tercje, natomiast klimat jest bardziej duszny. Z morbidowym rdzeniem tej muzyki sprawdza się to całkiem ciekawie (bo nie za często słyszy się takie rozwiązanie), dodaje jej zróżnicowania i wprowadza trupi pierwiastek w stylu Convulse czy Adramelech. Nie ma tego tak dużo jak mogłoby się wydawać, bo wpływy te przewijają się głównie w "Perpetual Procession", "Walls Of Weeping Eyes", "Not For The Weak" i połowicznie "Devotion Upon The Worm", ale cieszy, że zespół nie zamykał się w każdym momencie na jeden, konkretny styl. 

Poza tym, dominuje tu granie silnie zakorzenione w "Covenant", które zdobi organiczne, ale wierne oldschoolowi brzmienie. Znów zatem przeważa spora intensywność, na czele z charakterystycznym piłowaniem, wykręconymi solówkami, gęstym blastowaniem oraz dość wyziewowym, choć tym razem znacznie czytelniejszym growlem. Wypada to oczywiście bardzo fajnie i na wysokim poziomie, ale niekiedy odrobinę zbyt blisko swojego pierwowzoru. "Ouroboran Labyrinth" mocno zalatuje "Rapture", wspominany "Devotion Upon The Worm" pierwszym motywem z "God Of Emptiness" (na szczęście, później już rozwija się w inne rejony), a "Simplicity Of Decay" losową zbitką całego "Covenant". I nie żeby to jakoś szczególnie odrzucało, bo wiele rzeczy w klimatach Morbid Angel mnie rajcuje, aczkolwiek wydaję mi się, że w tym wypadku na "In The Eye Of Nothing" proporcje inspirowania się grupą Azagthotha nie są tak przemyślane jak na "Severed..." i niekiedy zdarza im się delikatnie przekraczać granicę dobrego smaku (przykłady wyżej). Ponownie, średnio potrzebną decyzją jest również umieszczenie przerywników - plumkających i kompletnie niepasujących do głównego repertuaru.

Zbierając te wnioski do kupy, Finowie z Gorephilii po stracie wokalisty poradzili sobie i nagrali niezły, death metalowy materiał. Może nie na tyle, by powstał im z tego wyjątkowy i odważny krążek, aczkolwiek taki, który solidnie hołduje tradycji i od czasu do czasu przemyca kilka innych, mniej oczywistych wpływów. Bez względu na to, że najczęściej słychać na "In The Eye Of Nothing" po prostu chęć bycia fińskim odpowiednikiem "Covenant".

It would seem that after the - somehow - upward wave by "Severed Monolith", the Finns from Gorephilia will gain momentum and you won't have to wait too long for the next material. And in a sense, yes, their third album appeared relatively quickly - already in 2020. On the other hand, the tragedy surrounding Nemesis could have influenced the band's further activity. Surprisingly, the rest of the band decided to continue. Jukka Aho, apart from his guitar duties, added vocals, and in the meantime new material was being created. "In The Eye Of Nothing", as it's what we are talking about, was released under the banner of Me Saco un Ojo/Dark Descent Records and once again showed that the group has considerable potential for something of its own.

First, it's worth looking from which side the Finns tried to approach the topic in their own way. First of all, the band uses inverted power chords a bit more often in the riffs, while the atmosphere is more sultry. With the Morbid Angel core of this music, it works quite interestingly (because you don't hear such a solution very often), it adds variety to it and introduces a cadaverous element in the style of Convulse or Adramelech. There's not as much of it as you might think, because these influences appear mainly in "Perpetual Procession", "Walls Of Weeping Eyes", "Not For The Weak" and partially in "Devotion Upon The Worm", I'm glad that the band didn't limit themselves to one specific style at all times.

Moreover, the dominant music here is strongly associated with "Covenant" style, which has an organic but oldschool sound. Once again, considerable intensity prevails, with characteristic distortion riffs, twisted solos, blasting and a rather effusive, although this time much more clear growl. Of course, it's very nice and at a high level, but sometimes a little too close to the original. "Ouroboran Labyrinth" strongly resembles "Rapture", the mentioned "Devotion Upon The Worm" is the first motif from "God Of Emptiness" (fortunately, it later comes into other areas), and "Simplicity Of Decay" is a random combination of the entire "Covenant". And not that I find it particularly off-putting, because I like many things in Morbid Angel's style, although it seems to me that in this case, in "In The Eye Of Nothing", the proportions of inspiration from the Azagthoth group are not as well thought out as in "Severed..." and sometimes they slightly cross the limits of good taste (examples above). Again, the placement of interludes is also an unnecessary decision - they are boring and completely incompatible with the main repertoire.

Putting these conclusions together, the Finns from Gorephilia coped after the loss of their vocalist and recorded some good death metal material. Maybe not enough to make a unique and bold album, but one that solidly respects tradition and from time to time smuggles in a few other, less obvious areas. Regardless of the fact that what you most often hear on "In The Eye Of Nothing" is simply the desire to be the Finnish equivalent of "Covenant".
