Warfather - "The Grey Eminence" (2016)

[English version]

Considering the not too high level of "Orchestrating The Apocalypse", I assumed that its successor - "The Gray Eminence" - would not be too different from what appeared on the debut. Meanwhile...something completely opposite happened, the band surprised with a really awesome release! Well, this time the band decided not to mix with the inspirations as before and decided to record the album one hundred percent in the spirit of the middle Morbid Angel.

The news, therefore, on "The Gray Eminence" is limited only to matters much better than the debut and the contemporary sounding production (but not too sterile) and a different approach to solos, although it must be admitted that in this case it's not so important, more changes would not be needed. This apparent reproduction in music takes absolutely nothing away from the coolness - most of the songs that hit "The Gray Eminence" can abuse and shock with a multitude of different interesting motifs better than with the "returning" Morbids.

Steve Tucker and Avgvstvs just created a piece of great music on this album, in the style of "Gateways..." and "Formulas...", and paradoxically very fresh. They convinced me with this approach straight away. In each of the tracks, the guys from Warfather stuffed almost equally classic, morbid riffs, a lot of blasts, lots of nice slowdowns, decent Tucker vocals and solos and more catchy moments - without bending and poor copying from the known band. And I say almost, because songs like "Heedless Servant", "Judgment, The Hammer", "Orders Of The Horde", "Gray Eminence" and "Fair And Final Warning" (quite a lot, isn't it?) outperform the others, something peculiar is formed in them and they surprise with a multitude of motives and skillful use of brutality. The whole of "The Gray Eminence" is so crushing that it's a pity that this album did not land under the name Angels. In this situation, it would not go aside, as it unfortunately happened under the name Warfather.
