At The Gates - "Slaughter Of The Soul" (1995)

Najbardziej znana produkcja w dorobku At The Gates to rzecz wprost skierowana do miłośników gothenburgskich brzmień, według licznych opinii krążących po necie (i nie tylko) jedna z najlepszych jaką kwintet zdołał z siebie wykrzesać, niezwykle wpływowa w tym nurcie sratata sratata...Okej, będę szczery, na początku tak po drodze mi z "Slaughter Of The Soul" nie było jak to się wydawać może po ocenie jaka znalazła się na dole, ale z czasem mocno polubiłem ten krążek (choć nie na tyle co "The Red In The Sky Is Ours"). Tyle ze wspomnień z "kiedyś tam", teraz info ogólne o muzie. 

W porównaniu do "With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness" czy "Terminal Spirit Disease", muzyka na "Slaughter..." stała się odrobinę lżejsza, zyskała trochę inny feeling i znacznie lepsze brzmienie (wyłapiecie każdy szczegół) oraz wydaje się być bardziej spójną. Dużo więcej tu również melodii i prostszego łojenia niż na poprzednich wydawnictwach, chociaż...w żadnym wypadku nie zaburza to wysokiego poziomu muzy. Całość oferuje kawał znakomitego melo-deathu, który ani nie nudzi, ani nie przytłacza melodyjkami, jest wykonany po prostu z głową - a w takim graniu to prawdziwa rzadkość. 

Zdecydowana większość z utworów obraca się tu wokół już znanych u nich patentów, ale jednak ciekawiej rozwijają one zaczęte pomysły z poprzedników. Takie utwory jak "World Of Lies", "Legion", "Blinded By Fear", tytułowy, "Nausea" czy "Cold" od razu mogą przypasować nawet tym, którzy nie siedzą na co dzień w takim graniu; kawałki są proste, łatwo przyswajalne, w miarę szybkie (tym razem bez blastów), z pierdolnięciem i błyskawicznie zapadają w pamięć. Sporą robotę (o ile nie największą) robi tu także wspomniana wcześniej produkcja. Można przypuszczać, że z innym brzmieniem, krążek już nie kopałby tak mocno. W każdym razie, zespołowi udało się osiągnąć dosyć sterylną i dopieszczoną produkcję, i to w znacznie bardziej przekonującym wydaniu niż niektóre inne, pokroju Arch Enemy melo-deathowe zespoły w późniejszym czasie. 

Nie do końca pasują mi za to na "Slaughter..." wszelkie czystsze lub akustyczne fragmenty. Ich ilość jest na szczęście skromna i nie odbierają one muzyce pazura, aleee...nawet w takich malutkich dawkach trudno nie odnieść wrażenia, że więcej to psuje aniżeli wnosi sensownego (obczajcie sobie np. "Unto Others"). Na domiar złego mamy wprawdzie jeszcze dwie nic nie wnoszące zapchajdziury ("The Flames Of The End", "Into The Dead Sky"), choć te oczywiście można bez żalu przeklikać - obie mają tutaj dosyć marginalny wpływ na resztę płyty. Podsumowując, ogólne wrażenia z "czwórki" są naprawdę dobre, muzy zajebistej jest na niej co nie miara i nawet wszelkie nieścisłości nie wpływają na jej słabszy odbiór. W końcu rzekło się, że to jedno z najlepszych At The Gates.

The most famous production in the output of At The Gates is a thing directly aimed at fans of Gothenburg sounds, according to the opinions that can be found on the Internet (and not only), it's one of their best albums that the quintet managed to create, extremely influential in this trend, etc. etc...Okay, I'll be honest, at the beginning it was so on my way with "Slaughter Of The Soul" it was not as it seems after the evaluation that was at the bottom, but with time I liked this album a lot (though not as much as "The Red In The Sky Is Ours"). So many memories from "once there", now general info about music. 

Compared to "With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness" or "Terminal Spirit Disease", the music on "Slaughter..." has become a bit lighter, has a slightly different feeling, a much better sound (you will catch every detail) and it seems to be more consistent. There are also many more melodies and simpler music here than on previous releases, although...it does not disturb the high level of the music in any way. The whole thing offers a piece of excellent melo-death, which is neither boring nor overwhelming with melodies, it's made with common sense - and in such playing it is a real rarity. 

The vast majority of works here revolve around the patents already known to them, but they develop the ideas from their predecessors in a more interesting way. Songs such as "World Of Lies", "Legion", "Blinded By Fear", the title track, "Nausea" or "Cold" can suit even those who do not listen to this music; the songs are simple, easily digestible, fairly quick (this time without blasts), with a bang and are instantly memorable. A lot of work (if not the biggest) is also done by the aforementioned production. It can be assumed that with a different sound, the disc would not kick as hard. In any case, the band managed to achieve a fairly sterile and pampered production, and a much more convincing release than some other melo-death bands later on. 

But I don't quite like "Slaughter..." any softer or acoustic fragments. There are not too many of them and it does not take the edge off the music, but...even in such tiny doses it's difficult not to get the impression that it spoils more than makes sense (check for example "Unto Others"). To make matters worse, we still have two not bringing anything clogging ("The Flames Of The End", "Into The Dead Sky"), although these can of course be clicked through without regret - both have a marginal influence on the rest of the album. To sum up, the general impressions of the "Slaughter..." are really good, the music is awesome and even any inaccuracies do not affect its reception weaker. After all, it was said to be one of the best At The Gates.
