Convulse - "Cycle Of Revenge" (2016)

Chciałoby się rzec, że wraz z ukazaniem się powrotnego "Evil Prevails" Finowie z Convulse wybrali najprostszą z możliwych opcji, tj. na swoich nowszych nagraniach zdecydowali się bardzo bezpiecznie (oraz w bardziej przyjaznej oprawie) imitować klimat z kultowego "World Without God". Nie trzeba było jednak długo czekać, by przekonać się, że owa teoria była średnio trafna, ponieważ już przy okazji "Cycle Of Revenge" - ich drugiego reunionowego krążka - kapela Ramiego Jämsy zdążyła mocno namieszać ponad to co wydawali wcześniej. Po delikatnym skurczeniu się składu (z grupą pożegnał się Kristian Kangasniemi), panowie bowiem postanowili uderzyć w brzmienia...w większości niepodobne do tych z poprzednich albumów!

Najogólniej, Finów wzięło tu na prog metal o melo-deathowym i space rockowym (?) posmaku. Jedyne co pozostało w większości niezmiennym to growl Ramiego, wciąż niski i mało czytelny. A mówię w większości, bo okazjonalnie zdarzają się na "Cycle..." czystsze partie i nawet coś na wzór szeptanego śpiewania. Samo instrumentarium z kolei zeszło w rejony bliższe czegoś na kształt miksu pomiędzy Opeth i Amorphis (z naprawdę różnych okresów), nie mając przy tym nic wspólnego z death metalowymi rytmami czy nieco doomową obskurnością. Główną składową czwartego albumu Convulse jest więc wysokie zróżnicowanie i eksperymentowanie z przeważnie lżejszymi stylami a jednocześnie, duży nacisk na klasycznie rockowe melodie i dość odjechany klimat.

Cały ten pomysł na odejście od stylistyki z "Evil Prevails" wyszedł na "Cycle Of Revenge" - o dziwo - bardzo sensownie; właściwie, tylko odrobinę nierówno. Sporo dobrego można powiedzieć chociażby o przestrzennych i nieco futurystycznych "Pangaea", "God Is You", "Into The Void", "Fractuted Pieces" czy jakby death'n'rollowym "Nature Of Humankind". W nich wyraźnie słychać, że nowe oblicze Convulse ma sens, może poszczycić się niebanalnymi patentami (w szczególności od strony techniki oraz wykorzystywanych efektów) i nie wypada ono miałko na tle poprzednich płyt. Sennie prezentują się tutaj raptem 3 kawałki: tytułowiec, "Ever Flowing Stream" i "War" - kształtujące się na coś ciekawszego, ale gdzieś tak do połowy, bo potem napięcie siada. Przy tak ryzykownych zmianach wynik to jednak bardzo satysfakcjonujący.

Widać więc, że "Cycle Of Revenge" to całkiem podobna historia co "Reflections" - płyta zupełnie inna dla Convulse, ale równie ciekawa co materiał wyjściowy (w tym wypadku nawet lepsza) i nie zasługująca na krytykę, z jaką się spotkała. Nie ma tu mowy o klimatach z "World Without God", aczkolwiek są za to odjechane i progresywne zabawy w obrębie metalu wykonane z głową. Mogli tylko pokusić się o lepszą okładkę do tak intrygującej muzyki.

One would like to say that by the return of "Evil Prevails", the Finns from Convulse chose the simplest possible option, i.e. on their newer recordings they decided to safely (and in a more friendly edition) imitate the atmosphere of the cult "World Without God". It didn't take long to find out, however, that this theory was not very accurate, because on the occasion of "Cycle Of Revenge" - their second reunion album - Rami Jämsä's band managed to mix things up well beyond what they had released before. After a slight changes in the line-up (Kristian Kangasniemi left the group), Convulse decided to hit the sounds...mostly unlike those from previous albums! 

Generally, the Finns took here progressive metal patterns with these melo-death and space rock (?). The only thing that remained mostly unchanged is Rami's growl, still low and not very readable. And I say mostly, because occasionally there are cleaner vocals and even something like whispered singing. The instrumentation itself, in turn, went closer to something like a mix between Opeth and Amorphis (from really different periods), having nothing to do with death metal rhythms or a doom obscurity. The main component of the fourth album by Convulse is a high diversity and experimenting with various, usually lighter styles, and at the same time, a lot of emphasis on classic rock melodies and a rather futuristic atmosphere. 

The whole idea of departing from the style of "Evil Prevails" came on "Cycle Of Revenge" - surprisingly - very sensibly; actually, just a little bit uneven. A lot of good can be said about the spatial and slightly cosmic "Pangea", "God Is You", "Into The Void", "Fractuted Pieces" or the death'n'roll-like "Nature Of Humankind". In them you can clearly hear that the new face of Convulse makes sense, it can boast remarkable patents (especially in terms of guitar technique and the effects used) and it does not look light compared to the previous albums. Only 3 tracks look sleepy here: the title track, "Ever Flowing Stream" and "War" - shaping up to something more interesting, but in the middle the tension stops. With such risky changes, the result is still very satisfying. 

So you can see that "Cycle Of Revenge" is quite a similar story to "Reflections" - an album completely different for Convulse, but as interesting as the starting material (in this case even better) and not deserving of criticism that it has encountered. There is no atmosphere like on "World Without God", but there are really interesting, progressive ideas within metal music made done with ingenuity. They could only try to get a better cover art here.
