Gorephilia - "Severed Monolith" (2017)

Lubicie Morbid Angel? Jeśli tak, a czujecie spory niedosyt po ich nowszych, wymuszonych wydawnictwach, to być może Gorephilia przypadnie Wam do gustu i wypełni tę lukę. Ciekawe jest to o tyle, bo mowa tu o wymiocie prosto z Finlandii, a przecież tamtejsze ekstremalne klimaty częściej celują w gruzy i dziwactwa aniżeli (h)amerykańskie, intensywne wyziewy. Wspominałem jednak przy okazji recenzji ich debiutanckiego "Embodiment Of Death", że Gorephilia całkiem sensownie czerpie garściami z trzech pierwszych krążków Morbidów, a przy dobrych wiatrach i dalszej konsekwencji będzie mogło to mieć przełożenie na coś swojego. Na etapie ich drugiego pełniaka, zatytułowanym "Severed Monolith", trudno było mówić o tak odważnym kroku, ale tylko głuchy nie usłyszałby, że grupa zaliczyła tu dość istotny progres.

W porównaniu do debiutu, Finowie wyraźnie zagęścili tempa, zadbali o bardziej zapadające w pamięć motywy i lepiej zamaskowali wiadome inspiracje. "Severed Monolith" więc zgrabnie leci w duchu oldschoola i kompletnie niczego nieznanego przed nami nie odkrywa, aczkolwiek nie jest krążkiem ślepo zapatrzonym w swoich idoli, zawiera własne pomysły na riffy w tym nurcie i brzmi autentycznie. Z tego względu, na drugim longu Gorephilii najlepsze wrażenie wywiera rzeźnia, czyli gdy zespół zasuwa z blastami, gitarowymi szesnastkami i zdziczałymi, nieczytelnymi wokalami, a całość przyprawiana jest zwariowanymi i przewajchowanymi solówkami. Niby to nic ambitnego czy zasługującego na specjalne wyróżnienie, aczkolwiek Finowie potrafią przekuć te znane wpływy w utwory, do których szczerze chce się wracać. Chociażby melodyka riffów i nakurw prezentowany w "The Ravenous Storm", "Interplanar", "Return To Dark Space" (tutaj wyjątek - zalatuje wczesnym Immolation na kilometr) czy flagowym "Black Horns" świecą przykładem. Bardzo cieszy w nich niemała intensywność, a przy tym nie powielają one bezmyślnie albumów grupy Treya Azagthotha. Nie kumam tylko na tej płycie przerywników w typie "Heretic" (to akurat pewna nowość) oraz wydłużania tymże pomysłem "Crushed Under The Weight Of God" (kawałek spokojnie mógłby się zakończyć po pięciu minutach). Ani to spójne, ciekawe czy klimatyczne - wręcz oderwane od całokształtu longplaya. No chyba, że dla kogoś taka forma plumkania to jakiś odpoczynek od brutalności. Z tym że tego typu rozwiązania raczej nie powinny mieć miejsca na death metalowych wydawnictwach.

Konkluzja wobec zawartości "Severed Monolith" nasuwa się dość podobna co do debiutu, choć trzeba zamaszyście zaznaczyć, że drugi pełniak Gorephilii wypada lepiej od "Embodiment Of Death". To po prostu bardzo dobrze skomponowany i wyprodukowany death metal w typie pierwszych trzech krążków Morbid Angel; bez nowinek, ale wykonany z głową i wiernością ekstremie. Aha, w przypadku "Severed..." jest jeszcze ten istotny plus, że ma on więcej zapadających w pamięć riffów/motywów, dzięki czemu chce się do niego wracać. O poprzedniku takie wnioski nieszczególnie się nasuwały.

Do you like Morbid Angel? If so, and you feel quite dissatisfied after their newer, strained releases, perhaps Gorephilia will appeal to you and fill this gap. This is interesting because we are talking about death metal band straight from Finland, and yet the extreme climates there more often focus on ugly or strange death metal than American, intense extreme music. However, I mentioned during the review of their debut "Embodiment Of Death" that Gorephilia inspired quite sensibly from the first three Morbid Angel albums, and with further consistency, it could come into something of its own. At the times of their second full-length, entitled "Severed Monolith", it was difficult to talk about such a bold step, but only a deaf person would not hear that the group has made quite significant progress here.

Compared to the debut, the Finns clearly thickened the tempo, made sure that the motifs were more memorable and better masked the obvious inspirations. So "Severed Monolith" is neatly in the spirit of old school and does not reveal anything unknown to us, although it's not an album blindly focused on its idols, it contains its own ideas for riffs in this trend and sounds authentic. For this reason, on Gorephilia's second album, the best impression is made by intensity, when the band comes with blast beats, fast guitars and wild, unintelligible vocals, and the whole album is spiced up with crazy and full of whammy bar solos. It's nothing ambitious or worthy of special mention, but the Finns are able to turn these well-known influences into songs that you honestly want to come back to. For example, the melodies of riffs and brutality presented in "The Ravenous Storm", "Interplanar", "Return To Dark Space" (here is an exception - it smells of early Immolation a mile away) and the flagship "Black Horns" are best examples here. What is very pleasing is their considerable intensity, and at the same time they do not mindlessly duplicate the albums of Trey Azagthoth's group. The only thing I don't understand on this album are interludes like "Heretic" and the extension of "Crushed Under The Weight Of God" with this idea (the song could easily end after five minutes). It's not coherent, interesting or atmospheric - it's even detached from the overall lp. Well, unless for some people this form of ambients is a break from brutality. However, this type of solutions should not be present on death metal releases.

The conclusion regarding the content of "Severed Monolith" is quite similar to the debut, although it must be clearly noted that the second full-length of Gorephilia is better than "Embodiment Of Death". It's simply very well composed and produced death metal in the style of the first three Morbid Angel albums; no innovations, but made thoughtfully and faithfully to the extreme. Oh, in the case of "Severed..." there is another important advantage that it has more memorable riffs/motifs, which makes you want to come back to it. There were no such conclusions about its predecessor.
