Ancient Death - "Ego Dissolution" (2025)

Dowód na to jak bardzo topki roku mogą być subiektywne i rozbieżne. O amerykańskim Ancient Death zdążyłem nasłuchać się samych superlatywów, a tymczasem mną kapela ta niezbyt zawładnęła na dłużej. I nie sposób tu komukolwiek z tej ekipy odmówić obeznania w temacie i wysokiego warsztatu (wszak jeden z gitarniaków dostał posadę w Atheist) oraz ogólnie intrygującej wizji na death metal o progresywnym zacięciu; sęk w tym, że nie zawsze przekłada się to u nich na coś jednakowo spójnego i porywającego. Nie uprzedzajmy jednak faktów. Ancient Death startuje w 2021 roku, a już cztery lata później wydaje swój debiutancki album, "Ego Dissolution", wywołując zamieszanie na większą skalę i w pewnych kręgach nawet wskakując do kategorii debiutu roku.

Szum bezpodstawny do końca nie jest, bo szybko idzie odkryć, że w Ancient Death drzemie spory potencjał. Chłopaki (i dziewczyna) napierają na "Ego Dissolution" death metal silnie naznaczony kombinowaniem bliskim roku 1993, a także jego odświeżonym wydaniem dekadę i dwie później. Znaczy to tyle, że po jednej stronie mamy niemało dość nieoczywistych odniesień do Morbid Angel, Cynic, Timeghoul czy Atheist (sic!), a po drugiej, jeszcze więcej do tych nowszych z pod znaku The Chasm oraz Blood Incantation. Za takie wzorce od razu należy się Amerykanom pewien rispekt, bo mówimy o wymagającym i ambitnym spojrzeniu na death metal, choć... skoku do ekstraklasy w tak krótkim czasie to nie gwarantuje. Komu brakuje czasów "Starspawn" bez ambientów oraz większej częstotliwości wydawania pełniaków od The Chasm w ostatniej dekadzie (swoją drogą, trzeba się za nich w końcu zabrać), ten będzie zdecydowanie mocniej wyrozumiały i sprawniej przegryzie się przez całość zawartości krążka. Debiutancki longplay Ancient Death to bowiem porcja klasowego death metalu, nieszablonowego, z fajnym bujnięciem (znów, grupa Paula Riedla się kłania), niestroniącego od melodyjności, z kosmicznymi klimacikami, całkiem agresywnego oraz organicznie brzmiącego. Niestety, cały album przed dużo bardziej entuzjastyczną oceną kładą - w mojej opinii - wokale.

O ile jeszcze te okazjonalne, czyste w wykonaniu basistki sensownie dodają materiałowi nietuzinkowości oraz orientalnego posmaku (może warto popróbować w przyszłości więcej tego typu partii - byłoby ciekawiej), tak głównym growlom brakuje jebnięcia, a ich przesadnie krzyczany charakter kompletnie nie pasuje mi do zakręconej i klimatycznej muzyki. Na początku, w tytułowcu, niewiele na taki zgrzyt wskazuje, bo jazda z cyklu hop do przodu i progresje nie zostają spłaszczone przez wokalizy Jerry'ego Witunsky'ego doszczętnie, a kawałek wyróżnia się energią. Najbardziej tracą te wielowątkowe utwory pokroju "Echoing Chambers Within The Dismal Mind", "Breaking The Barriers Of Hope" czy "Breathe - Transcend (Into The Glowing Streams Of Forever)", w których są pomysły i imponująca technika, ale brak umiaru w wokalach z innej beczki sprawia wrażenie jak gdyby zespół na siłę chciał być agresywny, zamiast skupić się na klimatycznych motywach, gdy sytuacja tego wymaga.

I taka to płyta, dość ambitna, dająca snobistyczną frajdę z rozpracowania niektórych fragmentów, ale po głębszych namysłach, trochę jeszcze poszukująca oraz będąca przedsmakiem czegoś większego. "Ego Dissolution" to kawał zmyślnie skomponowanego death metalu, który nie boi się wycieczek w progresywne rejony i - w większości - nie przytępia mocniejszego trzonu tej muzyki, aczkolwiek do finezji i melodyki "Starspawn" mu nieco brakuje i dysponuje średniego kalibru wokalami. Jeśli Ancient Death przysiądą do tych aspektów przy okazji następnego wydawnictwa, to być może wtedy będziemy mogli mówić o faktycznej sensacji.

Proof of how subjective and divergent tops can be. I've heard nothing but praise for the American band Ancient Death, but earlier the band didn't exactly captivate me for long. And it's impossible to deny the band's expertise and high skill (after all, one of the guitarists landed in Atheist line-up), and overall intriguing vision for death metal with a progressive climate; the problem is, this doesn't always come into something equally coherent and captivating. But let's not get ahead. Ancient Death started in 2021, and just four years later, they release their debut album, "Ego Dissolution", causing a stir on a larger scale and even earning a spot in the debut of the year category in some groups.

The hype isn't entirely unfounded, as it quickly becomes apparent that Ancient Death has considerable potential. With "Ego Dissolution", the guys (and girl) push their way into death metal, strongly influenced by the intricacies of 1993, as well as its remastered release a decade or two later. This means that on the one hand, we have a fair few rather unobvious references to Morbid Angel, Cynic, Timeghoul, and Atheist (sic!), and on the other, even more to more recent acts like The Chasm and Blood Incantation. For such inspirations, the Americans deserve some respect right away, as we're talking about a demanding and ambitious approach to death metal, though... that doesn't guarantee a jump to the top league in such a short time. Anyone missing the days of "Starspawn" without the ambient elements and the greater frequency of full-length releases from The Chasm in the last decade (by the way, I need to review it) will definitely be more forgiving and will be able to digest the entire album more easily. Ancient Death's debut album is a serving of top-notch death metal: unconventional, with a nice rhythms (again, Paul Riedel's band is mentioned), with a lot of bold melodicism and cosmic atmospheres, quite aggressive and organic sounding. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the whole album is worse because of the vocals.

While the occasional clean vocals performed by the bassist sensibly add a touch of originality and an oriental flavor to the material (perhaps it's worth trying more of this type of parts in the future releases - it would be more interesting), the main growls lack power, and their overly screamed nature is completely out of character for this type of twisted and atmospheric music. At the beginning, on the title track, there's little to suggest such a clash, as the aggressive patterns and progressions aren't completely flattened by Jerry Witunsky's vocals, and the track stands out for its energy. The biggest disappointments are multi-threaded tracks like "Echoing Chambers Within The Dismal Mind", "Breaking The Barriers Of Hope" and "Breathe - Transcend (Into The Glowing Streams Of Forever)", which contain ideas and impressive technique, but the lack of restraint in the off-key vocals gives the impression that the band is trying to be aggressive instead of focusing on atmospheric motifs when the situation calls for it.

And that's the kind of album it is - quite ambitious, offering a snobbish joy in figuring out some of the songs, but upon further reflection, still a bit of exploration and a foretaste of something greater. "Ego Dissolution" is a piece of cleverly composed death metal that isn't afraid to venture into progressive territory and - for the most part - doesn't dull the stronger core of the music. Although it lacks the finesse and melodicism of "Starspawn" somewhat, and boasts mediocre vocals. If Ancient Death addresses these aspects on their next release, perhaps we'll be able to call it a true sensation.
